Maybe I'll have a better opinion a second time if I watch it at home but I was disappointed with this one. Especially for having to drive 45 minutes out of the city and back to see it at a drive-in. The humour didn't land and the space scene felt like they were doing it because everyone joked about expecting it to happen at some point. If you're going to have cars in space there should be some kind of race or chase or battle.

I did like the action sequences, especially the magnet stuff, but in between it dragged. I'm feeling the loss of Brian in the franchise because I don't care about Dom all that much.

Yeah, strange that he isn't in this. Seemed like it would have been a natural fit if the story had started with him coming to Dom for help to find his boss.

There was a mobile game around the time 7 or 8 came out IIRC.

And yeah, Walker 100% brought an easy charisma to the franchise. You wanted that guy to succeed. And he would interact in funnier ways with the rest of the cast.

I've always had Fast Five as my number 1 in the franchise, and part of the greatness of F5 is that it only takes place in one location.
Especially the last 2 or 3 movies crammed way to much different locations in each film, which made the plot less coherent. (As far as you can speak of a coherent plot in a F&F movie of course)

Yeah once they started aping the Bond and M:I franchises they have wanted the travelogue aspect but it's actually kind of tough to do without audiences going "sorry, we're where now? And why...?"

Watching 2F2F when you were first introduced to the series with the later movies must be a bit weird because Roman hadn't been Flanderized yet into slapstick and the butt of everyone's jokes. He and Brian made for a good team.

I watched 2F2F for the first time last week and it holds up surprisingly well. Paul Walker turns in a MUCH better performance in that than he did in the first movie, and all of the things people ragged on it for at the time -- the cartoonish physics, the absurd gadgets, the largely non-actor cast -- turned out to be weirdly prophetic in retrospect.

Yeah I rewatched it not too long ago and that stuff didn't even faze me since I'm now used to the later films.

Although there is one moment, I think during the relay race, where it looks like Brian engages a hyperdrive :roflolmao:

F8's main hook actually sounds like a perfect thing on paper for being the first movie after Paul Walker. Like Brian isn't there and what happens without him? The team immediately implodes and has to fight against Dom. But in the execution I really feel Brian's absence because it just seems way too focused on Dom and also getting into Mary Sue territory. Like is he so much better and clever than all the rest of them combined now?

Reminds me of Doc Savage, who has a whole crew of specialists but ultimately are superfluous to Doc and are there more for flavour.

(F8 also seemed funnier as a concept for the meta reason that it was in the zeitgeist for the heroes to fight each other. Civil War and Bats vs. Supes and F8 were all out within a year of each other.)

Can't believe there hasn't yet been an explosive high-octane edge-of-your-seat post about how Jason Momoa is going to be in Fast 10! Makes sense to add him as a villain because as part of the Dom's crew I feel like he would overshadow Vin Diesel, literally and figuratively.

It is stupid and ridiculous but Brian and Roman make a good team. The first movie was Point Break but the second is more Lethal Weapon. Better in hindsight because you see why Roman becomes part of the team later on and before he becomes fully comedic relief.

6 is great. When I think about it compared to 5 I don't recall exactly what it was about 5 that rates it higher. Maybe the heist film just appeals to me more than how from 6 onward they went more Mission: Impossible with it.

I just did a holiday rewatch of the whole series and F9 is definitely the worst.

There are 2 things about the rocket car that bug me. First is that they try to set the whole thing up throughout the movie with Roman going on about their apparent invincibility, which is just way too meta of a gag for my liking in this series (and I think at the point in the film where he first brings it up it isn't even true? Han's reveal comes later). And the second thing is that the rocket car scene is technically a little bit of action that involves a car but there is no actual driving.

What really brings the movie down is the reliance on Cena as the villain, who is not a threat because we're just waiting for the inevitable teamup because Charlize Theron appears so early and has somehow become the Blofeld of the series.

Part and parcel with Cena being a non-villain is how much screentime we need for the unsatisfying Dom & Jacob backstory. He just lets Dom think he murdered their father for absolutely no gain?

Cena was terrible as a villain in 9 and was part of the reason it's my least favourite. Nothing against him personally but knowing he was never going to be actually bad the entire time really neutered the story. Mamoa was really good. Not as hilarious as they clearly wanted Dante to be but he was a good ham and that's refreshing to have opposite ever-so-serious Dom.
