That is an odd looking plane. It looks more bug-like than half of the enemy.

Good as new.
This game looks really cool. They should make another one and bring it to PC since some EDF games are already there.

Homing lasers? Are we going to get a gunbuster?

We'll start,
like many good things,
with a bear.

It's nice of the EDF to give you Lagi's lock on laser, I'm pretty sure it will be as helpful here as it was in Panzer Dragoon.

I think even the EDF might consider Gunbuster a tiny bit overkill for this conflict.

Might.

The EDF is entirely built around 'there is no overkill, there is only open fire and I need to reload.'

Production values and translation goofiness aside, the core gameplay loop is kinda...meh. There's really nothing that sets it that far apart from Ace Combat or its clones enough to make it really stand out - the strategy for every single enemy we've seen so far is "shoot it until it dies," and that's honestly kind of a disappointment when it comes to fighting giant bugs and the like. Sure, EDF has the same philosophy, but it's really good at making a lot of different enemy types that force you to adapt your strategy for a mission. Also, as hilarious as the translation is there's really not much to speak of for plot/dialogue, which is important for AC and is legit fun atmosphere in EDF.

Well, I can see some pretty clear reasons already.

EDF lets you go crazy in a way few games do. The massive armies of aliens and overpowered weapons make for a unique experience, and the weapon drops make for an addictive core gameplay loop. You play a tough mission to try to find a cool new gun so you can fight tougher bugs and survive tougher missions with better guns. Whole cities would explode, cars would fly around, corpses would bounce, and you got destruction on a scale no other game offered.

This, meanwhile, has a more conventional unlock system, and conventional amounts of violence for an arcade flier. There's nothing you can point to in the regular missions in the way you can show someone a building exploding to a rocket in EDF to sell them immediately, and there's no reason to repeatedly replay levels beyond enjoying them. You won't get a flamethrower turret as a random drop.

As for Ace Combat? Well, even ignoring questions of mission design, there's a bit of an edge for Ace Combat in that it had five years and three games of head start, but it also has more planes from the first game on, with real world models instead of this game's weird modified versions. People had what they wanted on the arcade fighter pilot scene already. No need for this.

IT'S ME, BURROWS!

IT WAS ME ALL ALONG, BURROWS!
"EDF-level horde shooter" and "verisimilitudinous aircraft contact damage" should have some pretty obvious issues when combined and the developers seem to have understood that, but the side they wound up going with is, well, pretty conventional as chiasaur said.
you can't escape the basic premise of "glass cannon constantly moving fowards in 3D space" inherent to arcade planes with just goofy set dressing of barnstorming, bug enemies, and the whole televised to an audience thing.

crank the live audience aspect up to the point of having Q3-esque bots simulating a twitch chat, with certain in-game conditions prompting them into spamming the EDF anthem. more and goofier weapons. planes that behave significantly differently instead of just some slight stat changes and a ground attack specialist that's slower than what should be its major target - VTOLs, planes that aren't afraid of taking a hit, gunships that can damage armored enemies anywhere, gigantic bombers refitted with way too many missiles, flying mechs, whatever. something to resolve "EDF swarms" vs "impact = instant death and failure". bigger maps and truly absurd scale enemies. co-op and NPC planes. objectives that aren't just... :nallears:

in a weird parallel, the Star Fox Assault thread has observed how easily that game could become EDF-esque.

Good-bye aliens!

Well that was certainly an ending. v:v:v And certainly a game too that probably could've worked a lot better if the budget hadn't been a couple of hundred bucks and done over a couple of lunch breaks.

So you're making a Hardcore Gaming History podcast then? :cheeky:

It's a waste of a good premise. I'm trying to think of other planes vs aliens games and all I'm getting is the godawful Independence Day spinoff and Incoming which isn't even all planes. One could fully embrace the b-movie feel with this kind of thing and it could be really fun, even with the silly balloon missions.

Too bad but I guess budget shooters were everywhere on the PS2 and not everything can make it through.

I guess Starfox Assault kind of counts but that is also a hell of a lot of not-plane stuff.

YF-23 tailplane maybe? Though I don't recognise those nubs. I find it hard to believe that they would have made a custom aircraft for this but who knows!

Someone had some good ideas but the execution falls way short. They even launched buildings into the air as fireworks, but it's not as fun as that should have been.
