And it was, but man, by the end I felt like I had been put through the loving ringer. Same with Saturday Night Fever, which is legit a great movie, but it is NOT a dance movie/musical at ALL. I had only heard the soundtrack when my roommate and I watched it a few years ago. He said the look of confusion and growing horror on my face was almost as good at the movie itself.

The original Mass Effect and Dead Space trilogies for reminding me that nothing good ever lasts. Until Dawn for being the catalyst that saw my stepdaughter and I begin the journey from stepdaughter/stepdad into daughter/father. Civilization V for being my happy place for over 1000+ hours since its release. Days Gone for proving that a video game doesn't have to be perfect or critically acclaimed to be enjoyable. Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 2 HD for giving my wife a chance to bitch about continuity in her favorite media franchise. Spider-Man for coming out of freakin' nowhere to be the best comic book video game since Arkham City. The Last of Us for proving that a video game can make someone cry. But the best game of the 2010's for me? Horizon Zero Dawn because of the backstory, the huge plot twist, and most importantly, gently caress Ted Faro. Oh, and huge metal dinosaurs. Scene: CobiWann and his wife are leaving the movie theater after a Sunday night showing of "Black Christmas." Cobi: ... Wife: ... Cobi: ... Wife: ... Cobi: ... Wife ...don't... Cobi: DEAR SWEET BUDDHA THAT MOVIE WAS loving AWFUL! I get the message they're trying to send, but they surrounded it with a horrible film that has little to do with Christmas, let alone either the original Black Christmas or the 2006 remake. Cliche situations, predictable writing, death by being off-screen, the utter lack of blood, a "twist" and explanation that would have made JJ Abrams' head explode, and a "girl power" ending that saw me turn to my wife and say, "did that sorority just commit mass murder?" Avoid. Avoid like the plague. To quote one of my wife's students, "I saw this movie for free and I want my money back."

Even the cheesiest horror movie have SOMETHING redeemable or worthwhile, even if it's something you can point at and laugh. It's incredibly rare I've felt like I wasted my time and energy going to the movies with my wife. Even when we disagree (Get Out is an all-time suspense classic to me, she thought it was average, she loved the Tom Cruise Mummy while I hated it from the very first line), we end up with an inside joke or something we can needle each other with. This one? Nothing. We couldn't even make fun of it. The only other movie we both felt ripped off about seeing was mother! That movie made us immediately go back to the box office and buy a ticket for Wind River...

Jerusalem posted:I loved Knives Out, it think it was superb. But man, nothing beat Parasite for me, what an amazing movie. I always liked the director before but this time he just fired on all cylinders, even the misstep I thought he might be taking on the ending turned out to be a wonderful misdirection (the son seemingly solving everything only to reveal it was yet another "plan" all in his head, like his father warned him was just a way of making an excuse for never actually doing anything). I'm going with Knives Out because, to borrow from you, the director was firing on all cylinders, the cast was acting their asses off (the hallway scene with Michael Shannon gave me loving chills), I was caught off guard when (they revealed the killer 1/3rd of the way through the movie and I was wondering how the hell they were going to move on from there)... ...but the kicker to me was the sheer joy I felt when my daughter turned to me during the credits and said "I couldn't figure it out! I had no idea what was going to happen!"

Jerusalem posted:It's a Rogue-lite where you play Zagreus, son of Hades, trying to escape Tartarus. Every time you die you start right back at the beginning and the entire hellscape rearranges itself and you lose all the blessings you gained on your last run. But you can also permanently level yourself up, improve your equipment and weapons, learn patterns and abilities etc and each time you play through you get to talk to more people, learn more backstory, uncover secrets and use them to your advantage to speed things up. Each run you can find random messages from the Gods of Olympus (or something else) that gain you blessings that help you survive and fight further etc. Wait, the protagonist’s name is Zagreus? The guy who sits inside your head?

I'm doing a deep dive relisten of all of Rush's studio and live albums. My God, the talent these three had together, the way they changed their sound over the years, the fact that it never felt like they were putting an album out due to contractual obligations or just for the money...and the nostalgia. That's what's hitting me the most - driving around in the early/mid 90's delivering pizza and bouncing back and forth between grunge and Rush. Growing up loving sucks.

It's pretty standard if above-average found footage but has some really great ideas with impossible space Holy poo poo, Grave Encounters. I started watching this movie on Showtime in the middle of the afternoon and was getting into it - the concept of eldritch spaces and "ghost hunters" getting screwed with intrigued me. My wife came down about halfway through and asked to watch it from the beginning. We didn't have time since we were running out in an hour to meet friends, so I set it up to tape off Showtime West and headed out. We came back and watched it around 1 AM. The difference between watching it in broad daylight and in a dark basement during the witching hour...it hosed me up HARD, especially the scene with the hands. Anyway, movies I love? House of Wax - the 2005 remake, the practical effects are great and it's got a mean streak that doesn't slide into torture porn. Head of State - Chris Rock does politics and Bernie Mac (RIP) as his VP. Looker - if anyone remembers this 1981 Michael Crichton with Albert Finney, Susan Dey, James Coburn, 3D body scanning, a knock on commercialization, and a gun that gives you amnesia, I'll be drat impressed.
