What really led to the changes that freed up offenses was Ricky Manning Jr and the rest of Carolina's defense talking up how the roughed up the Colts receivers during the 2003 season and the NFC teams in the playoffs.

Intruder posted:Lots of Mark Duper doubters ITT Both of the Marks Brothers were good, Clayton might have been better. If there was a problem it was they never found a good running back until Marino was at the end, and even when they did it was like 1 or 2 years of Karim Abdul-Jabbar. Wouldn't surprise me if they skimped on the OL too since Marino had that instant release that made him hard to sack, but I don't know/remember if that was actually the case. Yeah, Marino knew he was toast he just never ever believed it until it was exposed in that game. He couldn’t even make a 15 yard out

That might have been the case by the end but his OL at the start of his career is thought to be one of the NFL's all-time best. The biggest problems seemed to be running back and defense, largely.
