Someone else can confirm/deny, but my understanding is that those NZXT cases have really lovely airflow.

I just built my first PC in the NZXT 510 and it's actually not bad at all so far. With 3 120mm fans (comes with 2) and a Ryzen 5 3600 and Geforce 1650 Super, everything idles in the mid-30s and nothing breaks 60 degrees when playing BG3 at Ultra at 1080p. I'm only running a 550W power supply but with an AIO or better fans than the stock it should be fine?

Edit, since I page sniped:

What country are you in? NY, USA

What are you using the system for? 3D software, Blender and Unity

What's your budget? $1000 not including memory, we have that already

If you're gaming, what is your monitor resolution / refresh rate? 1440p/165 hz

We are close to several microcenters.

Get the Ryzen 5 3600 and peruse some finished PC part picker lists for what matches your budget, and then (IMO), order everything off of Newegg since they just put up their Black Friday price match guarantee if you're intent on building it yourself. Also weirdly enough, everything I ordered on Newegg arrived literally the next day to Manhattan, whereas the stuff I ordered on Amazon took at least a week no matter the size/price. Everything I've seen on Microcenter is like 10% more expensive than elsewhere except the new RTX 3000 cards (which they don't even have in stock anymore)

The case was $5 more expensive and my PSU wasn't in their stock, but they had a much better one for $40 off that matched the one I had priced already.

Yeah dang that’s a good deal. Wish I had waited a month to put mine together (and PCpartpicker doesn't show multi-item promotions like that, I think)

Jumping back a few pages to questions about airflow in the NZXT 500 series cases, by default they come with rear and top output fans installed for negative air pressure. After messing around with different fan positions and intakes in my 510, my idle temps are still in the mid-30s with a Ryzen 5 3600, but with negative pressure everything's much quieter. So I'd recommend just adding a top front intake, because apparently the case is designed so that the graphics card will draw cooler air through the empty PCI backplate slots when under load.

See my earlier post on this page about this! I have a 510 and the airflow's fine IMO, plus I really like the way it looks. The button's also recessed and you really have to poke at it to press it, I don't think a cat walking over it would do anything.

Plus the 2 included fans and pre-routed cables and velcro straps on the backside are really convenient

AMD is the much better value right now. The thread will probably recommend a 5600X, and so would I, except good luck with availability so why not save the money and put it towards a just-as-unlikely 3070! Samsung drives are overpriced and unnecessary unless you are moving huge files around constantly, so you can get the thread-favorite SN550, and 2TB worth, for less! If you're going full tower, I really like this Phanteks case, and you can remove the drive cages for better airflow. Add a few more fans, if you want, but with a huge noctua cooler and the included PWM fan hub, you can just tie the included fans to the CPU temp and have them idle unless temps go over 65 (they won't).

Also I can max all settings in Baldur’s Gate 3 and hit 60fps at 1080p with a 1650 super so if that’s the benchmark...

Perhaps a stupid question, but if I actually do manage to get my hands on a 3070 eventually, will I need to upgrade my 550 watt gold+ PSU? I used a power draw estimator (for a Ryzen 5 3600 with stock cooler, 16gb of ram and no LEDs) and it spit out that max draw under load with the 3070 for the whole system would still be under 400 watts.

The cut off for this cpu looks to be 95, but I don’t know when it starts to throttle down. If its around 80 then i can see a bigger cooler being worthwhile, otherwise its a waste of money / shiny pc bling.

Are those temps with overclocks or stock? Mine idles under 40 and hasn't gone above 65 in any benchmark tool yet with the stock cooler. I'd check if it's installed evenly, and mess around with the power plan settings if those are stock numbers.

So my plan is to build my 2 kids "Gaming PC's" for Christmas this year. (Gaming = RGB lights basically). They're only 8 and 10 and only play light games like Roblox and Minecraft.

My plan is to start them off with something economical, but still decent. Right now they're using 5 to 6 year old Dell business class laptops with built in graphics and they meet their needs adequately, though my son complains it's "laggy" on Roblox Arsenal and other kiddo FPS games.

Cost is a factor, but I will gladly spend a little extra for quality. I'm looking for the best VALUE in parts, not necessarily the cheapest. I'm an IT Admin by trade, but the last PC I built was around 2002. Everything since then has been business class hand me downs we retired from work.

What's your budget? We usually specify for just the computer itself (plus Windows), but if you also need monitor/mouse/whatever, just say so. I'd like to go no more than 600 dollars max for just hardware. I have accessories and Windows.
If you’re doing professional work, what software do you need to use? What’s your typical project size and complexity? If you use multiple pieces of software, what’s your workflow? n/a
If you're gaming, what is your monitor resolution / refresh rate? How fancy do you want your graphics, from “it runs” to “Ultra preset as fast as possible”? Kids have 24" 1080P monitors with VGA and HDMI inputs. 99 dollar Costco Acer monitors.

Please note I'm building 2 computers total, so the less expensive the better, but I am willing to pay extra for better quality parts like the WD SSD, and EVGA power supply.

I know absolutely nothing about the current state of computer hardware. The kids love RGB lights and stuff though, things that make computers "gaming" so I'll pay extra for fancy RGB fans, light strips, etc. It would be cool if they could customize the lights... I think thats ARGB. No idea how it all ties together though.

Here's a baseline build I put together. I really wanted to target a 3400G processor, but they're OOS everywhere right now. I also want the ability to possibly add a dedicated GPU in a year or two, so sizing the case, mobo, and PSU for a potential midrange GPU in the future is worth considering.

I appreciate any and all comments, feedback, links to better resources, etc.

This is a pretty sweet setup for those games: the Intel UHD 620 can crush Minecraft and from what I understand, Ryzen integrated graphics are waaaaay better. You could even throw in a 1650 or 1660 super in there down the line without replacing the power supply and have a pretty capable 1080p gaming rig (for a kid).

If you’re doing professional work, what software do you need to use? What’s your typical project size and complexity? If you use multiple pieces of software, what’s your workflow?
]If you're gaming, what is your monitor resolution / refresh rate? How fancy do you want your graphics, from “it runs” to “Ultra preset as fast as possible”? I'd be happy at 1440p 60 with a 27 inch monitor. If I can swing it, I'd go for a 144hz monitor, but if the build I end up on can't make use of it I assume it would be better to wait and just turn the 1440p 60 monitor into a second monitor in a year or so.

My current laptop is a Lenovo Y50-70, which has served me faithfully since the release of the Witcher 3. In an ideal world, I'd like to not be unsatisfied if I get a game on PC instead of PS5.

I don't want to deal with the tenuous availability of the latest graphics cards, I'm comfortable in the midrange of the previous generation, but I'd like to get the most for my money in the 200-300 dollar range and I'm willing to go up a little for a good deal. Ideally in a year or two I'd like to upgrade to whatever the next midrange one is without being CPU limited at that point. I'm comfortable going up to 1000 before monitor.

This is going to be in a bedroom, so while airflow is very important, I'd like to ensure that it's very quiet when I'm just leaving the plex server running.

I've been thinking of getting a second monitor or replacing my 24" 1080p monitor with a 1440 27"-er, am I screwed out of either solution with a 1650 Super?

For office work either should be fine.

That's what I thought, I guess I can scale down to 1080p for gaming. I'm going to try to grab the very nice 27" imac pro from my office and see how that works as a monitor.
