Eh, not necessarily communist, but IN MY UTOPIA (aka a version of america that doesn't poo poo all over its non-ultra-wealthy people): - Homeland Security, ICE, and any other post-9/11 gestapos are disbanded and its staff members reintegrated into society in whatever way makes the most sense. Like, for real, we know they're a bunch of worthless loving nazis, but the goal is to actually be better than them. I'd say the FBI and CIA and NSA too, but like, I post unintelligible garbage for insane people, so, whatever. - Housing, healthcare, food, water, electricity, (public) transportation, (public) education, community policing/law enforcement, social media, and internet are all nationalized at the federal level and centrally planned. - Centrally managed resources have greater regulatory focus on conservation (e.g. gently caress your golf courses and lawns in Phoenix) but still aim to provide as much coverage as possible (e.g. Phoenix and remote rural areas are still supported). - Every citizen is covered for basic housing once they reach adulthood, i.e. 18 years of age. - Every citizen is covered for all healthcare and is expected to get at least a yearly checkup at their convenience (for the sake of trying to catch things before they get extra lovely) but isn't required; citizens who fail to show up will, however, have their immediate family and social media connections notified with a reeeal annoying "FRIENDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS YOU PROBABLY CARE ABOUT WHO HAVEN'T BEEN TO THE DOCTOR IN 1, 2, OR 3+ YEARS" email list every month. - Food distribution works on a general "trust" system in that all the data we currently give up for free is now used to track buying habits in order to best distribute food, and people can eat all they fuckin want to/buy all the groceries they want to, with abnormal usage being investigated in some non-intrusive way based on overall community per-capita consumption. - Homes are required to carry some kind communal (potable) water distribution system, be it delivery via larger water bottles or some kind of shared well-feed, whatever makes the most sense for a given area. - Water usage is treated the same as food ("trust" tracking usage for distribution/gauging consumption) with abnormal usage investigated and potentially rationed based on some set of regulations (e.g. the lawn/golfcourse-in-desert example). - Same for power, cause gently caress it, it's late and I wanna post. - Intellectual property law is reformed to a state similar where patents will fall to the public domain again after 10-20 years or something, so that people *ACTUALLY* have to loving innovate, not be capitalistic pigs wallowing in poo poo dropped by people decades ago. - Private companies that produce/sell non-centrally-managed resources/services still exist, because capitalism on products that AREN'T required for quality of life is fine by me. I dunno about you, but I fuckin love video games and movies and restaurants. Private companies are billed for their consumption of managed resources in a manner similar to today, so that's how restaurants and stuff work, including added taxes for roadways and other commons-resources. - Every citizen is given a stipend of $X/week to spend on whatever bullshit they want, since all their essentials are covered. - Private *architecture* is still a thing, though the land is issued by the managed housing authority. - Citizens who work at *any* government role get an addition Y% added to their weekly stipend, in addition to whatever their role pays. - Citizens who work *at all* or run any company get an additional Z% added to their weekly stipend, in addition to whatever their work/company pays. - Citizens are given an additional allocation of $A/year for business ventures, which they can technically spend on whatever the gently caress they want. This is to promote actual innovation and creative thinking for those who want to pursue those things while also giving people even more money to inject into the private economy. - Overall goal is to basically get everyone with essentials covered but also incentives for people to not strictly sit at home and drink themselves to death, with some kind of magical non-corrupted leadership and some kind of magically actually-civic-minded population that propagates the sheer will to keep things working over generations so people actually work to make the world a better place. - man gently caress this cause no one gives a poo poo anyway, whatever, make me emperor godking for life, that is my fuckin communist utopia also, trains, with bigass sleeper beds, and bar cars

i genuinely don't know what the ideal socialist government would look like. there are principles i believe in -- worker ownership of the means of production, a comprehensive social safety net, democratically elected leadership -- but trying to predict specific future developments is like trying to predict technological advances. we just don't have the context to know. that said, my personal vision of utopia would include: - it would be possible for anyone who wants to, to commit their lives to creating art without any trace of profit motive - the complete death of advertising/marketing as a medium - drastic scaling back of intellectual property apart from attribution rights they're relatively minor issues compared to more immediate goals like preventing unnecessary human suffering and death but these are basically the things that would matter to me if we didn't live in a broken hell world.

Hello utopia thread, I will volunteer to be the Debbie Downer itt because I don't believe utopia is possible. It may comfort you to know that I barely know what I'm talking about. Psychopathy and narcissism are poorly-understood mental problems rather than economic phenomena, and people like that will never stop trying to weasel into administrative processes and become self-interested and totally unaccountable rent seekers, which is part of what went wrong in the Soviet Union. They got rid of capitalism, but the kind of people who become capitalists turned out to be a very difficult problem! They tried killing and jailing a lot of people but it only sort of worked, and of course the smartest creeps were among those doing the executions. The resulting fear made Russians so cynical about Communism that they still haven't done a civil war to reinstate it. It was said in the other thread that there wouldn't be Nazis under communism. I believe this is true of the steifelnazis who follow the gamer pipeline through Pepe cartoons, because their lives under late capitalism are dog poo poo and they've been given the wrong answers by agents provocateur on the far right. But it is not true of the krawattennazis who compose those lies and are basically cult leaders. While you should be suspicious of people who say things like "stasserite ableist" on Twitter, it is sadly true that some of the fash are beyond hope. In some ways it is even worse than the scolds will tell you: even if fascism is somehow destroyed forever, these people will only turn to other self-interested cultist schemes for as long as their underlying psychological problems exist. (To say nothing of apolitical violence.) For this reason, prison and police abolition are probably beyond hope as well. That brings us to the good news: none of this necessitates our popular bullshit delusions that markets are as accountable as democratic popular control, or that ownership of a factory or apartment block is as critical to liberty as ownership of your clothes and toothbrush. These ideas belong in the toxic waste dump of history, and putting them there next to the Divine Right of Kings is achievable. More people are learning from first-hand experience with our stupid, stupid, stupid system that a "market actor" with ownership of what you need to survive has nothing to do with public choice theory. You are terrified of deprivation, so they will never willingly offer anything tolerable. We have concise terms for this: "dictatorship", "feudalism", "mafia protection racket", "slave-driving devil cracker", and so on. We also know from attempted liberal compromises (FDR et al) that aligning the stock market with the public interest is not stable in the long term. There will always be money in elaborate, stupid financial games that don't raise wages, lower prices or improve goods. And those who win those games will have lots of resources to lobby to keep them legal, while the people who actually make stuff don't even collect dividends, let alone the margins on those trades. Dividends belong to workers and industrial policy should be set by voters, instead of absentee gamblers owning everything. So not that different from the way it is now, just with more co-ops and no rent-seeking. I know it's not very exciting.
