It wasnt that bad, after you left I got to help put out the fire!

Hi I found people that had skunks as pets on a yahoo mailing list in the early 00s and knew I had to had one cause they seemed super neato and I got my first baby in 2003 and her name was Zooey. I picked her out for the dot on the back of her neck

She was really awesome and like a dog would run up to people and want to lick their face. I was so in love but she died suddenly after 4 months and Ive never been so sad about losing a pet

That sucked but the next year I got another baby and named her Chloe. She was cool but way different than Zooey and it took a lot more time to win her over so that we could be best friends. Around this time was when my mom had cancer and definitely wasnt going to make it so Chloe helped me a lot get through that as well, these pictures are from the first day I got her home, she was very tired cause it was a long drive home

Here she is a little more grown up

How social are skunks? Would having two be asking for trouble or a brilliant idea?

I put my thumb up my bum and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth.

We have a family of skunks nearby that have befriended my wife and hang out with her when she smokes outside at night. They seem very nice, but I am in constant fear that these friendly, affable, wild creatures will suddenly immolate me in the fires of stink. Cute, though.

For the most part they get along well with other ones especially when they live in the same house and know each other. They are solitary in the wild but will hang out with each other as pets, the most Ive had at once is 8 but some people that get really into rescue can have like, tons

Sometimes they dont get along as seen here in this tense situation, Fizzgig is in the crate and Riley is the white one and they always hated each other so I had to keep them apart

However in this situation Chloe is sad that Fizzgig is in the crate cause they fuckin loved each other and hung out all the time and it was super cute

Fizzgig was also the funniest skunk Ive ever had, whenever he was stoked he would run around at top speed making chainsaw noises and hopping like Pepe le Pew. He went through like 3 houses before he found one he liked with my so and I. He was a terror and one time he pooped in a persons zen rock garden thing lol

They wont, if they get annoyed they will give you tons of warning, first hissing and stomping their front feet really hard, then turn around with their tail in the air and look at you to aim and if you are still not aware enough to know you should be running away your gonna get sprayed in the face. Its a last resort cause they only get like 5 shots then it takes a week or so to reload plus they dont like the smell either. If you ever happen on one in a trap cover it with a blanket and be real quiet and slow to release them since theyd rather run away than spray you or get it on themselves

Ive pet wild baby skunks I saw running along the side of the road since I know their behavior and was able to get them off the road and into the woods. Also rehabbers sometimes will keep wild skunks with sprayers that they cant release because once they get older its major surgery to remove the stinkers instead of easy when they are babies

Hello okay how long is the average lifespan in captivity second would having a tame skunk prevent wild skunks from attacking my hives?

I am a beekeeper by trade and next spring I'll be putting out hives, and oddly enough skunks are worse than bears for apiaries. Bears knock poo poo over, skunks attack the hive, get swarmed then roll, and can kill off a significant portion of a hives workers in a few minutes, potentially crippling the hive. My mentor used electric fences and traps but I won't.

I've been considering options but a pet skunk would be wonderful, as I used to keep rats till their short lifespans led me to axolotls.

Thank you for this thread!

Are there breeders or is it mainly rescues who's momma got hit or something?
So a vet surgically removes the scent glands when they're babies? Specialist vet?
Can you walk them on a leash?
Do they gnaw stuff they shouldn't?
Can you litter train them? Or do they naturally go in specific places like ferrets?
I love how wild skunks walk around like they own the place like nobody is gonna gently caress with them because nobody will. Most wild animals will scatter if a human gets too close, but skunks will just walk right past you like you aren't there.

They live like 10 years in captivity and some have gone 20. I dont think having a tame one would prevent them from hurting the bees which I completely understand your concern since skunks love to eat bees and dont get stung cause of their long fur no idea how it doesnt bother their mouths but it doesnt. Other than electric fences and traps the only thing I can think of is something that they cant climb over. They are not good climbers at all but it has to be smooth, Ive had to get baby gates that are clear plastic instead of fence since they will climb the lattice

Ive had pet rats as well and agree they are great but live way too short

You could get a pet one anyway just check your state laws and most importantly find a vet that is not too far away and can treat skunks. Skunkhaven usually has pretty up to date state laws

Thank you! Yea they can eat pretty much anything in moderation except the normal stuff like chocolate plus raisins, onions and garlic the biggest problem is their weight since they get fat really easy, in the wild they can roam up to 20 miles a day to get food and without that exercise they add weight really fast

The biggest breeder is Ruby Fur Farm in Iowa, most peoples skunks come from there but there are also a bunch of small breeders especially in states where you cannot import pet skunks like PA and NJ

The breeders remove the scent glands and its non surgical when they are babies so I think just someone experienced does it but I dont know for sure. I do know one idiot did it to his own baby at a show and it went as well as you would think and pissed off a lot of people, he didnt hurt the skunk, just the people

Yep Ive had ones that like leashes, some that dont like my current Scout and Ive had ones that didnt need a leash since they would stay close to me all the time, mostly the ones I raised from babies but some just always want to be near you. Chloe wouldnt go more than like 10 feet away from me and she would run back if I called her and she was also very protective of me and would hiss at people that got near us lol

They can definitely be destructive but they like digging way more than biting. They love to dig carpet near doors since they want to know whats on the other side and absolutely destroy it. Their front arms and claws are super strong

Some can be litter trained but for the most part you find out where they want to poo poo and put a box there, some are really good and some give no fucks and will poo poo freely, they kinda train you on that one. They keep themselves very clean like a cat though

Thats one of the things I love about them is they give no shits cause they know they can gently caress you up for the most part if you bother them, its also why they get hit by cars a lot though since they are so secure in their defense

Gonna have to dig into this. In canada the law tends to be you cant breed, buy or sell any native wild species as pets. I did a bunch of research into raven and crow legality a decade ago and what I learned is that if you rescue an animal you are allowed to keep it. If you capture it, against the law. If you buy or sell it, against the law, but theres a falconry school I looked into that, for donations, will give you a gift of a certain bird egg you request. If memory serves a bald eagle was somewhere around 5 grand and a raven was like 3500.

It really depends on the individual but most of them are more of a monster when they are little and chill out a ton when they get older, like 2 years. You HAVE to get them fixed, both boys and girls before their first year or they will turn into assholes. It can also be dangerous for the girls as they are monoestrous and heat can be very hard on them and they can get sick and die if they dont mate. I have met skunks that were not good pets but its pretty rare and usually its because the owner was a jerk or ignorant about how they should be handled. Some people think they have to stay in cages all the time like you would do with a rat or guinea pig but they shouldnt, they need to be around people and other pets since they are very social. The ones that have been kept in cages their whole life can lash out and be terrible pets and have to be rescued by someone with a lot of experience, time and patience to work with them. Riley was a guy who was kept in his cage for far too long when he was little and he wasnt a jerk but he was really skittish and hated people for a long time until one of my friends got him and was able to show him that humans are cool and nice and he turned into a super sweetheart when I got him and for the 5 years that I had him

I loved him a lot

Bath time!

All dry and fluffy again

Not all babies are assholes though, my third baby Artieboo was always the sweetest little guy the whole time I had him. Like he would have been totally a weed smokin surfer dude if he could walk and have opposable thumbs and was able to surf and drive stick in his VW van

Just look at this face

Little baby

The year I got him I stayed with the lady that adopted out the babies so I got to play with all of them and watch them go home with their owners. It was such an awesome few days and when I was leaving saw an incredible sunrise leaving Clearwater where the sun was coming up behind a cloud, the picture doesnt do it justice

That might be hard to do with a skunk. I don't know how they are with traveling in a vehicle, but I do know that they don't have a homing instinct, so you can't exactly let it out of the van to go to the bathroom like you might with a dog. If a pet skunk escapes its enclosure and wanders out of sight, it has no way of finding its way back and you may never see it again.

Yea they actually do pretty good riding though I usually crate them while its moving. Ive let them run free before and one time Chloe was all up in my poo poo trying to drive and I didnt even bring a crate that time and it could have been dangerous

The biggest worry is the state/country laws traveling around and yea I know nothing about Canada and Mexico. I forget where I said it but I always put them in a crate with a cover over it when traveling through illegal states and if I were to be pulled over just tell them its my sick dog/cat if it even came up at all. For the most part I dont think most cops would even know about them being an illegal pet, the people that do are state Department of Natural Resources of whatever state, they are the ones that enforce it. I have done it an incredibly huge amount of times through a ton of states with lots of different "exotic" animals, Ive had a raccoon and coatimundis as well and sometimes with all of them in the same car and never had a problem. Not saying it cant happen since it would only take that one bad time but keep your nose clean, drive speed limits, all lights working dont get pulled over and make your chances as safe as you can. The worst would to be caught by some huge rear end in a top hat cop with a stick up their rear end and ruin your life right there

Anyway here is Odie, we got him at a skunk show from a friend thats one of the good rescuers who had too many skunks. He was another HUGE sweetheart, omg everybody that met him fell in love. He would let anyone hold and pet him and he was super chill. His owner moved to an illegal state or something so he gave him to our friend and you could tell his owner loved him just by his personality

He slept like this all the time, lol

I thought this was Odie when I was going through my pics but its actually Fizzgig sleeping the same way

hockey jockey posted:

Yea a bunch of colors! The ones I can think of off the top of my head are smoke like Odie, Aurora, apricot like Riley and Artieboo, the skunk on the skateboard is a champagne and the brown babies are chocolates. They can have different markings too like a falling where they have white on their head and neck and fades away before their tail, silverbacks where the white starts at the head and its one big wide stripe instead of two and usually ends on the tail, chips where they have white chips on their legs and spots on their backs and tummys like Fizzgig, Scout has chips on her legs too

Its mostly breeding but there can be albinos in the wild though life is harder for them since they dont have warning stripes. Georgia actually has a state law that you cant have a black and white but any other color so that it kinda proves you didnt take it from the wild which is illegal

I dont think Ive even posted Scout in here yet, shes my current skunk. I just got her 3 years ago on new years eve eve
