what are the good brands these days? is buffalo still one of htem?

i think buffalo and linksys are supposed to be okay

i'd go for one of the mvebu devices that support openwrt if i needed a real router- these days i use what's supposed to be a travel router because it uses so little power and the coverage in my place is still great https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-ar750/ (though i'd get the 's' if i were buying today)

will 802.11ax get better penetration than 802.11ac? i don't really see how it could b/c it's still 2.4/5ghz but maybe the increased speeds mean that lovely coverage and massive packet loss will still be functional? or maybe it has a unicorn in it idk

if it goes through my apartment's walls better ill upgrade is what im saying

if you've got a bunch of other networks around you raising the noise floor then it'll help with throughput but it won't really fix your other problems. Start nailing ethernet to your baseboards or invest in Power over Ethernet.

that all depends

it mostly works fine if you have modern wiring and the things you want to connect to each other are on the same circuit, and if not, go gently caress yourself

e: speeds are broadly comparable to wifi, again, depending on the gear and your wiring, and if you have any old rear end noisy equipment on the circuit

half the wiring in our house dates from the 1950s.

before the rennos it was a bit poo poo so naturally I thought redundancy in case it was still poo poo when we built the extension and got 2014 wiring.

the redundancy is cat6.

turns out eop works fine

I mean it’s not the best thing since mint sauce or anything but it works fine.

fine.
