If democracy was so laudable to begin with it would have maintained better checks and balances on palpatine to ensure that he had to attempt to carry out the war in good faith. George's position is essentially that people are fundamentally disinterested and will allow dictators to seize power through incompetence and he may well be right.

I've heard arguments that George should have made the Jedi more sinister in the prequels but honestly they're already pretty fuckin' bad. Remember in Attack of the Clones where Obi-Wan slices that assassin's arm off in the middle of a crowded bar and Anakin just cows the crowd with "Jedi business, go back to your drinks."? Or when Yoda and Mace Windu tell Obi-Wan "yeah, grab that bounty hunter, drag his rear end back here. question him, we will."

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
Palpatine succeeded by manipulating the corporations in which he had an interest into conflict with the state and then holding them up as a boogeyman. They’re the perfect boogeyman because they are in fact evil as poo poo and will make people genuinely, unironically glad when a ruthless tyrant arrives to crush them at whatever price.

The Jedi were always loving assholes lol. Obi-wan deliberately lied to and manipulated Luke from the moment he met him in the Wastes. He continues to defend this lie literally from beyond the grave.

The Jedi ideology isn’t an absolute moral good and all Lucas’ stories, and a lot of the better non-Lucas stuff, accept this and proceed from that point of view.

I can see when you are lying.

Funny because the prequels are how a good example of how art dies, with stories and characters being ignored in order to convey heavy-handed and unconvincing tales of politics. Regardless of how correct the message is.

Not empty-quoting this.

I think one of the best things that the original trilogy did was introduce a science fiction franchise that wasn't glitz and buck rogers chrome, where poo poo is dirty and ugly because it was built by space truckers for space truckers. Real world design also makes art critics cringe.

On topic, I do wish there had been a bit more of a nod to the jedi being a religious order of secret police with mind control powers.
