First to run after Corbyn said he'd step down, generally in the Corbyn Cabinet Camp. Keir Starmer Was the longtime favourite to win. Probable melt/Milibandist. Britain should have swapped it for some of the Canaries that are full of UK tourists and businesses anyway. Or gone the full circle route of Gibraltar from UK to Spain, Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco, Western Sahara to SADR and Canarios, Canaries to UK.

TfL - the direct descendant of that - is one of the big reasons why London can support any kind of economic activity at all, and even Johnson recognised that, accelerating the nationalisation and in-sourcing of the suburban rail lines (to create the Overground) and tube maintenance respectively that Livingstone started the moment he got back in to control of London's transport.

Who decides what's an imperialist relic? Ceuta and Melilla fit the standard of imperialist relics, being agreed between France and Spain as part of an imperialist war in Morocco over which Moroccans had little say, far more than Gibraltar, being a product of a treaty between two European colonialist powers.

A Buttery Pastry posted:Not surprising to see the UK left resist attempts to reckon with the UK's imperialist past. At its core, it is no more able to confront the myths of Britain's imperial past than the Tories, even if it doesn't go so far as to celebrate it, preferring instead to champion anti-imperialism in the abstract, or to focus on flashier subjects.

A Buttery Pastry posted:It's a matter of degree, not kind. It's not exactly the only time UK posters have betrayed thinking on the EU and foreigners in general to be much more in line with the Tories than they'd want to admit. Probably not out of any ill will (unlike the Tories), but because you can't grow up in a society drowning in imperialist apologia without integrating it into your world view. If we're talking in terms of conquest and empire rather than European royal slapfights, Morocco has far more of a claim to the rock than Spain does.

You can tell that Brexit is mostly a psychological thing rather than a political thing, because all the Leavers call the Remainers traitors and all the Remainers call the Leavers racists. If it was based on actual politics the Leavers would be calling the Remainers racists for voting to stay in a eurocentric white supremacist gang, and the Remainers would be calling the Leavers traitors for knackering the country.

Sure but if this was being done as an actual serious political project rather than tribalism and Tory grandstanding then the only good reasons to leave were the Bennite ones. There was no argument nor possibility of that though, because there was no left faction even really involved, it was right wing liberals vs. right wing nationalists.
