This is actually a hard problem to solve!

I worked on a RTS like 10 or so years ago where a balance patch made at least one mission in the PvE campaign impossible to complete. This necessitated another change so the campaign unit balance would remain static and future patches would only affect PvP modes. That is also a lovely solution, since there are two slightly different sets of rules the player needs to learn. Carefully rebalancing the entire game constantly on every difficulty was also not a great long term solution.

A little different with more of a MMORTS like this.

Well, I'd say I don't think they use player troop selections in populating missions so it shouldn't affect balancing the quests if they change around player's troops' stats.

FYI you get a free Hironeiden Cavalry unit from a level 24 training mission so don't spend your climax mission unit pick on them unless you want more than one :v:

It’s an important mechanic you need to understand. Your npc and enemy units will have huge lines. You notice instantly when your teams line collapses because everyone is taking way more damage. You being able to patch holes and disrupt lines makes maps much easier. It’s also another reason why the Scorpion is so crazy good with both the line attack deleting units and also busting a large portion of the frontline..

A couple of the last climaxes were big pitched fights, and I did get some mileage out of the front line mechanic in those. Probably would have gotten just as much mileage out of flanking with cavalry or simply fielding a scorpion though.

MY OPINION IS SEERS OF THE THRONE PROPAGANDA IGNORE MY GNOSIS-IMPAIRED RAMBLINGS
Speaking of Scorpions, I found a way to do decent damage to those Iron Scorpions in the crack mission. There's a special type of scorpion known as the Wild Scorpion. It's smaller, and has a shittier frontal attack skill. But it compensates for it with a number of things:

An attack speed booster skill. Which leads to hilarious situations where this scorpion just blitzes lines and annihilates entire units if they clump around it's front or back. The second thing it has is a PBAOE poison gas cloud DOT attack. This is basically the same attack that the zombie scorpion boss has. As in, the gas cloud that can wipe entire units in a matter of seconds.

For some reason the gas cloud bypasses all the "parts" of the scorpion to apply damage directly. On top of that, it applies a DOT outside of the initial damage burst. This also bypasses the armor. I've managed to get anywhere from 2%-5% of an Iron Scorpion's HP removed per cast via that skill. Not sure if this is because it uses poison/nature damage or because it's a DOT and bypasses the armor issues. If it's because it's a DOT then sorcerer's and other high damage DOT applying troops ought to wreck them. Maybe i'll check that out if I get the urge to take sorcerer's into a crack.

Turns out scorpions farting things to death is literally the ultimate medieval weapon of war. Who would have known?

Also, those lightningmancers you get from a subjugation are hilarious. They have a skill called "Thunderbolt Sector". When cast, it applies at skill level 3 and level 17, a skill that hits at almost 100%+ damage per hit twelve times. This is an AOE skill that generates bolts of lightning randomly within the area.

However, the bolts also count as projectiles, so they can hit multiple enemies at once. On paper the damage is middling. In reality as a result of it's ability to hit multiple units per bolt it's essentially the equivalent of running the slots at a casino with a good chance of getting the jackpot. While the damage variance is huge, when you pop it off in a massive crowd of enemies it's not uncommon to get close to 100K-500K+ damage on equal level hard missions depending on what it's hitting. Suffice to say that it all but wipes (But doesn't finish off, since the bolts are fairly spread out.) most units and is probably a top tier line breaker at the end game.

On top of that, it also reduces the defense of surviving enemies and there appears to be an upgraded version of Thunderbolt Sector called "Lightning Cloud" once you hit 5 stars. Not sure if it's better, but since it replaces Thunderbolt Sector when slotted and appears to have improved stats I assume so.

Also, also, I may have accidentally stumbled across a way to dupe troops. So I need to contact a dev asap. Unfortunately discord is not sending the password reset email I need to do it so I can talk to them. Is there some other way to contact them?

Those are cosmetic outfits. You get one or two as special milestones during the main quest, others as part of a pack when you bought the game (I think there are two different outfits.), and some as either cubic or diamond items.

On the whole, a fair number of the cosmetic outfits are available for free unlike in many games. Cubic is easily earned in game and outfits for cubic range from 2000ish to 5000ish in the store.

In addition to that, there are mounts and cosmetics for diamonds which are a cash shop item. While currently there aren't any ways to get a high speed mount without diamonds that I know of it's largely useless to do so at the moment anyways since the only place where they're really useful is some fields and that starter city when you hit the open world. Both are kind of defunct barring crafting later on. Also, many of the cash shop outfits are available as cubics.

All in all it's a pretty good system that prioritizes gameplay over making money.

I guess I’m bad at ranger or it’s not as good because I’m a gun boi now.

I also started leaning on longswords and everything is going much easier. Rifles are poo poo. I got so excited seeing them drop ogres in a single shot, but they’re so useless on bosses I just avoid using them.

I’ll miss one-shotting scorpions though. :sigh:

As people reach level 30, I'd love to get everyone together for crack missions with the goal of getting those juggernaut kills. (A notoriously beefy boss that has a strict time limit to kill while everything else falls apart around you). May have to gear ourselves around boss killing, though I admittedly don't know what's best.

There's only like... 4 missions in the crack rotation so it gets stale pretty quick.

Angel Halo, the dumb fort wall one with scorpions, the totem path, and the timer clusterfuck one with the juggernauts.

I'd like it better if it didn't take 5 clears to fill your daily quota, since those missions are around 10-20m apiece. If you do everything daily and don't fail anything it turns out to be quite a lot of time:

2 Tactical Defense -> 40m (no real way to make this shorter)
2 Tactical Invasion -> 20m (Just rush the portal and win)
2 Tactical Battlefield -> 20m (Pull the minotaur boss rto the watchtowers and dogpile him)
2 Rebel Fortress -> 60m (More if one of your groups fail, not uncommon since a lot of people have 0 ability to use siege weapons or kill the blimps at the end)
2 Kaedes -> 30m It's basically impossible to fail this one unless your team is afk
2 Sandworm -> This fight sucks and I don't do it
7 Dailies -> Generally around 1-1.5 hours? Depends how much your extremes/subjugations or each quests roll up, I never do secluded scarp because it takes forever, tomb of ancestors is okay assuming your party hits the boss at the end and doesn't spend 30m killing mobs, tomb of dragons is best and can be done in 5 minutes or less with a strong team.
All your subjugations -> 12 runs so about 40minutes.

Admittedly you can probably skip mostly everything except dailies for cubics and crack shards if you feel like it until they figure out some not-terrible loot system.

Writing is fun!
Slaughters are currently the best troop, alongside scorpions. It is due to their biggest weakness in dealing damage: Low accuracy and damage type (raw)

Low Accuracy isn't a weakness because no troop can get their agility up high enough to cause the slaughterers to miss.
Raw Damage isn't a weakness because no troop can get their armor up high enough to shrug off those hits.

Slaughters I believe are weak to magic damage, so magic AOES will destroy them, but that's a bigger concern in PVP, not pVE.

Can't speak for the other ones, but the elementalist is legitimately hilarious.

Imagine some weeb magical girl anime. Now imagine if some developer set this weeb magical girl down into a heavy metal as gently caress slug fest between hundreds upon hundreds of monsters and zealous humans. Now, imagine the developers also gave this magical girl the ability to turn herself into an electrified suicide bomber.

Note that said suicide bomber ability does not kill her and in fact gives her a damage shield. She also has a minor dodge that has her leap into the air and hit the ground so hard she craters it, killing anything nearby. Combine the both and you get ridiculous amounts of carnage.

Out of all the classes she feels like the only one that really doesn't belong there aesthetically given KUF's history. In fact, every other class seems to be a riff on past KUF games barring the gunslinger. She by contrast is just there prancing around the battlefield nuking things while heavy butt rock plays. On the other hand, she kicks major amounts of rear end so long as you build to have some proper single target damage outside of your pet.

Paladins, vampires, and possibly that Hexter orc class that Swallow Swalloo plays as are in the works. The first two are confirmed to be new classes they're going to add as soon as they're ready. The latter is something i've seen multiple people suggest is being worked on in private.

MY OPINION IS SEERS OF THE THRONE PROPAGANDA IGNORE MY GNOSIS-IMPAIRED RAMBLINGS
So to everyone that applied to GOON over the last week, you're now in. Sorry about the wait as well! As an apology, let me explain what happened:

So when it comes to the max population of the guild there are two things that are noticeable in the guild. One of these things is something called Guild Level. The other is max number of guild members. You would think that they're linked if you played past MMO's. Especially KMMO's. It turns out that they are not.

In most games the guild level would usually control the max number of guild members. That is, when they don't bother uncapping it or setting it incredibly high to begin with. This is especially true since it appears that the guild level has fairly decent limits to increase and the starting guild population is (or was, now that I figured things out) capped out at 20.

So we got the guild up to level 2 with 20 people. Which is probably an achievement of some sort! Except...When we did the guild member cap did not increase. This prompted a number of "What the fucks?" from people that noticed along with probably a bit of agitation from any goons waiting to join. I think one goon even withdrew his or her app.

(On a side note, if it was a goon that applied then you have my sincerest apologies. Feel free to reapply and we'll get you in ASAP. Anyone can accept apps at this point too so it shouldn't be long so long as someone checks the guild app page (which has a notification attached to it when an app appears) every now and then. Failing that, it's the first thing I do every day when I log on. And i'm currently on every day.)

Once that happened I did yet another (Seriously, i've done like a dozen of these so far.) look through of the various guild menus since it was obvious we were missing something. What I found was a small, damned near transparent given the background, + sign on the guild menu in the upper right corner. Clicking it gave me the option to expand the guild size by two for 100,000 contribution points.

I should add here that if you're hearing a loud thunk sound off in the distance that that might just be the sound of my head slamming into my desk at excessively high speeds.

So i've increased the guild size and everyone that applied is in. If it needs to be increased again i'll do that. Probably it will given that the game is becomingly increasingly popular going off of the application submission rate and the media attention it's getting. Just accepting apps forced me to add like 300K-400K worth of slots. So it's a good thing I didn't spend those guild points on skill tree boosts yesterday or the day before! :v:

The price of extension goes up per increase. Currently it's at 182K. So in an effort to ensure that we don't have problems getting apps accepted for the foreseeable future i'm going to reserve at least that many guild points points on top of the price for any upgrades to the guild we want to get. In addition to that, i'll be factoring the increasing price into purchasing upgrades for the guild going forwards.

As an addendum to all this, I still have noooooo fuckin' clue what guild levels are supposed to do. I'm guessing it has something to do with the war system? Also, yeah. That's a thing. On top of having a guild shop and a guild tree apparently there's optional EVE-esque territory control and warfare. It's currently not enabled but it's definitely a thing in some capacity. There's even an option for me to assign the ability to "Vacate a Domain" to members of the guild going off of the privileges and ranks page. So apparently the game has that going for it too.

On the plus side, the goons that ground out content for that next level have a profusion of points to spend in the store or where ever the game permits it. Accolade has merchants for that, including one that possibly gives the points to the guild I think. So if we run across another goon rush i'll just dump my personal contribution points and cubic into making sure y'all get in ASAP.

Edit: Also, as an addendum to that addendum people should check out the first community update that was put out. They've confirmed and announced a bunch of things including new content and a way to make sure you don't run out of resources like gold if you're upgrading and training like crazy. Basically it's a preview of the patch notes coming in the December content update.

This also includes an announcement that the devs believe that troop drop rates are kinda hosed. So they're adding them in as cubic shop rewards on top of being able to drop from end game content. Ditto for a whole bunch of new troops coming. I'm assuming this also includes making the cubic drop at the end of extremes and missions mandatory as well, so essentially cubic doubles not only as a way to get premium bonuses but also as an end game currency.

Also, daily mission caps may be going away or getting adjusted to factor in people who really like playing the game or are hardcore as heck and just blow through them.

Looking at the list of guild members we've finally got a fair number of 30's. So I was wondering; is there anyone interested in running Goon only runs of end game content? Some of the pubbie efforts can be hilariously bad. We're talking "forget to bring ranged units when the aerial bombers show up" levels of bad.

Not sure if the interest is there but I figured i'd throw that idea out there. That way if there's interest in coordinating times/whatever to run content together it'd help to get all that started.

If nothing else it'd help for dealing with raids when they come out. Ditto for getting troops and end game gear, since goons are far less likely to just grab poo poo they don't need and leg it like pubbies are.

Does anyone have any tips for PvP? While I haven't tried it yet on the Spellsword, the Elementalist was a poo poo show. The ranged magic was hard to aim and as soon as someone made it into melee range (not hard) they could keep me near perma-knocked down.
