They entirely didn't pay attention to the fact that when you're in power, you can commit a little light treason. You never get prosecuted because it'd knock your society over doing it and cost everyone time and money they don't have. You can't do actual treason, people notice and get pissed at you. They're really bad at everything, even corruption.
