I can believe some of that for the large swings in sex offenses, but there are recorded legislative complaints from riverboat operators in the 1840s that the number of dead kids in some canals was slowing their boats down  so I think the pre family planning era also just had a ton of casual infanticide.I don't think I'd want to live in that era, although I hear that some people in Arizona like the idea.
