What is this game?

It's a sequel to Pokemon Ranger, a Pokemon Ranger spinoff game that exists to promote the DS. That game is known for having innovative gameplay, lack of random encounters, being the only source of Manaphy (and Phione), and being hard as gently caress. This game has most of those qualities.

What's the difference between those games?

The capture system has a huge change; we no longer have to do all the loops in one go. This makes the game much easier. Poke Assists have been revamped to accommodate this new gameplay.

Another difference is that this game has three times as many Pokemon to transfer to the mainline's games. Or zero, depending on how you look at it.

Do I have to play the first game?

I'm not kidding when I say that game is hard as gently caress, especially toward the lategame. Many people bounce off it due to the difficulty. I still recommend playing it, though. Or at least read my LP of it.

But to answer the question: no, you don't have to. There's a few reference toward the first game, but the plot here is entirely self contained.

This is a Pokemon game, so will you catch them all?

Just like before, I'll capture all Pokemon available in the game.

Can we talk about spoilers?

Spoilers for this game and the sequel should be tagged. Spoilers from the first game and anything else related to Pokemon don't need any tags, though.

No letter or introduction this time; we're automatically thrown into the gender select screen.

Based on the result in the voting from the last thread, we'll be playing as a boy.

New Music: Wild Pokemon Capture

We're also then thrown into a capture. If you came here after Ranger 1, you'll notice that there's now a bar under the Pokemon that fills up after every loop instead of a number above it.

There's now also the Pokemon list on the top screen, but otherwise everything remains the same. The Pokemon signals an attack...

...and then the Pokemon attacks. Some Pokemon have multiple possible attacks, so we have to anticipate all possibilities.

Having a Pokemon run into our line breaks it while having an attack run into our line deals damage in addition to breaking it. If our Styler's energy (the bar below) drops to 0, it's Game Over.

If you're wondering, we can't get a Game Over on this capture. Pikachu will stop attacking when we got to 4 HP.

A Pokemon is captured when its gauge is full. The game refers to Pokemon's gauges as "Friendship" and our health as "Energy", but I'll mostly be using "HP" for both.

Okay, good going. That's pretty impressive.

New Music: Ranger School Scare

As you might've guessed, the person (or Pokemon) talking will have a green border around them.

My name, it is Kaplan. You are now a member of our secret army. You are now a member of our secret army, the inscrutable Team School. As proof of your membership, you are conferred the School Styler you just used. Together, we shall rule the world...
Oh, please, Mr. Kaplan!

performance like that.

A questionable design choice not imported from last game is that the name of the person speaking takes a line in the text box for itself.

That in addition to the smaller boxes (this game only having 2 lines instead of the previous one's 3) makes some texts cut off awkwardly like this.

New Music: Ranger School Field
Ahahaha, sorry, sorry. The timing was just too perfect to miss. Ahem... Congratulations! You have passed the Ranger School's entrance exam with flying colors! That really was quite an impressive capture.

I was worried the game will start off like Uranium there :sweatdrop:

Congratulations! You've been accepted. Starting today, you are officially a student of the Ranger School. I'm Ms. April. I'm your class's teacher. I'm pleased to meet you. Your classmates are waiting for you. I'll show you to our class.

*April and ??? leave*

Enjoy your school life!

We take a short trek from the capture building into the main building...

...as the camera pans up into the school bell before the screen turns into...

New Music: Introduction

...our Title Screen. We get it much faster than the first game, but don't be fooled. By the time we get our first real mission, you'd be glad that Circe managed to skip this part in her journey.

New Music: Ranger School

Oh well. For now, let's just enjoy our time at Tutorial School.

And good morning, everyone!
Good morning!

There's one more student offscreen on each side.

As I mentioned yesterday, we have a new member for our class.
Is it a guy? Or a girl? Which is it?
Is the new student cute? Cool? Or look like a celebrity?
Okay, that's enough! You can see for yourself. Here's our latest classmate! Come on in!

Our new friend came alone to our Almia region to become a Pokemon Ranger.
*To ???* Oh, yes. You should introduce yourself to our class rather than me. Let's start with your name.

We'll be going with the default boy name for this LP (for those curious, the default girl name is Kate).

This is done to follow the anime canon (Kellyn actually appears in the movie, unlike Circe/Solana). And the Pokemon Uranium canon.

Okay, our new friend is named Kellyn. Let's make him feel welcome. I understand that he scored quite well on our entrance exam. ...What is it, Keith? Why the big grin?
*To Kellyn* Anyway, we'd better get you seated somewhere, Kellyn. You can have the seat next to Keith.

*Kellyn sits down*

Okay, that will do. That's it for treating you like a new transfer student. From now on, you're all my students, people whom I can take pride in teaching. Let's do it, everyone... Let's not fail your dreams of becoming Rangers, Operators, and Mechanics!

Here we see the rare moment of a Pokemon protagonist actually speaking.

Okay, I'll change the class schedule specially for today. This will be a free-study class. But before I go, Kellyn, I need to explain something to you. It's about the School Styler you were provided before the entrance exam. It's a simplified version of a Ranger's official Capture Styler. Now, to put simply, a Styler is a device used for befriending and capturing Pokemon. By drawing loops around Pokemon, it conveys the Ranger's feelings of friendship to the Pokemon. When the Ranger's friendship is fully conveyed, the Pokemon is captured.
*To other students* Everyone, you should all be paying attention to this as a review.
*To Kellyn* Touch the button at the bottom right of the Touch Screen to open the menu.

The upper screen shows your status and your Styler level. On the lower screen, the Styler menu is displayed. The Styler menu has many convenient features that you can access. You should try them out and see for yourself.

Half of these menus are completely useless for us right now, but we'll go through the rest later.

Oh, please, Keith. Don't yawn with your mouth wide open like that.

To be fair, I imagine this is most returning players' reactions too.

Next, the button at the bottom left of the Touch Screen. That's the Change Screen button for switching what's shown on the top screen.

You can switch between the Map-Mode and the Friend Pokemon Mode. They're both convenient, so you should set the mode to whichever one you use most.

Since the map is actually useful this time, I will be sticking mostly with that.

Oh, yes. There's something quite important. As a student of the Ranger School, you may have up to three Pokemon with you. If you capture a fourth Pokemon, you'll have to release one of them. By release, I mean you'll have to let it go. It's good-bye to that Pokemon.

There's no way to keep all Pokemon we captured in this series; we will have to constantly rotate Pokemon according to the situation. Partner Pokemon are the exception to this rule, but students can't have them :smith:

If there's anything you don't understand, look it up in your Glossary. Actually, that turned into quite a lesson. Are you a little overwhelmed? Really, you should just try things out and see how they work for yourself. After all, nothing beats experience. It's all about trying.
*To the blond girl* Rhythmi, can I get you to show Kellyn around the School, please?
I sure will!
I'll be in the Staff Room. I'll leave you to it. *leaves*

The students crowd around Kellyn as soon as April leaves. This game's spritework is amazing and it's a shame I won't be able to show off them all.

long did it take you to capture Pikachu? Like an hour?
Keith's just a show-off. You're better off ignoring him. Instead, you should be paying attention to me. All right, let me take you on a tour of the Ranger School. Let's begin with our own classroom. You've already met our teacher, Ms. April. She's really nice, but if you make her mad... Look out. There's another class next to us. The teacher there is Mr. Kincaid. He's very uptight and strict. "No running in the hallway!" is, like, his pet saying.

That machine keeps a record of all your achievements as a Ranger. Besides here, you can find Save Machines in towns and forests, too. If you spot one, you should check it out.

The save points are denoted on the map with the blue square with "S" on them. Unlike the mainline games, these Save Machines are the only way to save in this game. If we get a Game Over, we'll be sent to our last save file, so don't forget to use these Save Machines!

Okay! Let's move on. We'll explore the School building!

Sorry, Rhythmi, but we've already got another thing on our to-do list. In fact, we won't be exploring the school this update.

Instead, we're going to take a closer look at the menu. April has already told us the contents on the top screen, so we're going to take a look at the bottom screen.

...Not that there's much to look at. We're ways away from Missions and Quests, so those two are out. Without any friend Pokemon, Release is useless.

Quicksave is a way to let us save our game without a Save Machine, but it'll force us out of the game and it'll be deleted as soon as we load it. So if we get a Game Over, Quicksave won't "save" us :downsrim:

Options lets us edit the text boxes. I promise we're going to use that rainbow text box sometime later in this LP.

Browser is this game's version of regional Pokedex. We're going to fill them all by the end of this LP.

In the Ranger series, there's no breeding. This means some Pokemon will have their evolution family only partially included.

As we level up our Styler, we'll raise our Energy, Line (length), and Power (Friendship per loop). These aren't that important since it's much easier to Level Up in this game compared to Ranger 1.

Glossary are the datalogs of this game. It lists a bunch of things, but they're either redundant (considering this game's lengthy tutorial) or spoilery (albeit very minor).

Here are the entries we have unlocked so far. We'll unlock more as we progress through the game.

Of course, no Pokemon game is complete without NPC chat.

I think Keith sees you as a serious rival.
You should get to know the others, too. Don't be shy.
You came to the Almia region by yourself? That's impressive!
Our School's quite liberal and relaxed. You should check out our Library and the Staff Room.
Before your entrance exam, did Mr. Kaplan put on a goofy act?
You know, if a Top Ranger were to see me do a capture, they'd be in awe.

Shadows of Almia, oh boy. I love this game. It's an upgrade in a lot of ways to the original, some of which I didn't even remember until checking some of these screens.

Even outside of gameplay, the game immediately shows much more world-building around the Rangers, which is great. I genuinely have a lot of positive things to say about this game and I can't wait for the rest of the LP.

I know you denote that you're the one saying something by putting it in italics, but could you somehow specifically denote when what you're typing is the dialogue from someone unknown? I got a bit confused there. Would some kind of question mark image work without being too much effort?

Music: Ranger School

Some objects can be examined to reveal some flavor text. In this case, we can examine the boards on either side of the blackboard.

That's the only thing we can examine in our classroom, though, so let's see what else this school has to offer.

There's four rooms, with the two north exits being the stairs and the south exit being...well...the exit.

Let's start with the southeast room.

I'm taking our new classmate on a tour of the School. This is the other class. The man looking this way is Mr. Kincaid. He gets his hair to go that way with a ton of hair spray. He's a little too uptight, I think. I'm not a big fan.

Seems like they're in the middle of class right now. Let's talk to them! :buddy:

I think not!
Beware of Ms. April. She's got a temper!
The guy who sits on my right is studying in the Library. You can sit down if you'd like.
You must be the new student in the other class. There's one rule that I would like you to honor and uphold while you're in School. Don't run in the hallways. Oh, there is another rule: don't cast suspicion on others without proof. These two rules are truly important.
Ms. April's class is on a study break, I take it.

I'm starting to think that we've lucked out getting into April's class...

Anyway, next up is the northwest room.

Also known as Keith's nap room. That boy in the back with a haircut like a mushroom is Isaac. He's awesomely smart. You can usually find him right here in the Library. Sometimes, he goes off somewhere, though.

Upper rightmost bookshelves The shelves are lined with books on Operators and wireless communication.
Upper right bookshelves The shelves are lined with every book pertaining to Pokemon Rangers.
Upper left bookshelves The shelves are lined with books about the Capture Styler.
Upper leftmost bookshelves The shelves are lined with books donated by Altru Inc.
Middle bookshelf The shelves are lined with books on Almia's geography and history. The book "Almia's Forgotten Words" contains this entry. "Vatonage: The act of rekindling light that has been swallowed by darkness. It is an act of restoring harmony."
Lower bookshelf The shelves are lined with Pokemon field guides and research papers.

Do you guys think I'd make a good Ranger? I don't think I'm cut out for it. That's what I've been thinking. I'm Ponte. They call me the conflicted marshmallow boy.
I wish the bell would ring already.

:smith:

I was doing an eight-digit multiplication in my head when you interrupted me. I'll have to start calculating from the top. It's nothing, though. I'm Isaac. Both my IQ and my height, in centimeters, are 163. I'm studying to become a scientist. Mr. Kincaid gave me permission to study on my own and not attend class.

Why would an aspiring scientist enroll in a "Ranger" School? :raise:

You should get into reading, too.

That's not an answer! :argh:

Not so loud in the library, please.

...sorry :sweatdrop:

Let's go into the northeast room where we're allowed to make lots of noise.

Nevermind :eng99:

But usually, only our principal is here. Our principal is Mr. Lamont. His eyes are always twinkling happily behind his glasses. I like him pretty well.

I'm Lamont Splendidocious, the principal. My last name's far too long, so everyone calls me by my first name. I'm pleased to meet you.
Play a lot. Study a lot. And capture a lot. I hope you do all this to make your school life a fun and fulfilling one.
I'm working on the schedule for our next Outdoor Class.

Cabinets This rack is for storing spare School Stylers.
Southwest desk It's a book with the pages kept open. The book is "Drama for Beginners."
Southeast desk Is this someone's report card? It says, "Lacking in focus."
Northeast desk It's Ms. April's desk. There is a photo stand and a flower.
North desk It's Principal Lamont's desk. There's a book: "PC for Novices."
Northwest desk It's a half-written notice. "No running in the ha..."

I'm starting to worry about Kincaid's sanity :ohdear:

Our next destination is down the sta...

not allowed down there without permission.

Now I'm worried about Kincaid just in general :ohdear::ohdear:

This is where we all bunk down, coed style. Not in the same bedrooms, of course. The boys' bedroom is on the left (←). The girls' bedroom is on the right (→).

Thank you for telling us which direction left and right is. We never would have figured it out otherwise

Janice, the lady there, is our caretaker. She's like a mom to us all.

It's for recharging your Styler to full.

It's denoted on the map with a pink "P"...for some reason. We won't be seeing too many of these.

Oh, hello. Nice to meet you, dear. All the students think of me as the caretaker girl. No, no, that's a terrible lie! I'm the caretaker lady here.
Oh, it's about time I go feed the Bidoof.

Rhythmi won't let us go into our room, so let's go back down.

There goes the bell. We can go outside now.
*When talked to* I shouldn't say this too loudly, but... I think Keith sees you as a serious rival.

We can't go outside the school yet, but going outside this building is a start.

Music: Ranger School Field

That's where Mr. Kaplan will teach you about performing captures. Ms. Claire is also there. She teaches about clearing targets.

That's the building we started the game in.

You might've noticed the strange lines in the pictures. Well, they're caused by the emulator and they're minor enough for me to be :effort: about it.

At least nobody has a permanent haircut anymore, though :v:

That reminds me... Do you know about clearing targets?

Your expression tells me you don't know. Well, that's all right. That's why we have the Training Room.

There's nothing we can do here and Rhythmi won't let us explore other areas, so might as well go to the training building.

Can you give us special lessons, please?

The screens are showing the summary of the lectures this update.

Hehehe... Welcome to the inscrutable Team School's secret hideout.
Yes, yes, we've heard that before. Let's pay no attention to Mr. Kaplan and his make-believe conspiracy.

The funny thing here is that Team School ends up actually existing in a later game.

...What's that? It's "Team Skull", you say? Meh, close enough :colbert:

Oh! Please don't ignore me! I'll be serious and introduce myself. Um, my name's Mr. Kaplan. I teach the fundamentals of capture.
And I'm Ms. Claire. Glad to meet you. It's my job to teach you about performing Target Clears.
I know you had to do a capture for your entrance exam, but... I think you should learn about capturing properly once more. Mr. Kaplan, can you give Kellyn a lesson on capturing, please?
That's an admirable attitude. Okay, I'll give you a special lesson: the fundamentals of capture.

I'll skip over the lesson since I've already explained most of it last update. There's a few things I haven't mentioned, though.

First: Unlike Ranger 1, the Flee button will be available immediately. It allows us to Flee and has a guaranteed chance of working. It won't be available in mandatory battles (such as bosses), though.

Second: The Pokemon's HP will decrease if we some time passes without any loop on that Pokemon. It decreases at a constant rate. For now it's enough to undo all our hard work, but later on it'll be a mere inconvenience.

Third: The Pokemon will be automatically captured once the bar is full; no need to release the Stylus. This means that there won't be any situation where we have to start over because we release it too late, but this also means that we can't get bonus EXP from showing off.

Thank you, Mr. Kaplan! Next, you'll finally learn what we mean by "Target Clear"! Ms. Claire, please give Kellyn a lesson about performing a Target Clear.
Very well. This will be a special lesson. You'll learn about the basics of performing a Target Clear.

I'll be abridging this one too.

Most Pokemon has a Field Move. Every target/obstacle (that can be cleared) has a required Field Move to clear it. We can perform Target Clear if one of our Friend Pokemon fulfills the requirement (having the same Field Move type with at least the required power).

Thank you very much, Ms. Claire! Now you know all about captures and how to do a Target Clear! You're all set! Let's go back to the school yard. There's another place I want you to see.

These lectures unlock a lot more Glossary entries, which you can read here.

That's a lot of mechanics to go through, so we'll end this update here.

Next update, we'll see what very special date Janice is late for.

Help, someone, Anyone! Catch the Bidoof for me!

New Music: Trouble

Does 9 Bidoof counts as a very special date?

J-Janice?! She's having trouble with the Bidoof! Please, Kellyn! Capture the Bidoof and get them to settle down!
Heh, I was wondering what the ruckus was all about. Looks like a good time that's up for grabs!

You help with captures, too!
It won't be much fun if I just help. Hey, new kid! I forgot your name, but I challenge you! We'll have a capture race, you and me! We'll see who can capture the most Bidoof, all right?
Can't you make the effort to learn our classmate's name? You can be so annoying, Keith! Go ahead and have your silly race our whatever, but hurry up!
Okay, let's go on with it! Three! Two! One! Start!

In this series, talking stops time. Keith is supposed to be running around here.

when I accidentally stomped on one's tail. Well, that made the whole lot of them go into a frenzy, and off they went!
Quick! Capture the Bidoof! Here's your chance to put that Keith back in his place!
If you've got the time to chat, get on with capturing some Bidoof! You're not going to beat me, though!

Unfortunately, what Keith said is true; this race is rigged

Music: Wild Pokemon Capture

Anyway, let's talk about more game mechanics. We can initiate a capture by running into the Pokemon, in this case the Bidoof.

There's a 1.5 second loading time. It doesn't sound too bad, but it adds up. It's weird since the loading time in Ranger 1 is much shorter

Capturing Bidoof is very simple. It has no attack, only false alarms.

Music: Capture Complete

Base EXP: 10

Our first Browser entry! :toot:

The Group and Poke Assist information are completely useless to us right now. Keep in mind that Pokemon here can only have one type in this series, so usually dual-types Pokemon have one as its group and the other as its assist.

We can get extra EXP by fulfilling certain requirements. For example, in this capture we get:
  • Rapid Capture (+1)
  • One-Line Capture (+2)
  • No Damage 1 (+1)

This gives us a total EXP of 14. These bonus EXP are percentages relative to the base, so they too will get bigger as we capture Pokemon with higher base EXP.

After that, we're given a rank for the capture. The rank are based on the percentage of total EXP compared to the base. We need 150% to get S rank, so we're one short here.

These ranks are completely useless, but the highest rank we get for each Pokemon is displayed in their browser entry. The great part is that some Pokemon are encountered only once, so the rank for that capture is the rank that will stay for that save file permanently. I'm sure someone somewhere have done a run with S rank on every Pokemon.

"No Damage 2", the upgraded version of "No Damage 1", gives more EXP and is enough to push us over the S rank threshold on the next capture :toot:

"No Damage 2" is gained by not taking any damage in two captures in a row. There's also "No Damage 3" for the same requirement but with three captures in a row instead. We can only get one of these bonus chains, so the game will pick the one that gives the most bonus EXP (which is "No Damage 3", predictably).

This second capture also gives us our Level Up. It does exactly what you'd expect, but it also fully restores our HP :toot:

New Music: Mission Complete

Anyway, we then run around and capture as many Bidoof as we can.

Because this isn't an actual mission, we don't get the iconic "Mission Clear" jingle :(

I caught five! This means you caught... Uh...four. That means... Victory is mine!

You and Keith looked good at it, too! Of course, I also need to thank our new friend and Rhythmi, too.

Wait, so who else do you mean by "You and Keith"?

Thank you all for this. This is a big relief for me. And to the leader Bidoof...I'm so sorry. I really didn't mean to tread on your tail. I'll make it up to you with tastier treats than usual. Come along, everyone.

*Janice and the Bidoof leave*

I'd rate your captures around 65 out of 100. ...Hey, but you know... I'll be honest: I was pretty surprised by how you did. You might be decent for someone who just learned about this. You said your name was Kellyn, right?
Oh, you, Keith! You knew our friend's name all along! For goodness' sake... Oh! That's right! There's somewhere I haven't shown you yet!
What, you mean Ascension Square?
Yes!
Then I'll go, too.
Oh, all right. I guess we'll let you come with us. To get to Ascension Square, you go to the east (→) of the school yard. Then, you turn south (↓) to the stairs that go down to the Square.

I can understand using the arrows for the cardinal directions, at least.

But screw that! After all, there's now wild Pokemon to capture!

Taillow has a basic-rear end Gust. It's better than nothing, I guess.

Base EXP: 10

It'll be a while before we get out of the "10 base EXP" zone.

Wild Bidoof can now be found at this corner. In Ranger 1, running into a Pokemon will cause a nearby Pokemon to get caught up in the capture too. For example, running into a Bidoof here will get us into a capture with both Bidoof.

In the sequels, this doesn't apply; only the approached Pokemon will be in the capture. This prevents the trick where we can prematurely capture an inaccessible Pokemon by approaching an accessible Pokemon near it :(

Each species reacts differently upon spotting us. They can run away, do nothing, chase after us, or actively attack us. Since we're still in the tutorial, we won't see that last category.

Budew here (and Taillow earlier) is in the "run away" category, denoted by their "terrified" sweat marks.

Budew's attack is functionally similar to Taillow's but reskinned to fit Grass type better. The series does that a lot.

Base EXP: 10

Finally, there's Pichu a.k.a. Battery.

Pichu will have "!" during the warning for the first attack and "!!" for the second "attack" (it's pretty much impossible to get hit by it). It's nice that they decided to make different signals for some (not all) Pokemon like this, unlike in Ranger 1.

Base EXP: 10

Recharge restores our HP with higher Power restoring more HP. This applies for both the Poke Assist and the Field Move. At 1 power, it'll recharge 5 HP.

Since Electric assist is more widespread and Electrify is an actual Field move now, there's only 5 Pokemon with Recharge in the entire game; one of every power level.

That's our fourth Pokemon, and since we can only have three, we have to release one. A nice addition to this game is that we can choose to Recharge if we have the appropriate Pokemon instead of just releasing it.

I won't be showing every releases and levelups (we leveled up again which you can tell from the HP bar), so enjoy this screen while it lasts.

We COULD break these crates with the Bidoof, but there's no reason to.

Instead, we'll use our first Target Clear on this fence. We just have to drag a line from our Pokemon (in this case Taillow) to the fence...

And walla voilà! The fence is now broken, and we can now pass through. That Taillow is also automatically released, though :sadwave:

I'm sure you can guess this tree's true identity. We can't capture it now, but we'll be back.

Music: Ranger School Field

That's everything in the yard, so let's continue on with the tour.

Next month, there's going to be a special class here. It's the Outdoor Class. That monument there is called the Pledge Stone.

If you make a firm pledge to each other with your friends here, it will surely come true... That's what Principal Lamont told me. And there you have it! That concludes Rhythmi's School Tour of Wonder and Excitement! Kellyn! I'm glad to have met you! I hope we can be friends for a long time!
Hey, hold it now! Don't worry about Rhythmi. Be friends with me, okay?

*Bell rings*

Oh, there goes the bell. We'd better get back to class. But, boy, oh boy, Keith... Aren't you the slick one!

*They all leave*

While you can't get unaccessible mons early anymore by luring an accessible one nearby (which is the biggest shame of this game in general, being unable to engage multiple wild mons at the same time), I believe you can get this tree now without needing Soak, you just need to wait for it to be right below the ledge and drop right on top of it.

writes letters? I'm writing to my parents about you, actually. Huh? You already wrote to your little sister about today? Like how I beat you in our capture race?

That's a shame, because today's main event hasn't started yet. It'll start once we exit the room or talk to Keith, so let's talk to everyone else first.

The smartest person in the whole school is Isaac. The student who's been here the longest... That's me.
I have to look after the School's Pokemon this week. The early mornings are tough.
Our boy genius Isaac is never around at this time of night. I wonder where he's out studying.

Ponte is in the north just offscreen from the last picture.

Hey, Kellyn, you're not sleepy yet, are you? Come over here.

Everything's ready.

Obviously, we won't start in the boys room if we play as a girl, and Keith won't be the one bringing us out either.

In another timeline posted:

I'm thinking of writing to my mom and dad about you, Kate. Oh? You already wrote to your little sister about today. I hope your little sister replies!

Two non-grunt identical NPC have met each other! The world is going to be engulfed in darkness! :derp:

(Upper) I slept through class, so I'm wide awake now...
(Lower) It own't be lights-out for a while. Maybe I'll study up on my Pokemon.
You, Keith, and Rhythmi are so tight. It's as if you've been friends forever.
Say... Let's sneak our for a while.

*They both go out*

Thanks for waiting.
Yeah, kept us waiting, Rhythmi.

Okay, let's get started with our test of courage to welcome Kellyn.

:3:

We just want you to prove you're brave. I had to do it before, too. It's no big deal. But, you know, you do have that easily spooked look to you. No offense.
The rules are simple. The four of us have hidden our Stylers in four different places in the School. They are: Ms. April's class, Mr. Kincaid's class, the Staff Room, and the Library. Gather all four Stylers, then put them in front of the door to the basement room. It's not hard to or anything, but it's also not safe to go alone. That's why we've always had this one rule: the student seated next to the initiate has to go, too.
Gweh! You mean me...
Okay, you two. Off you go.

One more round of NPC talk before we go.

Hey, are you scared?
I took the test of courage when I enrolled. The classrooms were spooky at night.
Hihihi... Urrrrrrgh... ...I'm joking! Go on, you two.

I don't know what she was trying to do here.

Music: Ranger School Scare

Immediately after heading downstairs, there's a rustling noise. That's a great start.

This is also a great start :cawg:

Wah! Th-there's something there!

Oh, it's only a Bidoof... It just startled me. But, wow, that sure spooked me. You... You were spooked, too, right?

Nope :smugbert:

Let's visit the rooms in the same order as Rhythmi's tour, which means we'll start from our classroom.

Not shown: A fifth box to the right of Kellyn and Keith.

Even our own classroom's kind of creepy at night... Hey, I'll give you a hint, even. What wasn't here during daytime? That's what it is.

I was hoping for a hint as to WHICH of these crates have the Styler! :sigh:

Thankfully, it's not random; the Styler is always going to be in this box.

The other boxes has a Pichu (middle), a Budew (southwest), and more Bidoof (the rest).

Kellyn does a pose after every Styler, but it isn't worth making a gif of right now.

This is the classroom next to ours... Hurry up and find that Styler.

This one is a lot more straightforward. It's an introduction of Pokemon that chase us. And a reintroduction to how annoying Zubat can be.

Zubat will chase us if it spots us. And in this narrow corridor, it'll definitely catch us. That's 8 seconds wasted :argh: (yes, I counted).

At least it's not as worse as in Ranger 1 where they'll appear in groups and have a field attack that'll mess up our controls if it hits.

It's as if someone's lurking here... Get on with finding that Styler. I want to get going.

Crates block our way, so we have to destroy them. Otherwise, it's just a matter of finding Bidoof and using Target Clear with it.

There's another Bidoof right before the second pair of crates (barely visible in a picture above), so we don't have to go back out. This kind of convenience is what makes games more enjoyable.

I'm only showing this because Keith looks like he's standing on a table.

This is the Staff Room... And the hint for this room is... The Styler we hid here doesn't stay still. You understand, don't you?

Oh, I wish the Styler would just stay still.

Instead, we're forced to chase it around this room. This is our proper introduction to terrified Pokemon, and they can be a pain in the rear end to chase down.

By cutting corners, we eventually reach the Pichu, capture it, and obtain the final Styler. Yes, we have to capture it; fleeing won't get us the Styler.

Good, good. That's all of them, then. Let's take them down to the basement.

I never heard about a target like this. I wonder put it here?

Oh look, a fence. It's just like the one we cut last update. Taillow isn't here though.

But you know what's here? Zubat. Yaaay :geno:

Music: Wild Pokemon Capture

There's no status effects during capture, so Zubat's Supersonic is just a basic attack here.

There IS status effects on the field, though. We won't be seeing them anytime soon, but they're more prevalent in this game compared to the first.

Music: Capture Complete

Base EXP: 10

Cut, eh?

Music: Ranger School Scare

Zubat is officially more useful here than it has ever been in any other games.

*Pokemon cry*

Have you been hearing anything? Like weird noises?

If you played enough Pokemon, you'll know instantly what that noise is.

Video: 4 Gastly

back to the dorms, and we're done.

Music: Wild Pokemon Capture

Yep, we're going to capture all these Gastly at once. This is our introduction to multi-Pokemon captures. It looks daunting, but it's actually pretty easy.

The hard thing about multi captures is that each Pokemon will do its own thing, so it's very easy to have our line broken.

They only has this attack which I think is physically impossible to hit us.

Gastly can also teleport, which removes them from the field. That means we can't loop them, all while the countdown for their Friendship drain runs. So if we don't loop them quickly before and after they teleport, we'll lose all our progress on them.

On the flip side, teleporting Pokemon can't break our line. This makes looping the other Pokemon much easier. Gastly only needs 3 loops at our current level, so they can be captured very quickly.

Music: Capture Complete

Base EXP: 10

The EXP before bonuses is the total base EXP of all captured Pokemon. So in this capture we get 40 EXP before bonuses.

Oh, it was just Gastly...

New Music: Time to Flee
The basement is off-limits to everyone but myself!
Aww, shoot! Run for it!

New Music: Cave

Just a Zubat causing minor disturbance in the hallway. Incidentally... Was that experiment a success? Or was it a failure?
It's impossible to say yet. The control systems aren't complete. But, it's only a matter of adjustment now.
Isaac. I'm counting on you to succeed. ...Having said that, it is late. Let's call it a night on our research. Insufficient sleep should be avoided.
I'll return to my dorm, then. Good night, Mr. Kincaid!

*Isaac leaves*

Curious... :thunk:

What day is it today?

Oh, come on, we wouldn't forget about Outdoor Class!
Ms. April! Keith told me he thought up 38 questions to ask the Ranger.
Well, how enthusiastic! Okay, class, let's go outside. We'll gather in Ascension Square.

*Everyone except the trio leave*

I've waited so long for Outdoor Class! *leaves*
Did he really say "Yahoo"? ...Keith's too pumped up for this. You remember where Ascension Square is, don't you? You go to the east (→) of the school yard, then take the stairway at the south (↓). I'll see you there! *leaves*

We could follow Rhythmi's instructions. Or we could explore. What to do?

...

The Bidoof from the bravery test is still here, and it'll be available here for the rest of the game.

Pichu appeared in each side of the upper corridor. They're useless since we can just go upstairs to recharge.

in the Outdoor Class. There are much more important things. Such as obeying rules. Running in the hallways, sneaking into the basement... Such breaches of rules aren't to be tolerated.

Kincaid is still salty as hell we almost accidentally uncover his secret plot, whatever that is.

I'd read books that I'd started here. They have interesting books, like the history of Almia. Don't you find them interesting?
Oh, it's Outdoor Class today? Sorry, but I'm not attending. I need to look up something here.

Buncha nerds.

Outdoor Class, huh... What should I do? I don't know if I really, from the bottom of my heart, want to be a Ranger anymore.

:smith:

Looks like we're not going back there anytime soon.

It's held at Ascension Square. Go to the east (→) of the school yard, then take the stairs at the south (↓). I guess I'll set about hanging everyone's laundry under these blue skies.

Music: Ranger School Field

Going down on the west stairs from the courtyard, we reach the school gate. Aka the thing that stands between us and freedom... :negative:

But for now, all that's here is a tackleable tree. There's another tree to the left with a convenient Budew, but that one can't be tackled for some reason.

Tackling trees can (but not always) yield Pokemon. Some Pokemon can only be found this way, and the game doesn't tell you which trees have those unique Pokemon. At least it doesn't take 8 hours to try another tree.

This Slakoth isn't one of them, by the way.

Slakoth moves VERY slowly (as expected) and it's attack is just lazily raising its arm. It's somehow more dangerous than Bidoof or Gastly.

Base EXP: 10

Well, this rock we can't break right now marks the end of actual gameplay for this update.

What's keeping you? Outdoor Class is about to get started!

Sorry :sweatdrop:

I think the Ranger's here already.
Yeah! There's a gangly Ranger with a giant afro!

Let's get this Outdoor Class started. This is Crawford. he's a graduate of this Ranger School. And now he's a Pokemon ranger in Vientown.
I'm Crawford! Nice to meet you, everyone!

Kellyn might be the most talkative Pokemon protagonist.

...That actually explains his verboseness in Uranium :ms:

Only 4 Friend Pokemon? Circe can do much better than that :colbert:

Hi,, Crawford! It's been a long time! But that giant explosion of an afro... I think I liked your hairstyle the way it was before. It makes me nervous to see that kind of jumbled-up outgrowth of anything. ...But that's enough of that. We're all here, so let's begin! Let's get to Outdoor Class's main event: The Question-&-Answer Session of Terror! Let the questioning begin!
Crawford, why did you decide to become a Ranger?
Well, it's because I love Pokemon. I wanted to become friends with them. You know, to bond with them. Besides, it's a cool job!
That's the same way I feel! I'm glad I asked you!
I have a question! What kinds of Pokemon are difficult to capture?
Well, speaking only for myself... Psychic and Ghost-group Pokemon, yeah. They have this habit of going poof and disappearing during captures.
Ghost Pokemon do that?

Poor students in Kincaid's class never learning anything actually useful :eng99:

Personally, I think the hardest Pokemon to capture are ones that dart around the field, going offscreen a lot of the time. Those tend to be Flying or Bug type.

Me! I'm next! My name is Rhythmi! There isn't anything I'd rather do than become an Operator. Do you think I can become one? You can tell I will become one, can't you?
I'm only seeing you for the first time ever, so it's not like I know, but... Sure thing! No problemo! You'll be an Operator all right!
That's right! Those are the words I wanted to hear! Yes!
Rhythmi... Are you maybe confusing our Ranger with a fortune-teller or something? Excuse me, Ranger. How about me? Will I become a Ranger?
Say, aren't you confusing me with a fortune-teller, too? But, I can tell you this about you: your strong will shines through loud and proud. I'm sure you'll make it. Why, you might even have the fixings to make a better Ranger than me! But that's if you can avoid spinning your wheels, so to speak.
Uh... Is that right?! I'll do the best I can! Um, okay, here's my second question...
No fair, Keith! One question each! Ranger Crawford's busy, too. So, on to my question. Have you ever made any mistakes?
Mistakes, you ask? That's all there was when I started. Like the time I dumped juice all over my Styler. That was nasty. Or the time I tried to capture a stuffed doll. Oh, and another time, I put on my Ranger uniform on top of pajamas... ...Hold up, don't make me say these things!

:cawg:

What makes you glad that you became a Ranger?
I'd have to say the big smiles we get to see after helping people or Pokemon in need.
I hope I get to see smiles like that soon!
That's the spirit! Keep that spirit burning, and you'll be sure to succeed. You know, I'm looking forward to the chance of working with you folks some day. Keep a positive attitude and work hard!

My question next! Ranger Crawford, has Ms. April ever been angry with you?
I'll say she has! She used to blow up at me once a day!
Now you know that isn't true. It wasn't once a day. It had to be at least three times a day. ...But, that's not the whole story. Crawford was a wonderful student. He kept everyone's spirits up with his kindness and sense of humor.

Music stops

Oh yeah, they use voicemail instead of text message now. Technology! :science:

Crawford, do you hear me? It's me, Barlow! There's a Mantine hurt off the eastern shore of School Island. The Mantine apparently ran into a cargo ship. Luana's headed to the School by boat for you. Join up with her, Crawford, and head to the site immediately. We're going to need your help on this one!

New Music: Tension
Roger, Leader!

We're coming to save you!
*To Lamont* Principal Lamont! Since the students are so worried, I'll report back on how the Mission went. I'm sorry I have to cut the Outdoor Class short like this!
There's no need to apologize. Besides, listen. Isn't that your boat?

As amusing as it would be, that isn't the boat talking.

All right, students, keep working at it! Let's meet again sometime!

Music: Ranger School Field
It's like we got to see an awesome scene!
The boat's already tiny on the horizon...
Well, everyone! That was the shortest Outdoor Class ever. But it certainly was the most gripping and realistic of all Outdoor Classes, too. Okay, everyone! Let's return to our classrooms.

*Everyone except the trio leave*

You know, I'm getting even more pumped up about becoming a Ranger. I still have 37 questions left, but I think I'm going to find those answers myself!
A real Ranger guaranteed that I would become an Operator!
There are no guarantees anywhere. You have to grab hold of your dreams and make them come true!
You think I don't now that? I'm going to do it. I'll make my dream come true!
I'm not going to lose, either! Not when I have a rival like Kellyn! Hey, why don't the three of us make a pledge right now by the Pledge Stone? Let's pledge to each other that we'll make our dreams come true!
You bet! I'll pledge that! Kellyn, what about you? ... Okay! That's the spirit! Let's get back to class!

*The three leave*

Next time: even LESS gameplay... :negative:

Music: Ranger School

Do you remember that Mantine Crawford went to rescue during our Outdoor Class? The Ranger Union took it in and nursed it back to health. This morning, the Mantine was safely returned to the sea!

Now that we're all feeling good about that news, let's get our lesson started. Today, as scheduled, the topic is the teamwork between Rangers and Operators.

Oh, I know this one! The Rangers do all the hard work while the Operators stay in the base, recharging Stylers when needed :eng101:

If there is no trust between a Ranger and the Operator, it's disastrous. Even a simple Mission could become impossible to manage. Rangers go where there are no roads to guide them. It's the job of the Operators to light the way for Rangers where no roads exist. Of course, that doesn't literally mean holding a flashlight for Rangers in the field. Operators support Rangers in other ways, like recharging their Stylers. Not only that, Operators provide Rangers with information and advice.

...That's new. Maybe Operators will actually contribute to the plot? You wish.

The Operators reach out to Rangers all over from the Union's Operation Room. Does anyone know what they call that communication system?
Yes! It's called voicemail!
Correct! However, your School Styler is not fitted with the voicemail feature.

feature turned on. We were able to borrow them specially from the Ranger Union. Principal Lamont, who was there on business, had to ask for them himself. We'll use them today to demonstrate the field operations of Rangers. Let's start with Rhythmi as the Operator and Keith doing the Ranger part.
Ms. April, Keith isn't here yet.
That's rare for Keith. Did he sleep in, I wonder? Well, fine, we'll get Kellyn to do that Ranger part. *gives the Stylers to Rhythmi and Kellyn*

No need to sound so resigned about it :sigh:

Oh, wow! I can communicate using this! Hello? Can you hear me? This is Rhythmi. Come in, Ranger! ...Huh? We're too close, and you can hear me loud and clear without the Styler? Well, then, we should get farther apart and try again.

*Kellyn begins leaving the room*

We're not in a hallway! :argh:

Ah, Ms. April, I'm awfully sorry to disrupt your class. There is a small matter about which I would like to speak with Keith.
Oh, well... Keith is running late today. It's not like him, but...
Late, you say... You see, we have a problem on our hands. We had a number of Stylers stored in the Staff Room. Had, I say. Now the entire lot of them has disappeared. I've already confirmed the innocence of all my students regarding this. But that Keith boy is uncharacteristically absent from class, you say... Perhaps it's taking him time to find a place to "stash" all those stolen Stylers?

Rhythmi actually bolts from her desk upon hearing this.

Keith is a prankster, but he's no thief!
Oh, do be still! He runs in the hallways, he sneaks into the basement where he's not permitted... It's only natural that he should be viewed with suspicion!

Kincaid is getting worse every update :argh:

Mr. Kincaid. Isn't this what you always preach? It's wrong to cast suspicion on others without proof? May I have a little time? I will go look for Keith and your missing Stylers.

I'll look, too!

*Everyone except Rhythmi and Kellyn leave*

Kellyn! Let's scour the schoolhouse from top to bottom. We have to prove Keith's innocent. If anything comes up: voicemail. Okay? *leaves*

thoroughly first.

Rhythmi won't let us leave, so let's search this place in the usual order.

Keith's missing? Didn't you mean to say Isaac?
Keith? He hasn't come around here. Stylers are missing from the Staff Room? I didn't hear about that.

Kincaid seems to be less accusatory to his students. Maybe. Hopefully.

to the basement at least.

No poo poo

I don't see him around, so I get this feeling he isn't here. Besides, it's not Keith's regular nap time.

This is a library, you know? If it's not you, then it's your friend Keith. He was shouting in the hallway earlier.

Really? Where?

Yesterday, that is. Haven't seen him today.

:(

Keith? He's never come here during class. He's always here during lunch break. With his pillow.

He must have known that Principal Lamont would be away on business.

This is Rhythmi on the ground floor. Please come down to the front door! And hurry!
*When talked to* I haven't seen Janice anywhere, either.

school yard when I wound a Styler. Did either of you drop yours by any chance? ...Nope, you've got yours on.

:ms:

Kellyn, we should go look in the school yard. Thanks for that clue, Janice!

Music: Ranger School Field

missing from the Staff Room?

*Kellyn picks up the Styler*

There could be more on the ground! Let's look around!

*Kellyn picks up the Styler*

Wait, I hear voices... Let's go check!

New Music: Ranger School Road

And who is that man?
The guy's a stinking thief! He came creeping out of the Staff Room, so I called out to him. Then, bam! He was off and running!

Music: Time to Flee

I love that the game literally calls him "Sneaky Guy." :allears:

I'm scramming! Adios!

I can't get a good portrait of him, so I'll use that instead for now.

:cawg:

So a human can also do a Target Clear. The more you know :eng101:

Waaaaah! I can't see! It's heavy! It hurts! It stinks! Heeeeeeeeeelp!
*Takes the Stylers* Wahahaha! A Slakoth fell out of the tree! It serves you right! That's what you get for being a thief!
Please! I won't do it again! Heeeeeeeeelp!
Let's go. Who cares about a guy like that?
What are you saying?! It's the Ranger's job to help people in trouble! Kellyn! Please! Capture that Slakoth!

It's just a regular Slakoth. We've met one last update.

Music: Mission Clear

Whew... Aah... Fweh... Saved at last... Thank you for saving me.

You disappeared as well, so we were looking for you. Oh, and here's Keith! And the Stylers, too!
Ms. April, this man is the thief who took the Stylers.
Yeah, why'd you steal our Stylers? Do you know how important they are to us?
I... I'm sorry... I've always had this dream of becoming a Ranger. But I grew up without doing anything about it... I had so many other dreams that I wanted to follow, but... I could never decide what I really wanted to do with my life... But the one dream I could never give up was to be a Ranger... I thought, maybe, if I had a Styler, then I could do something about it, but...
What are you saying?! Please don't make me angry here! It doesn't matter how old you are. Even an adult can join our Ranger School. With enough effort, even you can become a Ranger. If you have a dream you can't let go of, it's up to you to make it real.
T...teacher lady... I also got bewitched when I saw all those Stylers just sitting there... I was only hoping to get one, but I ended up scooping up the whole lot of them...
Just like the way it is with you and your dreams... You're greedy, aren't you? You should go home and really think about what you want to do. Why not think about how you could become a Ranger properly?
Sigh... I'll do that. ...W-W-Wait a second?! G-Go home?! You'll just let me go home? Without any punishment or anything? T-Teacher lady... I can't believe it... Snivel...

the thief who made off with the Stylers.
Ah, so that took place in my absence? Well, though the thief got away, I'm quite relieved no one was hurt. Recovering the Stylers is a bonus.
Grumble, grumble... Keith gets blamed because his everyday conduct is so deplorable... Mutter, mutter...

What happened to "You shouldn't suspect others without proof?" :ironicat:

I must say, I was impressed by Rhythmi's belief in her friend. That could be the most essential quality for an Operator.
Ehehe...
Kellyn, your teamwork with Rhythmi and your capture were outstanding. I could tell right away from the big smile on the Slakoth's face.
*To Keith* Keith. You're much too reckless. You must rely on your colleagues more. There is only so much a Ranger can do all alone. I think one day, you will be faced with a situation that makes you accept that. That said... There's no denying you did a good deed. ...Are you paying attention?
Grumble, grumble... That thief didn't get away... We actually let him go... Mutter, mutter...
*To Rhythmi* Rhythmi, listen up. Hey, you understand, don't you? The rotten way I feel about this. But, hey, Rhythmi... You believed in me and stood up for me. That really made me happy.
Like the thief today, perhaps there are shadows always lurking in all of our hearts. What's important is to never give in to that darkness in our hearts. It is as written in the books of our Library... In the Almia region, there is an ancient word: "vatonage." It means "to reawaken light that has been submerged in darkness." Vatonage... ...Today, you all shine with the brilliance of gems. May you never lose that shine. Oh, my, I have rambled on. I believe it's time people returned to their classes.

*Fade to white*

You feel that? That's foreshadowing being slammed into your face.

After years of meaning to make one, I finally made an account after reading your Ranger 1 LP so I could follow this one as it happens.
Really looking forward to it too, only played SoA once before my cart broke so I'm nowhere near as familiar as I am with Ranger 1 and GS.

Internships. You will get to experience what it's like to be a real Ranger, Operator, or Mechanic. For that, you will have to go out to the facilities that you've signed up for. Don't take any side trips on the way. And please be careful.

*The nameless students leave*

Kellyn and Keith, you two are off to the Ranger Base in Vientown. That's where Crawford is. He's the Ranger who left our Outdoor Class to go rescue a Mantine, remember?
I'm trying out to become an Operator, so I'm going off to the Ranger Union. Oh, that reminds me. Today's newspaper had a special feature on the Ranger Union!

The Ranger Union's really far from here. I'd better leave soon. See you this evening! *leaves*
Kellyn, you're off to Vientown, too, right? Let's go together.

Of course, there's still people all over the school we can talk to.

The Rangers of Vientown are all somewhat quirky in their own ways. You might keep that in mind.
Are you feeling nervous? I'm feeling all right.

Then, it won't be a 1-day Internship, but it sure will be a 1-day detention slip!

Altru Inc.'s labs on a special deal. I'll be seeing the latest technological breakthroughs.
Isaac makes me envious. Altru Inc. is all sorts of famous. They're in oil, construction, and even in the research of new energy sources.

to run in the hallways. Uh... Do they even have hallways there?

The Rangers are graduates of this School. They'll be happy to teach you things.

really, it's like going on a field trip, isn't it?

That's everything of interest in the school, but there's still some OUTSIDE the school.

Music: Ranger School Field

Our very first starter! :toot:

It's cute how its cheek puff out :3:

Base EXP: 10

Well, look what we got here.

Guess we can cross this off the checklist.

The strange tree is a Bonsly. Who could've guessed :geno:

I honestly don't know what this supposed to be :iiam:

Base EXP: 10

The third interesting thing outside is by far the most notable one.

Music: Time to Flee

Playing hide-and-seek with some Bidoof?
No, that's not it! Can't you tell by what you're seeing? These B-B-Bi-Bidoof are attacking me! Listen to them! "Beedehoo, beedehoo!" They're going to maul me, I can tell!
No, Little Tim. I think the Bidoof just want to play.
Sure, boy, that's easy for you to say. But I won't deny it. I'm scared, even deathly a-scared of Pokemon!

That's rough :smith:

Awww, but these Bidoof are so cute... Kellyn, you've never met? That guy's Little Tim. He's the milkman around here. He's seriously afraid of Pokemon, but they seem to like him. I'm suspecting it's the smell of milk that makes him a Pokemon magnet.

That's even worse :patriot:

Anyway... A Pokemon Ranger always steps up to lend a helping hand. These Bidoof seem kind of agitated, though. They might be a bit tough. Let's split up. You capture one, and I'll get the other!

They're Bidoof. How hard can they be?

Music: Wild Pokemon Capture

Ohmygodtheycanchargeinastraightlineconsecutivelynowpleasesendhelp! :kingsley:

Music: Mission Clear

It nearly took half of our health... :ohdear:

Okay! That's done. Little Tim, everything's under control. We've calmed the Bidoof and released them.
*Climbs down the tree* Aiyiyi, that scared me a-plenty. I was good and scared, but I was saved. I was saved, but I'm still good and scared. But I owe both of you a big thanks. Those Bidoof were out to maul me. By the way... This here student seems to be a new face to me.
This is Kellyn, who came from Fiore. Kellyn's awesome at doing captures. Second only to me, even.
Oh, a new student, you say? Well, my new friend, thank you ever so kindly for saving me. I run a small dairy farm with my family in a town called Vientown. You should come calling one day. *jumps around* It'd be like this. Our young'uns will be happy if you visited.
Little Tim's got a bunch of kids. His wife's famous around here, too.
I surely won't forget you saving me. You'll make fine Rangers, I'm sure of that! *leaves*
We're running late. Let's hurry to Vientown!

That whole encounter took quite a bit of our HP, so let's fix that.

Music: Ranger School Road

With a power of 1, Pichu's recharge will only restore 5 HP. That's half of what we start with at the beginning of this game :flaccid:

It's better than nothing, I guess.

heard. And, instead of competing like usual, you even cooperated with each other. That's how real Rangers would act. Now, keep your chins up and off you go to Vientown as if you were real Rangers!

Off we go to (a momentary) freedom!

Did I mention that Ranger School is located on an island? Well, here's the bridge connecting it to the mainland.

My big brother... He's not here.
Your big brother, huh? Who might that be?

:ms:

Melody, it is you!
Hi, Isaac! I came to meet you! *hugs Isaac*
Melody! I told you not to. Didn't I say you're not allowed to leave Pueltown by yourself?
I'm sorry! I just wanted to see you...
Melody... You're still a little kid. That's why I worry about you so much. Well, let me introduce you to my friends.
*To everyone* This is my sister Melody.
I'm Ponte! This is Keith and Kellyn. Nice to meet you, Melody.
Melody? I'm not angry with you anymore. Thanks for coming to meet me. We'll go back together.
Yep! Bye-bye, Big Brother's friends!

*Isaac, Melody and Ponte leave*

Isaac says "Melody" followed by pretty much every single punctuation in that dialogue :v:

We have to get moving, too. We'll look bad if we show up late. I think Vientown's off to the west (←).

The next area is just a little zigzag path. It has only one new Pokemon.

Buneary has no attack, but it moves by jumping around. As you might guess, it can easily hit our line and break it.

Thankfully, we're not in Ranger 1, where breaking our line means we have to start over :toot:

Base EXP: 10

And with that, it's time to enter our first town!

New Music: Vientown

Oh, wow, my heart's starting to pound. How are you feeling?

We're going to meet actual Rangers! :swoon:

New Music: Ranger Base

Isn't there anyone here? Hello?! We're here from the Ranger School! We're Keith and Kellyn!
Oh, I'm sorry! I had to duck down for something, so I didn't see you come in.

I have something for you. Over here, please.

*Kellyn and Keith approach her*

Are you surprised by how quiet our Ranger Base is? Everyone had to go out to handle a critical Mission.
Everyone had to go out on it? It must be one whopper of a crisis!
Yes. Yes, it is. Some Bidoof... Oh, no, I can't force myself to say it! But, anyway, I think I know who you are. Kellyn and Keith from the School. We've been told you were coming. Our Leader left me a letter for you. Let me read it for you. Welcome to the both of you! Here's a Mission from the get-go! I've left an extremely important parcel with our Operator. Collect it from her, and bring it to Breeze Hill, which is west (←) of the town. That's it for the letter. I have the extremely important parcel right here for you. Please don't tip it on its side. And never, ever flip it upside down. Here it is. Please do treat it with care!

Kellyn and Keith accepted the extremely important parcel.

To get to Breeze Hill, go west (←) when you leave the building. You'll need to turn and go toward the beach. Keep going past the beach until you come to the sign and stairs for Breeze Hill.

Monitors News from other Ranger Bases and the Ranger Union is posted.

The unnamed Operator will aid us on our Extremely Important Mission by recharging our Styler.

Music: Vientown

the start. If we succeed, we could make it into tomorrow's newspaper, I bet.

"Those who meet there become good partners."

Since this is an Extremely Important Mission and all, I think we can forgo the NPC chat.

That's why we get along so well together.
There's an old legend about this beach. If you meet someone here, you're sure to become best friends.

So cute, so cute. What's wrong? What's wrong, Munchlax? You're not saying you're hungry already? Ah, Starly, Starly. Go on, eat up all you like.

*Kellyn and Keith approach*

The way you're dressed tells me you're students of the Ranger School, yes? On 1-day Internship, I would guess. Well, then, let me give you a quick quiz that you'll find enlightening. Here's my first question. What is a Partner Pokemon?
Oh, that's an easy one. A Partner Pokemon is an especially friendly Pokemon that always goes with a Ranger.

They help the Rangers in various ways, including moral support and permanent Poke Assist.

Ding-ding! Correct! The Rangers I know all said they met their first Partners here at Nabiki Beach. Very well! Question two! A Ranger can only have one Pokemon as the one-and-only Partner?
Nope! That's not true!
Ding-ding! Right again! A Ranger will get opportunities to add the second Partner and more as time goes on. But, you can still only have one Partner accompany you at any one time. The other Partner Pokemon must remain patient and remain at home.

I'm sure this whole conversation is not important.

And I'm sure this secluded cave is also not important.

But just in case that the conversation IS important, which partner Pokemon would you choose? You know, hypothetically.

Let's have a vote! I certainly wouldn't choose Munchlax. Translation: I'm vetoing Munchlax :colbert:
