Well how about that, Joe Biden starts self-destructing and the people who stand to gain start sticking in the knives. Who coulda seen that one coming?

Everyone, but in the era of Trump nothing is certain. Beyond that, while Biden isn't the only dangerously liberal contender, he is by far the worst of those who have a real shot so watching him implode is a joy for all parties.

Edit: and even though I know he is stupidly pig-headed, part of me is still stunned that he's willing to ride or die on the desegregation vs. integration bullshit in 2019.

Cat of Wealth and Taste

I mean the problem with Bernie's first question is the answer is "Yes." Single payer will raise taxes on the middle class, absolutely. It will cost the middle class much LESS overall because you won't be paying insurance premiums and the cost of procedures and drug prices will plummet, but that question was basically written to give the republicans a soundbyte they can play on loop for the next year and a half and while Bernie's answer sucked at least he was smart enough not to give them what they were asking for and no one's really gonna remember that he was kinda clumsy in how he phrased things next week.

I went to a Bernie group meet to watch the debate, it was pretty fun! Kamala shivving Biden in the kidneys was incredibly entertaining and I appreciated the guy who (rightfully) pointed out that his "Deal with Mitch" made the Bush Tax Cuts permanent and how that was absolutely a huge win for Mitch. Biden looked shocked that anyone would even remember what he was willing to sell down the river to make his deals.

Bernie was not terribly inspiring tonight, though he clearly won Foreign Policy that was probably the only topic he got the victory on. Everything else was mostly just stepping back and stump speeching while letting Biden hang himself. Which may be a winning strategy this early in the game. I guess we'll see!

That was Bennet I think who called out Biden on the McConnell deal and that alone put the guy among my top ten candidates running.

Fuck the DH
I thought these people were simply a D&D stereotype, but someone I like is one of those people who talks about electing a serious progressive because “they’ll call us socialists no matter who”, but also thinks Bernie is a narcissist who needs to go home because he enabled Tump by insisting Hillary didn’t play fair. I have a “centrist piece of poo poo” side to me and even I don’t get these people. There’s a lot of people on the left I don’t get, though, especially when it comes to IDpol.

Yeah I thought these “I’m progressive and heavily invested in Hillary” people were illusory figures dreamed up by fatigued Bernie supporters, but they do exist. Da gently caress.

Pretty good summary of Biden leaning into the punches from Kamala:

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/06/joe-biden-vs-kamala-harris-bussing-and-race-issues/592912/

quote:

"I do not believe you are a racist, and I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground, but I also believe—and it’s personal, and I was actually very—it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country. And it was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing. And you know, there was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me. So I will tell you that on this subject, it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously. We have to act swiftly."

This was no spontaneous attack—Harris had clearly planned the ambush, and it worked. Biden was defensive. “It’s a mischaracterization of my position across the board. I do not praise racists. That is not true,” he said, rebutting an attack that Harris had not made. What was to come was even shakier. Biden meandered through a confusing response, invoking his career as a public defender in Wilmington, Delaware; riots in that city after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination; and his work as Barack Obama’s vice president, without spelling out what this added up to. Harris was unimpressed. “Do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose busing in America then?” she asked.

Biden insisted that wasn’t his position. Harris was still able to be bused to schools in Berkeley, he said, because the local government made that choice. “What I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education,” he said.

This is a thin defense, as Biden must have known. Throughout the civil-rights movement, southern governments raised the banner of local control in their fight against civil rights. The federal government ought not to force measures such as busing or integration itself, they argued. The fact that Biden’s stand against federally mandated busing was a political winner is a reminder that Delaware is south of the Mason-Dixon line, geographically and at times politically. But as Harris was quick to point out, only Washington had the muscle to step in and force the hand of local governments using local control as a smokescreen to maintain discrimination.

“There was a failure of states to integrate public schools in America,” Harris said, noting that even schools in the famously liberal Berkeley were barely integrated two decades after Brown v. Board of Education. “So that’s where the federal government must step in. That’s why we have the Voting Rights Act and the Civil Rights Act. That’s why we need to pass the Equality Act; that’s why we need to the pass the ERA. Because there are moments in history where states fail to preserve the civil rights of all people.”

Biden was by now on his heels, sputtering about old votes.

“I supported the ERA from the very beginning. I am the guy who extended the Voting Rights Act for 25 years and got to the place where we got 98 out of 98 votes in the United States Senate doing it. And I also argued very strongly that we in fact deal with the notion of denying people access to the ballot box,” he said.

Biden’s long record is a double-edged sword: He can point to votes for the Equal Rights Amendment when it was a hot-button issue the first time around, but he also served alongside men such as Eastland and Strom Thurmond, and his dredging up of this history cuts both ways.

Finally, he finished, sounding petulant: “Anyway, my time is up. I’m sorry.”

The potential double entendre, applying to both his answer on the debate stage and his command of the Democratic race, was not lost on anyone who heard it.

Pretty much every news org in the country is running with "Harris killed Biden"

I still can't believe someone would say this in 2019.

It's a lovely question, but I think Kamala is being disingenuous. First off, who "abolishes" their own personal health insurance. That's dumb. Second, if that was what anyone intended the question to mean, why did none of the "Medicare Opt In" candidates raise their hand to that question? Surely if they think Medicare opt in is the path to full coverage and it will convince people to join over time they would want to "abolish" their own insurance to get on that plan.

You also have to consider that Kamala pulled this exact same stunt of declaring she would abolish private insurance during her town hall in January before walking it back the next day when casual viewers weren't paying attention.

she also claimed she wouldn't meet with aipac at their conference or whatever, and then had a private meeting with them in her office instead. she loves doing that poo poo

If Biden's support doesn't visibly deflate after last night, I don't know what will get people to stop supporting him. He looked and sounded like a confused, angry old man--like Trump without the orange tanning spray.

That busing argument was absolutely ridiculous. You're really going to stand on a debate stage, running for the Democratic nomination in TYOOL 2019, and explain to us that no, really, you were FOR busing, just against the federal government using its authority to enforce it? This was literally the Southern segregationist argument--that the states and local governments should be allowed to police themselves in the matter, when it was plainly obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that they weren't.
