I figure we ought to have a thread about discussing movies and tv, even though it's all bourgeois and terrible late-capitalist garbage. but even our conceptions of socialism and communism or whatever are bourgeois (i.e. they arise out of bourgeois society), so why the hell not. I'll start with a couple I saw recently:

Once Upon a Time in Pedowood: Overly long, though mostly enjoyable revisionist history about the Sharon Tate murders. The first couple hours drag a bit and are mostly dedicated towards waxing poetically on the limited shelf life of stardom, as well as establishing the working class bona fides of Brad Pitt and Leo Dicap. Finally we get to the latter half of the movie, which in many ways is a wet dream for conservative castle doctrinaire types. As expected, history is corrected yet polanski gets off the hook (this is pedowood after all). There's also not much nuance to the Manson villains: they are portrayed mainly as crazy dirty hippies rife with hypocrisy.

Lion King (2019): Same as the first one except uncanny valley. Kimba is saved from a life of volcel and (the animal equiv of) veganism to take back the throne from his regicidal incel uncle. the whole affair could've been avoided if Mufasa, the original king, had hooked his bro up. There's also some incestuous romance, but par for the course for any movie about monarchical rule. A good meditation on the dangers of voluntary and involuntary celibacy.

lol remember the movie Small Soldiers. Its a childrens movie about a toy company putting military AI hardware into a new line of GI Joe-type dolls and then when they come to life all they want to do is violently and mercilessly destroy the peaceful Other.

its so extremely pre-9/11 but im surprised it got made even then.

It's incredible to me how, just like the news media and the Democrats, entertainment media has absolutely no idea what to do with the Trump era. So they've decided to basically ignore the fact that he's president, and it's starting to feel like an elephant in the room. TV presidents have always been a West Wing caricature, and since that idea of a president is so obviously outdated, movies and TV just kind of leave out "The President" now.

Even the lib-level joke in the Zombieland 2 trailer about "dignity to the office" feels like a risk, because the rule until now has been that Trump is simply not acknowledged. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3uiCAqemV4

I'm still waiting for any kind of media that deals with the fear and loathing of this time, the uncanny valley-ness reality itself has had now for several years, and the mask that is slipping off so many of our precious norms. Even metaphorically. I think a lot of the reluctance to go there is reflected in the vast number of superhero, reboot, remake, and sequel movies and shows we have now, because going back to the past is both more comfortable and less controversial.

Under the Silver Lake comes close, esp. in regards to so much of the ritualized abuse in the circles of power that is now coming to a head, i.e. Weinstein and Epstein.

Hypernormalisation is of course the gold standard for examining the insanity of now, but it was made before Trump was even president.

Liberals understand Trump and Trumpism as an invasive, foreign disease that can be 'cured,' restoring America to normalcy. And thus the reaction to Trump in film is indistinguishable from the general trend of post-9/11 garbage. See all these trash Disney films, where the villain is this senseless, alien totalitarian who simply does evil for evil's sake

im really impressed with the show. i've read the comic a BUNCH and i was kinda cautious about the show, because i was expecting a straight adaptation. they've done some really good stuff with updating the show for a different cultural and media landscape, and changing the plot so that existing fans dont know literally anything thats coming, without losing the core themes of the comic

yes absolutely

its a show where the central conflict, the real core of the issue, is that Disney owns all the superheros and wnats to get defense contracts to use them, and the deep state is loving terrified of that

also superheros are rear end in a top hat celebrities who do awful poo poo and get away with it because it gets covered up

There's like one or two bits that go too far and the whole thing does kind of feel like Watchmen but dumb; but it generally doesn't do 2edgy4me just for shock value and has some fun critique of the MIC and modern media, plus Karl Urban chewing the scenery and neocon incel Superman. I'd say probably try it out even though I had some problems

3 is incredible because Lin took the script for an 80s ski movie and replaced skis with cars

It's a movie about the new kid in town learning to beat the rich popular guy while hanging out with the misfits, and it ends with a winner gets the girl loser leaves town race down a mountain

Also, Sonny Chiba!

Mr. Robot has managed to weave Trump into its plot well, though it does riff on Russiagate a bit in Season 3 with the Chinese Big Bad insisting they back Trump to put him into office.

Some more recent Trump era films: BlacKkKlansman, First Reformed, The First Purge

And then there's stuff like Spielberg's The Post that's total West Wing core but is very much based on the whole moral panic about Fake News and fellating the media as the way to bring down a corrupt president.

Hollywood won’t do Trump era content because they’re afraid of him essentially ordering his personality cult followers from boycotting their films, which is more people than any of us want to admit. I also read a theory how Trump and the republicans could severely gently caress up Hollywood’s access to the Chinese market if he really wanted to.

Hypernormalisation is definitely pro-watch, though.
