https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGOTYfGMyoE What is theHunter: Call of The Wild? theHunter: Cotw is a hunting simulator developed by Expansive Worlds released in 2017 and available on PC and all the major consoles. It is largely about tracking and stalking a variety of animals over hill and dale in a variety of reserves all across the world. Alternatively it is a pretty vista screenshot simulator. Is it good? Frankly it is probably the only hunting game worth your time. The tracking and hunting mechanics are engaging without requiring you to be a master hunter to have fun. The animals and reserves all look fantastic Is there multiplayer? Yeah, you can host servers for up to 8 players and play on DLC reserves you don't own. There is no crossplatform play. Is the name really smooshed together and capitalized like that? Yeah its dumb, they did it for trademark reasons. What platform should I get this on? At this time PC, there are numerous reports of crashing caused by the implementation of the TruRacs system on the console versions and this is unlikely to get much better due to consoles limited hardware. What the heck is a TruRacs? TruRacs (True Random Antler Configuration System) is a system originally implemented in theHunter: Classic that tries to create realistic and varied antler appearance for the various deer as opposed to having one or two models per trophy rating. Put simply its procedural generated deer antlers. Currently it has been rolled out for Reindeer, Caribou, Roosevelt Elk, Water Buffalo, Moose, Blacktail and Whitetail deer. Is there Fishing? No Do I need the DLC? No, the base game reserves are excellent and you could easily get hundreds of hours out of them. The weapon packs are well modeled but mostly side grades. What DLC should I get? Reserves: All of the reserves are beautiful and have a distinct feel the wiki has a good overview of the species on the reserves, but if you can only pick one make it Vurhonga Savanna it is the most unique map with a diverse variety of species featuring two of the Big Five among others. Tents, ATVs, and Ground Blinds: Should have been included in the base game. ATVs are the only vehicle in the game, Tents allow you to setup personalized fast travel points around the reserves and Ground Blinds are deployable concealed positions you can shoot from that cause less hunting pressure. Trophy Lodge: There's now two Trophy lodges, the difference is mostly styling. Still the only way to display and save your hunts. Will probably add more as paid DLC if these two don't strike your fancy. Weapon Packs: You can largely pick what you want based on what looks interesting to you, they're fairly inexpensive and go on sale often, but I've included some reviews in the post below. Tree Stand and Tripod Stand: Create raised shooting platforms around the reserve like the buildable towers you can find dotting the reserve but in places of your choosing. Slight bonus to concealment and you cause less hunting pressure while shooting from these . Loud when deployed. Hub Cat fucked around with this message at 07:54 on Mar 31, 2020 |

All credit to Det_no for this great guide from the old thread"Det_no posted:Personally I think figuring things out is part of the fun. If I were new, I'd go mess around a couple hours and see what I discover but if you are completely lost or feeling frustrated, here are some tips. The .243 is fairly effective against your average deer(whitetail, blacktail, roe and fallow) especially with the polymer ammo but the .270 is a solid upgrade. For the bigger deer like Red Deer, Elk, Caribou, Reindeer and also Black Bears you want to be looking at the 7mm or the .45-70 with the 7mm being the better choice if you favor longer range shooting as the lever gun(.45-70) loses effectiveness beyond 100-150m, they also work on Moose but it requires good shot placement if you don't want to spend a lot of time tracking. The .338 is the only choice for large animals like Bison etc. So tldr usual recommended progression is .243->7mm->.338 for maximum species per dollar but personally I feel like the .270 is worth spending the cash on to increase enjoyment now if you aren't a super great shot and the .45-70 is worth looking at for a fun time after since its been rebalanced a bit(the problem being it only takes the lever scope and so your choice ends up being a good scope you use for all the rifles in the Hyperion 4-8 or the Lever scope which is only useful for the 2 lever guns). The .30-30 is largely a novelty because it's basically as effective as the .243 but with less effective range. Ammo Choice: Hollow points end up being better in certain situations particularly if you're not going to make a double lung or heart shot. In practice a marginal shot with a hollow point usually ends up being a faster kill than a marginal shot with a poly bullet. Buttt... a big way a lot of shots go sour is hitting a leg or at a severe angle and the poly bullet wins there because it goes through and hits *something* where the hollow point stops in flesh or bone. (also lets you be lazy and just aim for the front legs and score heart shots) It's hard to hit frontal heart or lung shots at all with most hollow points which is probably where a lot of people go wrong when they are using callers (and butt shots on fleeing animals are just worthless obviously). So a lot of words to say 99% of the time use poly-tip or hard cast ammo if you can maximize number of organs hit(because instantly downing an animal means less tracking) but soft points are fine and good if used correctly. It doesn't really matter as much now that quick kill is dead and buried.(the soft points on the .243 are kinda bad though because they have bad penetration and bad damage numbers) Hub Cat fucked around with this message at 23:33 on Jun 19, 2020 |

An integrity chart from Arsonide, the full chart is behind the link. This information is now contained in the ingame codex Weapon Pack 1: Only .22lr rifle and the Crossbow is a good way to try bow hunting or add a quiet option to your loadouts. Probably worth getting on sale if you're interested in Bow Hunting.
The Koter CB-65 Bow is the best compound bow in the game but the actual increase in effectiveness is marginal, and the range-finding bow sight greatly simplifies aiming with a bow if you're inexperienced, Point red dot at target hit E, aim at green dot and fire. Tracer arrows light up and highlight wounded or downed animals in the dark. The Nightvision binoculars have a built in rangefinder, and that ugly green filter. A 1-4x Nightvision rifle scope is part of the package. Duck and Goose pack: Still don't really recommend these packs unless you love hunting birds, but 20g isn't bad since the revamp. The animals and callers are included in the base game but it's easy to setup hunt zones with the decoys . The blinds are useful, Setup blind call birds shoot when they come down(Decoys are basically the same idea and they work best when used together) Duck on water, Goose in field you get the idea, assuming they don't break spawning on them again this week Hub Cat fucked around with this message at 03:23 on Jun 20, 2020 |

I was stalking a boar for like 15 minutes. When I finally caught up and was ready to take a shot I fat fingered the right shoulder button and whistled at him really hard. He was not impressed and bolted off never to be seen again.

I think the worst is when you spot an animal, get into a great shooting spot then spend a couple minutes trying to call it in decide it must have been too far to hear the call get up and it runs off because it was stuck on a bush exactly where you couldn't see it like 30 feet away

The only problem I have with the DLC weapons is that none of them cost ingame money and it ruins the ~balance~ they had going on. Grind 36k for the Regent Magnum or oh hey have this drilling rifle / etc for just the cost of ammo. Sure, you still have to grind pistol/rifle/etc score to use the better ammo, but.. eh.

When I shoot the random birds (not ducks or geese) out of the sky, is there a corpse to find? I thought I had a pretty good idea of where he went down, but I couldn't recover anything.

Unfortunately no, downed animals are invisible to live animals and the only animal on animal interaction is that pumas occasionally will stalk and kill deer.

The direction of the cone is the direction of the wind. The line is the direction you’re facing. If you’re walking and the line is in the middle of the green cone, the wind is at your back, carrying your sent forward. This is bad because animals downwind will catch a wiff of you early and bolt. Conversely, if you’re going the opposite direction into the wind, you can get extremely close before they notice you. Wind doesn’t have much effect on bullets so I don’t worry about it when lining up shots. It can make a difference with arrows or bolts though, so I adjust for it a little when making long shots. Short version: don’t walk in the same direction as the wind.

There is also some poo poo blowing around through the air if you look closely enough. Little particles of fluff, grass, leaves, etc. These give you an indication of wind direction but also wind power, which is something the UI will not tell you. The wind might technically be moving southwest but at such a low velocity that it's negligible. Another thing I've learned by sitting in on the developers on Discord etc is that smell takes time to propagate through the air. It isn't instant.

Had my first properly lovely bug. Power outage in the neighborhood, booted up the computer, started up the game and it told me that the save was corrupted, and asked if I wanted to delete. I clicked no, and the game told me no save was found. After clicking around a bit, never actually deleting the save, I was back on the main menu with a perfectly functional save. I did the jig for a couple of sessions, the weird error message popping up each time, and there were never any issues with the save. Yesterday I decided to see if I could fix it though, so I made a backup of the save folder in the documents folder, confirmed that I wanted to delete the "corrupt" save and was back at the main menu with no save. Restored my backup, and, well, it was still gone. That's about nine hours gone, which isn't that much in a game like this I guess, but still rather annoying. I'm well on my way on my new save, and I plan to play this coop a lot, but I'm very worried about power outages now.

Mine is about 4 years old and still gives ~90% of the purchased runtime (10min ish), more than enough time.

Great thread. Great game. I've been playing this a ton lately and having a great time with it. The Yukon preserve has been fun to explore and do the quests in and getting the .270 has been a game changer.

Got the .270 with a dlc I guess, since I started with it? I don't want to buy any other weapon dlc until I've "earned" it in the game, but it's nice to be able to take on moose and bear from the start. Tried to take down a moose with the .243 because I thought I had the .270 equipped. Shot the poor thing three times before it disappeared into the wilderness.

That's weird unless they bugged the .270 into the dlc somehow. Moose would probably be hard to get 100% quick kill with the .270 without a heart shot but if it works for you. I guess a fun fact since this is a lovely post, if you call Roosevelt elk sometimes they will vocally respond to your call and you can use this to track them when they are nearby. Useful! And yeah, I dunno where the .270 came from, but it's an engraved version, I still have to earn about 200 rifle points for the proper version. Trophy Lodge maybe? I only bought that and tents. You want to disable the game aa in the settings json it should be in \Documents\Avalanche Studios\theHunter Call of the Wild\Saves\settings\{your id number, probably only one folder} find GraphicsAA set the number to 0. Then open up the Nvidia Control Panel (you can usually just right click on your desktop) click manage 3d settings on the left go to program settings scroll the box down to theHunter or add the exe if it doesn't show up then mess with these settings. You can use better or worse settings depending on your hardware You probably also want to disable motion blur and heat haze I always hate that poo poo Hub Cat fucked around with this message at 01:53 on Jul 12, 2019 |
