One of my favorite filmmakers, the Scottish-born and later Canadian citizen, Norman McLaren was an avowed socialist and it's reflected in much of his work. Though, he admitted that he stopped making more issue-based films after the 50s because living in Canada and working for the National Film Board put him at peace. Hell Unlimited, made in 1936, is a bold statement against war. It explicitly points out the same companies supplying weapons to both sides and calls for general strikes to protest war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiflnw_EsjU While McLaren was a pacifist, he made this wartime propaganda short, Keep Your Mouth Shut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So3fsGQ4Fsc His 1952 film Neighbours is an experimental "pixilation" anti-war short: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_aSowDUUaY And the 1957 short film A Chairy Tale has a man battling a chair that doesn't want to be sat upon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSRjRctL8XA Also, one of his collaborators, Grant Munro made this anti-war film, Toys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwDXuWr6dqI
