GoluboiOgon posted:part of the wierdness about the hero being cherokee is that he is (loosely!) based off of real life televangelist oral roberts, who had a stranglehold on tulsa, ok. even the "tower of power" is based on the real prayer tower at oral roberts university. note how this monstrosity tops the distorted golden cross with a burning flame like that off of a refinery. Thank you for this. I was unfamiliar with Oral Roberts' backstory (besides him being a televangelist grifter), so it helps to see where the author is loosely basing his story on.

New page, new day, new chapter: That's all for today. I want to give everyone a chance to get caught up. Chapter five is a little bit longer (8.5 pages), so I'll save that for tomorrow.

This is the second time they’ve introduced an evil cultist right after discussing the protagonists, making it sound like they’re describing the protagonists. Go back one or two paragraphs, and the cultist is mentioned in passing. I had to go back to make sure the professor lady the author insert wants to bang wasn’t a secret cultist spy.

I should write up a brief synopsis for each chapter and a list of characters as they are introduced. It will probably get even more confusing as the story unfolds. In short: the protagonist good guys are horrible monsters.

I love SoF magazine. They led one of the big civilian fundraising efforts to support the Mujahideen in the 80s, they would just buy guns and send them to Afghanistan to fight the evil Soviets. Of course these dudes went on to become the Taliban. There are full page ads on the back cover of many early 80s SoF magazines urging readers to support these "Afghan Freedom Fighters". All the tough dude badass vets with POW/MIA flags on their house would get out of watching Cannonball Run in the theaters and head home to write tax deductible checks to the Taliban. It's loving hilarious. Pryor on Fire has issued a correction as of 14:42 on Sep 25, 2019 |

I'm super busy at work this morning, but I'm going to try to write up a brief synopsis and character list when I get time. I should probably do that before we get much further. If anyone else wants to jump in on that, feel free. I'll compile everything and put it in the OP. Chapter 6 is a bit long, so this is it for the actual text today (probably). Caro enters the picture...

I remember reading somewhere that during the middle ages the text of the Acts of the Apostles was never taught/ read to the peasant classes because it features the early Christians living in a communal society and sharing everything in common. The medieval Catholic church didn't want the poors to get any funny ideas... American Protestant Free-Market Jesus™ is so far removed from the historical Jesus' ancient near eastern cynic/ eschatological philosophy (at least as far as scholars can credibly surmise) that it would be unrecognizable to modern Christians.

This is a work in progress. Please let me know if I've missed anyone or anything. CAST: Senator Courtney Davenport - co-owner or DAVROCK Development/ Unquestioned theocratic co-ruler of Tulsa. Junior senator from Oklahoma. Reverend "Gypsy Joe" Rockland - also co-owner or DAVROCK Development/ Unquestioned theocratic co-ruler of Tulsa. "The alcoholic, ex-convict son of a Negro father and Cherokee mother." Gets keen on Jesus while being tortured in a Korean POW camp. Olivia Davenport - Daughter of Courtney. Cult enthusiast. Susan Rockland - Daughter of Gypsy Joe. Follower. Somehow 100% Cherokee even though her dad is only 50%. Easy lover. Andrea Macranskia - Hungarian psychologist who rebelled against her commie upbringing after a year at the Soviet Sverdlosk Institute. Marked for death by the KGB and their coke-addled cultist henchmen. Nick Portumo - Royal Marine. SAS. Now a freelance military strongman with a hatred of cults. [Father born in Cyprus and given British citizenship after fighting against Franco in the Spanish Civil War (even though based on his beliefs it seems like he would have worshiped Franco.)] Rodney Crampton - Slimy, effeminate, long-haired ACLU (ACRA) lawyer who wrongly believes people should have equal rights under the law. Carlos Von Reinarch - Son of a nazi. Inherited a bunch of land in Paraguay. Cult leader of "Holy Order." Cocaine smuggler. Dr. Martin Westhaupt - Commie double agent working for the Sverdlosk Institute. Gets a young cultist to attempt to kill Andrea Macranskia while hopped up on fast-acting cocaine pills. Angel Caro - US Army Special Forces, adviser to the Paraguayan Army. Seducer of Susan Rockland. Gutter Phoenix has issued a correction as of 19:11 on Sep 25, 2019 |

In Nick's bio it was his father who fought in the Spanish civil war and got British citizenship after. I can understand the confusion because why the hell was that brought up at the Senate hearing? Also enjoyed the history of the region part, followed right after by Caro explaining the history of the region.
