By making Russia appear as winners to themselves, he was able to create a swell of national pride enough that they confidently backed him during the annexation and rode a populism wave from there. We are technically still dealing with the aftermath of what began with the Sochi Olympics, what with Ukraine and Russian and NATO being a hot topic. I worked for a Japanese woman helping her run an international business for a year and a half and I will never ever ever do that again because yes I was constantly in trouble for not reading between the lines, but even worse it wasn't overt trouble just a lovely low-level awkward boil where she was just incensed at me all the time but wouldn't say it or make any comment to help me get better in any manner. Requests for direct feedback were simply ignored. I still get flashbacks to when I asked her how She would like to split the work of responding to emails (we shared one business email for the whole business and she had some she preferred to handle herself, and some she wanted me to be on top of personally), she just said 'I think it's rather clear how we should handle this, don't you?' and then moved on to having a phone call with a client. N....no! It's not! That's why I asked!!! Seriously, I had to up the amount of therapy sessions during that time to cope with the stress of always loving up but not knowing how. Just knowing I was inexplicably never doing my job right in my boss's eyes, but not able to get any clear direction, now matter what approach I took. Yeh, I get that we want to stay away from Otherizing people, and it is always a good reminder to be aware of it. But, culture is pretty much the main way we align ourselves as people nowadays, it's how we tribalize, and differences in expectations and behaviors do happen that cause culture shocks. Otherwise this thread wouldn't exist.

Yeah some of that wanting their own Korean boyfriend stuff is because of the stereotype that Asian men are less masculine overall - so there's this idealized romantic ideal of a gentle Asian lover vs rough American/European men. So it's not like that sorta racism went away, Western people still feminize Asian men, it's just become 'ok so what if they're less masculine, that makes them better! 😍'

While you could claim it's mostly subtextual, by the end of the first season, there's absolutely no question about the fact that one guy is head over heels for the other. The only thing one could argue is left to interpretation is whether it is reciprocated - our main character has a monk-like ascetic nature where romantic love just isn't a part of his world. That's pretty much where the romance comes in, is him figuring out over time that maybe this isn't just good friendship.
