The idea of “fandom” is completely vulgar and I’m not convinced it’s not some Chaos style op writ large on the internet.

SUPERMAN'S GAL PAL posted:For the youngins out there lemon/lime/grapefruit is the old “citrus scale” used pre-2000 and a bit after because N/SFW didn’t exist yet and putting an X-rating on stuff just Wasn’t Done. After tumblr got purged of porn some users went back to that scale to tag with since just using NSFW would get the post taken down. What gets me is a 26 yo would be far too young to know that scale firsthand since it fell largely out of use by the mid-00s, so in addition to being a total rear end she has no appreciation for why that was used in the first place (partly because back then there was fear any queer content would get your site/account blitzed and that was just in the US). I'm not much older than her and I learned that term from old fansites/fanfiction. Fanfiction.net used to refer to smutfics as lemons for a time

You yourself participated in the cyberpunk 2077 fandom by posting about it on this website. It's just another vector for people to be obsessive and hostile to one another. Nothing special about it except that the stakes are often hilariously low compared to the intensity people show.

SUPERMAN'S GAL PAL posted:While I don’t know the details of the scenario something similar happened to the wives of the leads on Supernatural. There’s some ugly, hateful misogyny coming from inside the house when it comes to people - and to be frank it’s often cis white women - who are so invested in their fictional characters doing one another they let lose all grasp on reality. Worse than that, it was fans harassing the Supernatural leads' wives because they were convinced the actors were actually in a secret relationship with each other, and the wives were just studio mandated beards.

I've been reminded of another fandom controversy, this one with serious real-world consequences and major fandom splits. I am referring to the Arian Controversy. Back in the 3rd and 4th Century, a bunch of Christian theologians, who apparently had nothing better to do, argued over Jesus Christ's exact nature. Was he totally god, partly God, God-lite, Arius is representing the "Not-so-much-God" side, and Athanasius is the most prominent member of the "Totally God" side. They argue over homo-ousios vs homoi-ousios, super-christological hypostases, and other concepts no one outside of a theology department has cared about ever since. At one point, Arius is arguing when St. Nicholas (yes, that St. Nick) gets so righteously pissed, he hauls off and smacks Arius. Of course, you can't do that until after someone's been declared a heretic, so Old Nick [technically not a saint yet] gets thrown in jail, but Jesus and Mary tell him he's cool and give him back his robes. [There is no record of Nicholas of Myra attending the Council of Nicea, so this part of the story is most likely false. It would make a hilarious Christmas tradition, though] Eventually, Arius loses the argument, and gets exiled, with all books promoting his side ordered to be burned. Then Constantine brings back Arius and exiles Athanasius. Then Julian the Apostate re-instituted paganism and allowed Athanasius back, on the grounds that letting Christians fight each other over petty religious differences was the smartest course to take to take their religion down a notch. (A wise man in this; not so wise in the "land war in Asia" department.) Arianism was officially declared kaput at the Council of Constantinople. By this time, Arius had (according to his enemies) poo poo himself to death, and Athanasius had acquired the cool nickname Athanasius Contra Mundum. Eventually, the power of orthodoxy and the whole "burn the books" policy led to Arianism pretty much vanishing. And most Christians don't even know about this. Next: the Pseudo-Isadoran Decretals

Fans called the police on one of the leads spouses at a convention, stating she was a sex worker. I actually think this may have happened more than once. As for "problematic height gap" stuff, there is a weird internet contingent that seems dedicated to declaring various relationships pedophilia. I've seen the argument about 26 year olds dating 23 year olds, and about a 15 year old dating a 14 year old. I get the feeling a lot of these folks are just deeply suspicious/jealous of "relationships" generally.

Not quite a "meltdown," but more in the vein of "these casual plebes can't understand the original vision and superiority" grognardery: Baldur's Gate 1 compared to Baldur's Gate 2. I have no idea how much of the writing is hyperbolic but the writer constantly keeps harping on "scrubs" and "casual" gamers.

Isn't Fallout the only game series where there are "fans" who think all of the games are bad? I know I've seen some people saying that each game in the series is bad at various points (as in, someone says that they hate every game, but still claim to be a fan of the games)

i could never get into og bg1 because the ui was so loving ugly (i did play the poo poo out of bg2 though) old school crpg fans can be loving weird though, i can’t forget the guy who went off about sjw bears in the enhanced edition https://steamcommunity.com/app/228280/discussions/0/1319962599254633033/ quote:Oh, to Hell with all this. Even the bears no longer attack you if you stumble into them. This is just getting ridiculous. Is there a Disney writer on the staff now? In the original game all you had to do was get near a bear, and it would attack you. Soon you would be fighting the entire den. No longer. If you want to fight the bears, YOU must attack THEM. We know this is true, because, in real life, it's the EVIL HUNTERS who attack the peace loving bears.

Fallout 2 is good but I wouldn’t recommend it to new players, not unless they’re already familiar with that particular style of old school gaming. New Vegas was alright but had lots of jank and an unfortunately shallow storyline. The rest of the games aren’t worth playing. My opinion is the only correct one, and I am sure this will end the discussion.
