I want to like Horde but yeah the length of a match is absurd. I've only played the one match so far but can't see anyone sticking to the end if it will seriously take 2 hours each time. I'd like for them to allow you to choose your amount of waves like KF2 does, have it ramp up quicker depending on the length you've chosen so it's not like one extra enemy per wave like it is now. I'm also dreading joining a match when someone's already picked the guy I've spent all the time leveling and I have to choose someone else at level 1 because I haven't touched any other classes yet. The whole thing just screams of "get something in there we'll add more to it later" to me but that could just be the cynic in me.

If anyone else is having Framerate hitches or freezes especially during cut scenes uninstalling the Ultra texture pack completely fixed the problem for me. Got a your GTX 1060 isn't supported message on launch and thought that was the reason the game ran like rear end and started turning everything down but after removing the texture pack I could set everything else back to high/ultra.

Finished Gears 4 and immediately started this so the QoL changes are more apparent. Made it to the first part of Act 2 and it's pretty good so far. The writing in these games has been improving with each title while keeping the ham and cheese. That part with Cole driving an exploding bike into the huge monster's mouth was hilariously stupid and I loved it. The health bars for big enemies are a welcome addition and you can turn them off if you so desire - all the accessibility options are Extremely Good in general. You'll still be mostly going with that Lancer + Gnasher combo from every game, but weapon balance seems better in general. I like that you no longer go through the laborious crouching animation with some of the heavy weapons. Standard enemies seem to have much less health which is something I'm ambivalent on since the only game where I found them to be bullet sponges was the first. The tweaks done to the Down but not Out system for player characters are nice - I've played all these games on Hardcore the first time and it was too easy to cheese your way through in 4 (don't remember 2 or 3 too well) since you could be revived from everything, even almost every explosion barrage. Direct explosion hits and torque bows immediately gibbing you adds some much needed challenge, so does the revive cooldown timer. Jack is ok but so far the upgrades feel rather pointless and just there. Still haven't ventured into the ~~ open world ~~ yet so we'll see how that goes.

Can't wait to try Horde mode once I'm decently into the campaign since that's always been the highlight of the franchise for me.

Are manned turrets gone from Horde mode? I have fond memories of using structure-boosting cards and mouse aiming to utterly-destroy entire waves as Carmine, but I don't see them available as Del.

So better or worse than Gears 4? The series still peaked with 2, but I've found stuff to enjoy in each of the games. The character stuff gets better in each game (except for 4 because JD suuuuuucks), but 2 managed to strike the right balance between character pathos and incredibly stupid Roland Emmerich levels of destruction. 2 still has the best campaign because THEY HAVE A GIANT WORM.

Does this game have A GIANT WORM?

Way better than Gears 4 imo. I don't think anybody is going to say this is worse than Gears 4 (I'm sure there's folks who will and believe that and that's OK), but overall, way better.

Also, I'm seeing some goons playing things like Horde Mode solo, or just overall playing solo and I just want to send a friendly reminder, we have a nice, friendly goon community here. IDK when Gears became this bad since I only played 1 and loved it despite GFWL and then hit 4 a few weeks ago in this terrible microsoft store, uninstalled that one 30min in or so. Now 5 starts with great visuals a great premise end just ends up being loving terrible. What made Gears good in my book was a great pace, good game design in general with a few exceptions and a pretty drat good flow accompanying game ideas like active reload which was there in visual AND SOUND which has not been recreated in 4 or 5.

I couldnt give less of a poo poo about its multiplayer because its just a bad 3rd person shooter which I get nothing of playing on a PC. 3 was the last one actually developed by Epic, every one since then was developed by a completely new studio Microsoft created for the express purpose of churning out Gears sequels. Same with how Halo Reach was the last Halo made by Bungie.

It's really striking comparing Microsoft's philosophy of letting the developers go but keeping the IP to churn out impersonal sequels forever versus Sony doing the opposite and keeping developers while letting them move on to new IPs and projects.

So I looked things up and I don't know what the series expects to gain by having a binary "who lives who dies" choice in the game. Gears of War isn't Wolfenstein, I doubt it has the balls to write two divergent storylines for Gears 6 because one or another gets killed off. Even Wolfenstein hadn't managed diverging timelines that well until they established that multiverse theory is a thing. Gears doing it just makes me think they won't give a good answer as to why the "save X or Z" moment is meaningful, and they'll ignore it for the next game by introducing more randos rather than develop characters who aren't Kait or Marcus.

I think I might hate this game. I just tried unsuccessfully for the last 30 minutes trying to get a good horde match started. Since there can only ever be one class per game, there's almost always one person who wants to be the same as someone else, waits until the game decides for them, and then quits when they don't get their choice. The one time I managed to get a full game started, 3 of them scattered, died in the very first wave, and then immediately quit.

The story mode seems fine but it is extremely gears of war. They break up the gears of war sections with new open world driving around sections but the game itself hasn't changed much outside of some QOL stuff. I don't think this will bring you back in if you hated 4.

Edit: That said, you can try it for extremely cheap right now with the gamepass thing so if you were remotely interested you can probably get your fill for a couple bucks.

Oh, no doubt that this would be much better with a team of friends/goons, but I rarely get an hour of uninterrupted game time anymore so I don't want to be that guy that has to dip after 30 minutes so I play with pubs when I can. This is not a unique problem or solution to this game only but I just find the class system makes it harder to get a group and stay the whole way through unless you're coordinating with others.

I actually don't hate Gears of War 4, I think the gunplay is fun and the environmental segments with the windflares were cool setpieces. But the story is just so dumb and routine and predictable while still managing to be even dumber than what came before without the sincere charm.

So I guess you could say I enjoyed playing the campaign but hated listening to it. It controls well, the pacing is really good until the stupid mecha section at the end, and the sound design is awesome, but it lacks heart needed to make it a really great game like the first three Gears.

Somehow I don't think adding open world sections is really going to help Gears 5.

Echoing what others are saying about the Horde mode... Jesus, 50 rounds only? Seriously? That's insane. And the absurd number of difficulty settings for no reason. They should take a page from ME3's amazing multiplayer - 3 difficulties, ~20-30 minute rounds that get hard REALLY quick. We don't need the super easy rounds at the beginning at all.

I'm undecided on all the building stuff as I haven't really dove into it yet, but it strikes me that it's really dumb that only of the classes is locked in as the one that can build everything. You're either relying on some rando to know what to build or flying blind yourself if you got character bumped to Del right before the game start.

I can't see really playing and enjoying it, even with goons, unless they add shorter round limits at the VERY LEAST. Even then it's really flawed. Super disappointing. I really just want someone to make ME3's multiplayer again, ME:A almost did it right but the overall failure of the game killed it for me.

Campaign seems fine. Standard fare. The open world parts are pretty inoffensive, pretty much just a standard break in the action and you can jet right to the main objective if you don't care about getting all of Jack's upgrades, which are neat but not critical. Haven't tried Escape yet - sounds like it might be more interesting than Horde?

Edit: Ok, Escape is pretty cool. L4D by way of Gears. I can see playing this for a while.

it's round, like always

playing through on insane and the enemies are so bullet-spongy you have to really keep the active reload up 100% of the time or they will just waltz through entire magazines of lancer ammo without flinching. Also you have to disregard the intended design of certain set piece battles or you'll die. Like the Act 1 fight to save Carmine and the civilians, there's a manned turret set up for you to use and you're prompted to use it. But you will get smoked in 0.1 seconds if you get up on it, so I had to hang in the back by the crashed raven with the lancer GL and longshot to try to pop heads.

Some quick notes on Horde, having gotten through Advanced with pubbies a couple times:

-Consider placing your fabricator somewhere near the center of the map with a plan to relocate your buildings to the first power node spawn after wave 10. An extra 400 power between waves adds up fast.

-Passive upgrades are a trap beyond level 2. Get the first levels whenever you can, but once you're paying above 3,000 power for a 2% increase in damage you're better off putting that into the fabricator for buildings.

-Typical progression of buildings leans towards Forge>Locker>Razorwire>Turrets>Decoys, with passive upgrades being bought in between. Turrets and decoys become money sinks depending on where they're placed, and each one you place down shrinks your power profits from all the repairs they'll need. UPGRADE THE STRUCTURES YOU HAVE FIRST BEFORE BUILDING NEW ONES

-Del and Jack are an absolute must for getting to wave 50. The perks they get towards power and structures is too great to ignore (holy crap I can't believe they made discounted buildings a trait unique to one character), and Jack's ranged healing/zapping is fantastic for every situation.

-Speaking of Jack, once you get a forge up and running your job now boils down to hauling trash weapons to recycle; at level 3 the building gives you an easy 200 power for those lovely smg's. By the way, Jack can't upgrade his own buildings for some reason.

-Work out ahead of time how you want to split up ammo; the two boxes on the map are seldom enough for everyone. Generally I see the sniper get first dibs (the precision weapons rarely show up in the field) with the assault classes taking the other to keep their lancers from going empty (if you don't care about score you can just get yourself murdered and respawn with your full default loadout).

-I've yet to see a use for any of the ammo regen cards/perks. At level 3 Marcus's lancer regenerates a whopping 1 round every 3 seconds; and I never saw any of the power weapons regen at all. Just slap your guns into a locker.

-Rejects can eat a ton of ammo when fought head-on, but you can easily one-shot them with a melee-prompt from behind, or just murk them with a lancer bayonet.

-No matter what difficulty you play on, pubbies will spend the first few rounds running away from the safety of the fabricator and get downed in some far-off corner of the map. Just leave em' to die; after a few waves of not being able to play the game they'll either stick with the group or leave.

Horde's still fun, but I'm not a fan at all of how loadouts, structures, and cards are now tied to specific characters. And even with power being distributed evenly a game can become a lost cause if players decide to dump their share into passives, or bankrupt the fabricator fund with a million decoys.

Havent played since 3 which I loved, and I can't stand this version of horde mode. Takes too long, the character lock is terrible and being shoved into something you don't want in the last second and the match starts sucks. I really hope the whole thing is reworked by the second operation schedule.

That and the overall character choices are abysmal for MP, it feels like 10% of what any other gears game had out of the gate.

Passives definitely feel like a trap after the first couple levels. As Marcus it seems to be a better idea for me to just feed my excess power to the builders. I've also bought a repair tool a couple times so I can fix stuff on the portion of the map that I'm covering and it works out pretty well.

I also had a game where 2 people were Jack. We ended up not winning, that missing gun hurt.
