I can't believe you fixed horseshoe theory! Bobby Deluxe posted:What makes me angry enough to be awake before 11am is that he's a very intelligent guy (probably moreso than me in most areas), and he's still been swayed by the Libs plastering dodgy bar charts everywhere. Christ knows what the rest of town is thinking. I'm not angry at him, I'm angry at the loving Libs. This probably won't make you feel better, but I'm coming to understand that being very intelligent doesn't mean you have an unlimited attention span; even if you have the ability to think about things critically, you still have to choose to do that. I was talking to my sister last week, and while she's someone I think of as smart and switched on, her take on GE 2019 is "they're all as bad as each other" because she'd uncritically swallowed the "Corbyn is an antisemite" line from the news. The bright spot in this is she identified it as a story from last year, so I'm choosing to believe she just hasn't been paying attention lately (tbf she does have a new baby). She also seemed open to my suggestion that the ownership of the papers might have been a factor in that story, and couldn't actually identify any specific example of antisemitism when asked. I doubt I've convinced her to vote Labour this time, but at least I can't see her going CON or LD. Anyway this was a long post to say, keep trying! Even if you can't shift him in time for this election, it's still worth it!

Second of all I feel ya, it's nerve-wracking as we are now 96 hours away from socialism or barbarism. I've painted my spiked road warrior armour People's Red so I'm ready for either outcome.

Iirc there's a fairly clear east/west=left/right divide, though any current brisgoons feel free to correct me on this, I've not lived there in years.

Can't remember who it was said it (a goon?), but "a person's politics is how they'd treat you if they didn't know you", which imo makes it one of the best reasons to sever if their politics are poo poo.

I've got 36 hours of work between now and polls closing and all I want to do is sleep through it (with a short break to cast my lot for Labour). Weather looks poo poo too. It's not icy but only because the of the rain bringing the temperature up. Please urge every lazy bastard you know to get out and get wet for a Labour majority! Gonna refer this tweet to the Ash Sarkar piece about NRS class analysis linked upthread. Tl;dr: it's a worthless classification system in 2019 because it doesn't actually break along class lines the way it thinks it does. All polls are useless but this one is doubly so.

To be completely fair, he's likely to get it; it's been tory policy for a while to punt more funds towards blue seats while starving red seats.

gh0stpinballa posted:we also need to neutralise this ghoulish argument about labour "culturally alienating" their traditional base. what blairites and guardian dickheads mean by that is "you need to name a number wrt how many migrants and minorities you're willing to throw to the lions". there is no escaping that labour lost a lot of votes because they refused to pretend white british people were more equal than other kinds of british people. and i feel like a soft brexit option might have been an opportunity to blunt this frothing insanity; now when the tory brexit doesn't pay dividends and people start suffering, they'll want their daddy tories to make sure mr tosca or mrs patel up the street are suffering twice as much so it still feels worth it. grim times ahead. The people want a Socialism that's more National, you say? But yeah I agree we need to get around that one and quickly. We're not a loving nazi party and trying to be one will just see us flop uselessly back to printing mugs that say CONTROLS ON IMMIGRATION while the tories run even further to the right. I don't know what the solution is, but it's not pandering to white racism.

One potential lesson from this election is that if the right wing is sliding into fascism we really need to answer the same fears they're creating and pretending to solve. Telling people "oh you don't need to worry about that, you misinformed idiot" hasn't worked. Even providing actual solutions through leftism alone hasn't worked, because it's too far removed from what people think is possible and plausible. We can adopt some of the language and rhetoric of our opponents, but ensure there's actual good policy underpinning it. This is triangulation and it'll be dumb in 2024 for the same reason it's dumb now: if a block of voters are attracted to fascism, you can't capture them off the fascists by making fascist noises, because it's obvious that you're presenting a watered down version of what they actually want. Also anecdotal but if Labour did pivot into Britain First National Socialism I wouldn't vote for them.
