I agree, but I think she'll have to do a lot worse than average to be considered a "major failure." The narrative (and Biden's chances) require her to do well so she can be propped up as the Bernie alternative, and sitting her at the kid's table just shores up her chances of being seen as doing well (at the very least, better than the others). Plus I think she'll do fine even in the crowded format. She's sharp and she's prepared.

Would be funny to see her flail and get dunked on by Beto or the Klobb or something. Should be interesting either way.

The reality is that the only person that isn't running for a book deal, a cabinet position, or to pad out their lobbying cred tonight is Warren. We're probably not going to get anything too interesting from the candidates themselves.

I think the real potential breakout stars tonight will be the audience. We're going to have an auditorium filled with well to dos given tickets by the Florida Democratic party and obviously salty lesser nobles that paid nearly two grand for a ticket and only got into the under card debate. This is all being moderated by dumbass brainwormed MSNBC pundits. I'm not hopeful per say but there are the ingredients there for something magical to happen.

It was randomly selected. Doing it randomly is giving undue deference to a host of nobodies. Doing it randomly meant there was, what, a 20% chance that the top 3 would be on the same stage? (1*(4/9)*(3/8) = 16.6)

They'll do that thing where Warren talks about cancelling student debt and the rich gently caress donor audience booing, and then going "looks like the Dem base doesn't want it".

People are spiteful assholes who want everyone to have to at least go through the same misery that they did, and many people take it a step further and want others to have it worse than they did.

Also capitalism conditions people to think that they are always competing against each other: if some people benefit from something it must follow that the rest of society is hurt by it. It never occurs to these people that society as a whole improves when a disadvantaged group (racial minorities, women, LGBTQ, poor people, people with student debt, etc.) is helped in a significant way.

According to regressives the civil rights movement didn't just help black people, it hurt white people. Recognizing same-sex marriages doesn't just help gay people, it hurts straight people and "traditional families." Increasing the social safety net doesn't just help poor people, it hurts rich people despite them still being able to remain filthy rich with a higher marginal tax rate.

I never understand why some people who go through difficulty don’t have a mentality of “I faced hardship but I hope you never experience what I did and I hope the world improves to give you peace.”

Versus “I had it tough so you should too.”

Thursday will be a big deal. Definitely not today. We have hardly heard a single thing from Biden. He hasn't worked in 2 years, hes a human gaffe machine, and hes most def lost a step based on the small instances I've seen him.

Hes gonna gently caress it up at least once. I guarantee you. The question is how much will his polls drop

I think there is a non-zero chance he skates through, at least this time. With nine other people on the stage, there won't be too much time for any one candidate and I could see a lot of the cross-talk and attacks going in Sanders' direction.

Not sure when voters are going to start paying attention to his "gaffes" (his terrible record on almost everything that matters). I don't doubt that he'll make mistakes... but somewhat despair at the idea that its magically going to start mattering at the debates.

Yeah it loving pisses me off. I am a top 15% earner in the US, am white, straight and have an advanced degree. I went through a lovely libertarian phase in college. But now I scream from the rooftops "yes, raise taxes on ME too, dammit" but all the lovely liberals in my demographic I deal with are still very much FYGM. It's a deeply held American value and it's insidious and hard to change

I am thinking solely in terms of what impact the debates will have.

Some people sink for the dumbest reasons.

Like remember when everyone wrote off Kucinich because the moderator brought up that he was quoted as having seen a UFO ?? - Which literally is just something in the air that you're not sure what it is exactly.

I'm more hoping Biden polls a Rick Perry gaffe. Just something like that will get lots of people looking elsewhere

It's an open question, but it did hurt him before in both the 2008 and 2016 primaries. Also, keep in mind that at the moment, the vast majority of people are paying almost zero attention. Seriously, just by keeping up with the primary thread you would be investing more time and attention in the primaries than a good 95% of the population.

Her anti-vax stance is disqualifying and her attempts to walk back that position since gaining national attention have been not great.

Edit: to be clear, her saying she supports vaccination but is skeptical is pure dissembling.

If you think that was a substantive interview then lol. The Chapo guys were just being civil and trying to elicit some soundbites about socialism, or failing that get her to go off on some Age of Aquarius bullshit, which she most certainly did at the end.

If you found her arguments persuasive then you'd probably really enjoy Live Like A Lobster by Dr. Peeperson
