Good riddance to the incredibly poo poo decade the 2010s, hello the very likely worse decade the 2020s.

Does anyone else have a thing where MikeCrotch’s posts are flagged as ignored, though I never actually ignored him, and when I go into his profile the button asks me to add him to my ignore list. Even though he presumably is already on it?

Dizzy is the bastard child of that selection. Seriously, loving Dizzy? I guess it was felt that it wouldn’t be appropriate, but it’s pretty weird that GTA wouldn’t be on there, considering that it’s British and one of the biggest game franchises of all time.

A few years ago when I was a freelance (i.e. unemployed) online copywriter, I got a call from a recruitment agency - I didn’t apply for the job, they got my CV from LinkedIn or something - about a job as an SEO manager. I tell the woman that of course I know all about SEO, but just to be clear, I’ve never worked in a specifically SEO-focused role. She says that’s totally fine, they have a new, broader idea of what an SEO manager can be, that I would be perfect for the position, and books me an interview. I drag myself into central London to the office of this company. The interview goes well, but I again make it clear to the guy that I’ve never worked directly on SEO. It’s no problem, he says, they envision the role as a wider editorial position, with just an eye on SEO from a content marketing viewpoint. I say great. A few days later I get a call from the recruitment agency telling me that I didn’t get the job because I didn’t have enough SEO experience.

Yeah, to be honest I think Keir Starmer wouldn’t necessarily be a bad leader, easily the best of the centrists, we could do much worse. But I think the main disqualifying factors are that he’s a remainey Londoner rather than any other actual political positions he holds.

Junior G-man posted:https://twitter.com/YouGov/status/1217041173266804736?s=20 This is kind of a jokey survey but I genuinely think it illustrates a big problem with UK society. It’s like an entire country is in clinical depression. Someone asks if, in the best possible circumstances, you would want to go to the Moon, and huge swathes of the population say “nah, it’ll be poo poo, innit”. No wonder we’re voting for the Tories and Brexit when people cannot even imagine things being good.

crispix posted:After 4 years of hearing nothing but Brexit, 12 days until the country ceases to be a member of the EU and there is not one mention of it on BBC News website on the main page or the UK page. You have to go to the politics bit (which usually just has Westminster minutiae and gossip for people who fancy themselves political anorak nerdlingers) to see anything about it. More important stories (aside from obviously very important Harry and Megan news) include a story about an Elephant Man statue. I honestly would not have believed how unfathomably silly this country is without witnessing the events of the last couple of years :/ My theory is that the press will act in lock-step with the Tory party and simply stop mentioning Brexit after the end of the month, to solidify the perception that Brexit is Now Done. Obviously it isn’t done but as we approach the end of the year the papers will fastidiously ignore the issue even as the trade talks get more fraught. I think there’s a decent chance that they will go for a basic customs union agreement at the last minute as that’s the only kind of deal they could possibly get in the time frame, and the press will go to great lengths to downplay it. Brexit is not a political project; it is a psychological one. It’s about telling all those woke liberals, metropolitan elites, young people and non-white people to gently caress off and it’s our country not theirs and it doesn’t matter how much you whine about facts and morals we’re doing this thing whether you like it or not. And the Tories and their vassals the press would like the constituency who believe that to think it has been completely achieved on Jan 31. After that they will do everything they can to pretend that Brexit is over. Comrade Fakename fucked around with this message at 14:20 on Jan 19, 2020 |

My favourite thing about CineD Star Wars discourse was that they spent years convincing themselves that actually the prequels were good because despite what many say, they are totally in keeping with the tone of the OT and full of references to those films. And then when The Force Awakens came out and nerds liked it, they argued that that film was bad because it was totally in keeping with the tone of the OT and full of references to those films. My opinion of Hbomberguy dropped a good chunk when I found out he'd been taken in by that bollocks.

CGI Stardust posted:Reports of Momentum's influence (also its unity and its radicalism) at the moment seem somewhat exaggerated. Currently the big Momentum push is... phone-banking for RLB!! It hasn't really coordinated anything other than that so far, or if it has then it hasn't shared any details with its members. The Starmer campaign has managed more influencing-the-influencers from what little I've seen reported. We’re largely focusing on the CLP nomination meetings right now, though as you say phonebanking is also ongoing (and very important btw). We’re ramping up with rallies in the next week or two and mycampaignmap.com should start having RLB events next week as well. Things are getting going.
