Nice. But you didn't leave any space for traps inside the entrances. Traps are fun, stylish and a must have for any serious villain otherwise you might as well move from the island and just rent some office space.

The game is good enough that you can just mod it yourself with notepad if you want to. Increasing the minion capacity to 150 or 125 makes it a lot less painful.

The game rules, I just wish it had some kind of sandbox/freeplay mode, maybe with tweakable settings as well.

Anyone else who played it here ever do the silly distraction Topside Shack trick? You see that Topside Shack Grey Hunter's money started in? By building a bunch of them and putting doors with maximum security clearance on them you create spaces that your minions ignore but that attract agent attention- except there's nothing in them! They waste time cracking them open instead of poking their noses in your main base!

This game is great, I really hope the announced sequel lives up to it!

Oh yes. The shacks are very expensive but it works amazingly good. I put a barracks inside with some lockers, waste not.

This was a fun game, but I always ended up stuck at some point where I just couldn't progress on some objective, and entered a spiral of constantly being on red alert to fight off the agents while trying to get enough gold to just cover upkeep.

Nah, you fill them with distraction traps, it keeps the agents pinned down for ages.

This is more expensive, but yeah once you've got the capital to sprinkle your island with distraction shacks you can probably afford to put non-lethal traps in 'em.

Another trick I used was placing multiple doors at the front of the base, like a sequence of three at least. It doesn't help with the whole "agents are timing their entry to your minion's movements"-thing perfectly but it does break it up, because agents seem to need a moment to re-focus their attention once through a door, while your minions have their targets set and will happily move through the entire sequence of doors in one go. Sometimes (although not very commonly, there's probably a check against it in the code and it's only the stacking of doors that messes it up) they'd even re-focus onto the door they just came out of, which was always a laugh, especially when a minion lets them through and they stepped blinking outside.

Spoilers for a thing that hasn't been shown yet; For me the issue was with the economy, and how attentive you have to be with it least you lose more than you gain. I really wish money-making was more hands-off and you were allowed to focus entirely on the whole base building and management aspects.

My biggest headache was always the minions that would get stuck in your own traps. So you've have a great little maze set up at the front of your base or a bunch of shacks with dazed/confused agents and you'd send somebody out to get rid of the clueless agent of "justice" before they get too annoyed and blow your shack up. But the minion would just get caught by the trap activating again and again as agents come in large groups and traps have a small radius. So you'd end up needing 3-4 times as many social minions as any other kind just to save your own guys from distraction traps.

Poil
Mar 17, 2007

You don't have to put your serious traps in the main corridors, you can make some twists and turns and build your base further in. The entire first bit could be small rooms and dead ends with doors, maybe a square corridor loop so agents just get lost walking back and forth and in circles and get hit by draining traps over and over. The "lethal" traps are kinda bad since they don't deal enough damage and turn agents into rage machines who start smashing everything and killing everyone.

There is also the way of making an entrance in the back of the mountain with a door, a short u-shaped corridor and another door leading out. Hours of fun for the agents.

That's the end result of the game shipping unfinished: there are a number of bugs that never got fixed, the worst of which is that social minions (who are supposed to reduce heat from minions) actually generate more heat than they can possibly reduce, making them absolutely useless if you don't mod them. Also, there were supposed to be other features: missions were supposed to be way more involved (with actual player choices affecting the outcome,) minions were supposed to have special abilities, henchmen were supposed to have personality traits that made them act in certain ways, that sort of thing.

Instead, they finished the game, but only just. At a bare minimum, I'd either fix the social minion heat bug or dramatically increase the cash flow before playing.

Not pleasant when angered.
I never really bothered with the lethal traps, my primary defense were intelligence drainers. Gas Traps, stupidity traps in outside shacks, that kind of thing. When an agent hits zero intelligence they forget everything they've seen up to that point, and when they leave the island they report nothing found and drops your heat rating.

One tip(exploit) I used a lot at the early game was BEFORE you grabbed the maid, you get a command center up and send your henchman and every non-essential worker out to rob and steal on the world map. Until you grab the maid, nothing you do raises heat, so you spend a while just letting the robbery spree go on until you've got a million or so saved up in the bank then you call everyone back and grab the maid to continue the game.

In addition to the empty shack rooms Grey Hunter is already going to try, the windy hallway of doors was my primary defense against enemy agents as well. Traps, while sometimes good for a laugh, take up a lot of space, a lot of power and a lot of money. Ultimately not being worth it.

And while we are evil you actually don't want to murder everyone who sets foot on the island; that's a good way to set yourself up for an infinite heat generating feedback loop as more and more agents visit your island looking for the last group of agents that visited your island. Eventually they start shooting first and asking questions never (this is especially fun if you have a hotel set up on the island, as well). The giant pile of bodies that tends to build up at this point will generate a shitload of heat if anyone does manage to escape and while your minions run around cleaning up the mess it is a real moral sapper.

In the end, the best way to deal with agents (that aren't already violent) is to have a camera watching your fun-house entrance and have your social minions escort people back outside. Doesn't work against all intruders but the ones that do slip through can be easily taken care of.

Grey Hunter I don't know if you realize but the reason the whole barracks thing happened was because a minion got trapped between the two rows of bunk-beds and started beating on the bunks trying to get out. It looks like they'd have room to exit but the locker model actually occupies the entire square it's on (as do all objects) and that space between the two bunk rows is inaccessible. It will happen again if a sleeping minion decides to get out of the bunk and into the center zone.

If I remember correctly, you can place beds in such a way that only one side is accessible and they'll still work fine. The one guy getting trapped between the rows was a freak accident but if you move the beds over it'll prevent others from getting trapped and give you more space to place more lockers against the other wall. Until you're able to research other equipment the barracks takes up a shitload of room since one locker only supports 1 minion and you gotta squeeze as much in as possible to save space.
