Edit: The game is released as of Christmas, 2021! I wrote a long post here describing the game and why should you play it: https://old.reddit.com/r/4Xgaming/comments/ro17o0/remnants_of_the_precursors_is_officially_released/ Here's an example of some of the new Klackon artwork: RayFowler fucked around with this message at 21:02 on Jan 5, 2022 |

RayFowler posted:But it's a good time now to let everyone know that the next alpha, Alpha 5, will be made publicly available on December 25th. This will be the last Alpha release before the game is feature-complete and we go into a beta. I'll download it, OP.

Played a few hours. Playing as the humans, it feels like and plays exactly like MOO 1, but slightly prettier. Nice job.

Beta 2 has been out since Christmas and I've spent the past few weeks adding a ton of player-requested enhancements and features as I prepare to finalize the game's text and send it to the translators. If you haven't played ROTP at all or at least not in a while, version 2.15 is probably a really good place to jump back in. The amount of changes made since the Beta release on Christmas is too long to type out in a post... you can read the most recent patch notes if you want that level of detail: https://old.reddit.com/r/rotp/comments/lt9hk2/beta_215_is_out_diplomacy_is_done/ The game is still free and rapidly approaching completion. It's a really addictive space 4X game, so be forewarned! Thanks and let me know what you think. You can download the game here: https://rayfowler.itch.io/remnants-of-the-precursors

Have you made any changes at all to AI's advantages? I understand you're not tinkering with the rules and I respect that but I remember playing MoO and watching computers colonize early systems that I knew for a fact were outside their ship range / colonization techs. Pet peeve. Or I'm a dork and misread their capabilities lol

At easier or harder levels of difficulty, the AI gains a production bonus or penalty. But at the default level, there is no cheating.

Bloodly posted:Related but not: I thought Java was unsafe to use or something. Was this just hearsay? Java applets were unsafe because they ran in your browser, which is connected to the internet. Same thing for Flash. Java and Flash applets have not been supported by browsers for years. Rotp is not a browser applet, but a standalone application, which means you download it once and it runs on your PC just like any other application. What makes it particularly safe compared to other applications or games is that it makes zero connections to the internet, so there's absolutely no way for anything on the internet to access or exploit it. For example, anytime you are running a Steam game you are connecting your PC to external servers to do things like log in, update your game, and whatever else the game wants to do in the background. All of those actions are inherently unsafe because your games are accepting requests from external servers (i.e. from Steam or the game's servers) and if those are compromised then your PC is technically at risk. This is literally how viruses spread to your PC; by you unintentionally running an application that connects to compromised servers. I worked for years at an internet security firm which is why I made RotP is a pure standalone application. You can download it, lose your internet connection, and it will play just fine.

No, but there are plans for a boxed set (manual, tech poster, etc) and a sourcebook (art/lore) being created as part of crowdfunding campaigns down the road for people who still like physical representations of their games. Lots of people have expressed interest in them. I'm literally making them for myself but I obviously will make them for anyone else who wants them.

I was never into MOO, but a lot of people were and I'm surprised this thread doesn't get more traction. Maybe you should try making a new thread that mentions Master of Orion in the title and has an actual icon. I bet plenty of people are interested but have just missed this thread.

ROTP has turned out to be a far better game than I ever thought I was capable of making. I can't twist people's arms if they're not interested! It's free. It's really good. That's about all I can do at this point. I feel like I would be subverting forum rules if I created an additional thread to talk about it.

Adding "Master of Orion" to the thread title seems like a good idea. I know the Let's Play of the original Master of Orion a few years back had a lot of goons commenting, so there's presumably an audience here for it.

FWIW I've been showing this game off to folks with the statement that it's "Free, current-gen MoO with actual QOL features and no other changes" and that gets people's attention real fast, so I think adding MoO to the thread title might be the right call as well.

Travic posted:I've played 2 and 3, but I've never played the original. I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for the hard work. MOO2 is an iconic title, but a lot of people will fight over the principle that MOO1 > MOO2. The key is that they are fundamentally different games at a strategic level, even though they share a title and setting. MOO2's strategic model was clearly inspired by Master of Magic, not MOO1. Even though I think MOO1 is a better design, I will be the first to admit that MOO2 was a far more influential title in the genre. My theory on that is because MOO3 was so poorly received that MOO2 was the standard-bearer for space 4X games for a full 15 years. Here's a video from the Explorminate website about the "Top 10 4X Games of All-Time". Even if we may disagree on rankings, they provide support for each one of the games which is why it is such a good video. They put MOO2 at #10 and MOO1 at #2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v35a8HjUnlM RayFowler fucked around with this message at 19:04 on Mar 10, 2021 |

Thanks for doing this. It is one of my favorite games of all times. And you should really mention that it is related to Master of Orion in the title as other people have suggested.,
