Thread subtitle TBD Due to popular demand and major overlap from the habitants of Stoner/Doom/Sludge, here’s Psych/Freak: A thread for the latest and greatest developments in psychedelic music Seems like there’s been a lot of cool stuff going on lately in this admittedly pretty broad umbrella term/quasi-genre. And there is plenty of conversation to be had on the evergreen artists that have been poking out third eyes for the better part of a century. At any rate, there’s been enough stuff in the doom metal thread that is incredibly adjacent but left a lot of posters worrying that they are too off topic; I’m hoping this thread provides an outlet for that kinda stuff. Other things I look forward to: -rambling about Gram Parsons -getting recommendations on obscure krautrock (I feel like this plays here) -tour information for active bands (in the vein of how we operate in SDS) Here’s some stuff to get the ball rolling: Kikagaku Moyo - new and active, touring regularly with hooks and longform sets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8y3nM6tEqw Please mail me more weird post-Dylan acid-scorched folk like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C15LXv4uEDI poo poo I stole from the phiz thread years back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr0XWmEbiMQ It’s Halloween times - spin it for Roky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZEi-13NqF0 Sincerely, Norm The OP Ingmar terdman fucked around with this message at 00:13 on Oct 30, 2019 |

That whole album is great And speaking of the Byrds I've been listening to Gene Clark's No Other a lot lately...need to branch out to his other stuff. I'm also a decade behind on Brian Jonestown Massacre releases, any essentials there, or should I just work backwards?

A human heart posted:it's especially funny because that thread is just a dump of youtube links with no discussion, and check it out, now there's another one of those. So post and discuss, skidmark. I don't really know what is psychedelic or even how to adequately explain it, but a whole lot of the artists I listen to are apparently psych. I've never been a big fan of Cream, but I appreciate that they gave rise to a lot of bands I do like, such as Earthless, who come up a lot in discussions of stoner/doom/sludge. They check the psych boxes of long form jams and a bunch of fuzzy guitars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAMCQt_2R1I But then I see Mondo Drag getting mentioned as psych, and they're much more similar to progressive rock like Yes, albeit with a bit more fuzz. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVIO04DijJQ Youtube's music algorithm is really interesting and has introduced me to stuff I've never considered like African Psychedelic. This album African Scream Contest popped up a while back and I like it. Not at all what I would have thought of or sought out if I thought "I want to listen to some psych right now." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jk1JXc9ifRQ And what the gently caress is the deal with Goat? I came across them years ago when I first got into afrobeat (which I have a hard time pigeonholing them as), but they do have afrobeat elements. I think they capture the original 1960s psychedelic song structure and guitar sound, like Jorma Kaukonen and Paul Kantner's in Jefferson Airplane, better than a lot of "psych" bands, and the really dense percussion is cool. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SyPyBHJmiI Tame Impala does ok with the current mainstream spin on the original pop psych sound I think, but I like maybe 1 out of 5 of their songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI1Xe1sAPgY HenryJLittlefinger fucked around with this message at 17:04 on Oct 30, 2019 |

Here’s some good poo poo that I guess goes here, it’s a Thai wedding band that does some great space jamming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYGl-l0Toig To the best of my knowledge that’s the same band led by a guy named Beer that got discovered on YouTube and subsequently put out a few albums on some indie label in the US. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRg410DDeQE https://www.wired.com/2014/08/khun-narin-electric-phin-band/

There's a second volume of Scream Contest as well. On a related note, here's the title track of a great Nigerian psych rock comp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGu3l6aq8sA And it may be pushing up against the boundaries of the thread, but if M'dou Moctar comes to your town, see him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZvPoE0EH1o

Mdou Moctar is insanely good live. Not too much hyperbole to compare him to a modern-day Jimi Hendrix.

Here’s a road doc about acid mother’s temple’s 2002 USA tour https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zTlMXL4qFY it’s kind of slow but probably accurate to what touring internationally is like for a Japanese psychedelic band

So far he’s loving it Welp thanks for this, I now have ordered it on the heathen's format (CD). It reminds me a lot of Lord Sutch, just without the terrible vocals. To complete the contrasts his album has made a couple of worst album ever polls and lists according to Wikipedia so you know it's bad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSbScjc0cIk I still unironically listen to it. An edit so to not double post have another YouTube link to a lighter band that I think was someone's side project. There was only two albums released and this is the first one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h054zPv4-1s Turbinosamente fucked around with this message at 01:25 on Nov 9, 2019 |
