Hi Robert. Just wanted to say I love your podcast even though I skip half the episodes for the sake of my own mental health (due to the subject matter, not the podcast itself). Keep up the good work!

If we are doing requests, I'd love to see an episode on Shoko Asahara and Aum Shinrikyo. It's mind boggling how the world has utterly forgotten what was essentially a real life version of COBRA.

I loved those episodes too but whenever Henry breaks out his "hilarious" Asian accent I feel horrendously embarrassed to be listening. To their credit they don't do that sort of thing anymore.

Hey Robert, may I request an episode on Flint? Between the sit down strike, white flight, and the current water crises there is a rich history there that should be told more often.

That reminds me that anyone interested in BtB should also check out Swindled. They are on hiatus right now but their last season finale was about Flint. Much like BtB, episodes can alternate between crushingly depressing and rather humorous thanks to the host's deadpan delivery.

I got the impression it was just as much "gently caress Reagan" as "You go girl", imho.

I haven't listened to every podcast, but did they really get a Koch Industries ad, or was that just a joke?

It's not a joke. A lot of the time podcast ads are inserted automatically by an ad network the podcasters partner with with no input from the latter which occasionally leads to stuff like this.

Of course misguided ad attempts even without algorithms: the host of Swindled, a podcast that's as anti-comsumerist, anti-corruption and anti-captialist as they come, was personally contacted with an ad proposal from the Mike Bloomberg campaign of all people (whose ads ALSO appeared on BtB)

Or like the Quaker Oats radiation study. Basically Quaker Oats funded an MIT study on how the body absorbs radiation, which it did by creating a bogus "science club" at a school for mentally handicapped boys and secretly feeding them oatmeal that had been laced with radioactive materials. The crazy thing is that Quaker Oats did this to get good promotion at a time when they were competing against Cream of Wheat, and this is part of the reason why Quakers Oats became so dominant and Cream of Wheat faded.

So they ran a radiation experiment...to advertise oats? :psyduck:

Having Lacey on to discuss Gregor McGregor on BtB is spot on because while McGregor is otherwise perfect as the subject for podcasts about con artists like Scam Goddess, Lie Cheat and Steal, etc, the sheer amount of people that ended up dead because of him kind of takes the fun out of the story and sends him straight to BtB/The Dollop territory. This is a great middle ground.

I took an entire class in college called “Papal Indescretion” and it was about all the most hosed up popes and all the insane bacchanalia that they got up to.

Popes would molest nuns and then raise the babies as nuns and then officiate their own weddings to their own secret daughters that they raised in secret convents.

They hosted a grand ball and the Pope would assign high ranking Cardinal positions to the priest who busted the most nuts with all of Romes most expensive escorts.

My favorite was, I believe, Boniface the 8th, who was a steward of the Pope, and convinced the sitting pope that he was too old to be Pope and needed help. After the sitting Pope, John the 16th or whatever, gave him some of his papal authority, Old Boner Face immediately decreed the previous Pope a heretic and had him locked up in a tower and made himself full Pope. And the imprisoned Pope, a 78 year old man at the time, escaped from the tower and made it all the way to France before they found him and improsoned him again (and he escaped again, lol)

What I’m saying is there are probably 2-3 popes who could EASILY, easily, fill up an episode, and their crimes range from the comically absurd to Heironymous Bosch levels of hell and darkness.

And of course there's good old Alexander VI AKA Rodrigo Borgia AKA the guy you fist fight at the end of Assassin's Creed II.

At the risk of trying to hard on something that isn't really important, I think there are many male-identifying people who try to desperately quantify all things, since they have been taught it is unmanly to be emotional/reflect on emotions, so this is the closest way they feel it is manly for them to deal with the sadness of isolation.

The idea that there are things that don't need to be and should not be put in some kind of a heirarchy, a quantifiable datasheet (or even something which says it is quantifiable) is an existential threat to being a heteronormative man, and so there is this urge to put a number value on all emotions.

And yet, mention pronouns and those same men will scream "Why do you have to make things so COMPLICATED?" or "You can't just create new categories for yourself!"

Adam Friedland is one of the two co-hosts, and he and Stavros go on Chapo a couple times a year because these people are all just close friends who live in the same city.

Red Scare FUCKEN SUCKS and I literally have never met nor even heard of someone listening to it because they enjoy it. It’s like a purely irony-pill level show that just kind of blows rear end.

It does feel like an impenetrable wall of parasocial relationships but it’s easy to parse if you just take a step back.

This should be in the OP of the Disco Elysium thread on games (though with Final Cut it's a bit outdated)
