It's Brexit Day, as finally a Brexit happens!

Now begins the transition period until the clock strikes midnight (CET) at the end of the year, at which point a Super Brexit rises.

Also happening this month is the Labour Leadership Election, from 21/2/2020 to 4/4/2020 :420:.

Currently running for leader are:
Rebecca Long-Bailey

Generally held as leftmost by nominations, and viewed by some as the 'continuity Corbyn candidate'. Momentum supported. Has some Roman Catholic personal views.

Lisa Nandy

Towns candidate for towns and other places that are larger than villages and smaller than cities. From the Labour 'soft left' but some of her associates are a bit Blue Labour.

Emily Thornberry

Sacked by Ed Miliband for taking a picture of a house. First to run after Corbyn said he'd step down, generally in the Corbyn Cabinet Camp.

Keir Starmer

Was the longtime favourite to win. Probable melt/Milibandist.

Deputy leadership candidates:
Dawn Butler
Angela Rayner
Rosena Allin-Khan
Ian Murray
Richard Burgon

In Other News :sax:
• The Northern Ireland Assembly reconvenes after a three year hiatus; Arlene Foster (DUP) is appointed first minister, Michelle O'Neill (SF) deputy first minister.
• Legislation is drafted allowing the use of cameras during trials at Crown Courts in England and Wales, but only the judges will be filmed.
• Construction starts on Dogger Bank Wind Farm, which will become the world's largest offshore wind farm when complete, generating 3.6GW.
• The Prime Minister approves a "non-core" role for Huawei in 5G mobile, resisting US pressure to use equipment that steals data for the CIA rather than the MSS.
• British Airways suspends all flights to and from mainland China with immediate effect, due to the ongoing coronavirus threat.
• Harry and Meghan drop their titles and move to Canada.
• 333 days until Super Brexit.
• Planet's dyin' Cloud.

There is always in February some one day, at least, when one smells the yet distant, but surely coming, summer.

They were abandoned by the historical force of changes in the means of production; actually-existing command economies could not make labour-intensive heavy-industry towns sustainable and neither could the entire developed West in the decade before it turned to neoliberalism.

This distinction matters - Labour in 2020, like every other social democratic party for two generations, has no plan and no ideas for turning back that particular clock. The newdealiest of Green New Deals will not locate labour-intensive heavy industry work in the Bolsovers of England; its work will be neither labour-intensive nor, in the main, heavy. This aspect is well and fine nationally, but do not make for a bright future for small towns, and we all know it; if you were a young man (or woman), you would still emigrate for the cities; nothing in the Labour vision actually reverses that and there is much that encourages it (like... say... mayoral rent control)
What if you don't like cities? I thought the whole idea of the eCommerce revolution was supposed to be that you could do the same job from London or Lubenham. That didn't turn into a reality, but it sounds more feasible than bringing back all the hitting pipes with hammers jobs or smashing the tractors so that the youth can bring in the harvest.

* Of course in a way there is - the GLC, in it's last big fight, keeping London Buses safe from most of the worst effects of deregulation is one of the things that prevented the London suburbs imploding in the same way many of the exurbs did. TfL - the direct descendant of that - is one of the big reasons why London can support any kind of economic activity at all, and even Johnson recognised that, accelerating the nationalisation and in-sourcing of the suburban rail lines (to create the Overground) and tube maintenance respectively that Livingstone started the moment he got back in to control of London's transport.
This is partly why I think municipalism might work where where more, hem, national socialisms have failed.

Who decides what's an imperialist relic?

Ceuta and Melilla fit the standard of imperialist relics, being agreed between France and Spain as part of an imperialist war in Morocco over which Moroccans had little say, far more than Gibraltar, being a product of a treaty between two European colonialist powers.

Spain didn't cede Gibraltar due to being a victim of imperialism, it was part of one of their many royal scuffles that they writ over Europe. They did gain Ceuta and Melilla due to perpetrating imperialism though.

There can't be any discussion about the status of Gibraltar until Ceuta and Melilla are returned. Hell, offer Morocco Jabal Tariq too.

Are you really trying to compare something like the Tories refusal to cede the BIOT back to the Chagossians with not wanting to cede territory to someone who conquered it by genocide where 98.9% of the residents don't want to be returned to the prior genocidal conquerors?

I'm not sure about the depth of her Blue Labour links. They've recommended her a couple of times, which is a worry, but it could mean anything from "she's a post-liberal who isn't Corbyn" to "she's a fash sympathizer". That all hinges on whether her appeal to small towns bit really means "we should be bringing utilities and community and municipalism back to small towns, and undo the metropolitan centralism of the past decades" or "cricket and racism".

goddamnedtwisto posted:

Nandy's making the right noises in the hustings but is still the furthest-right of the contenders. Starmer is such a loving cypher though, he's literally not committed to anything at all at any point in the process and the fact that he's even vaguely close to the lead is Tall White Male privilege in action because those are the only three things that you can say are definitely the case about him.
Yeah Starmer winning is just a straight rejection of Corbyn as a youthful mistake by the membership and now we're back to sensible adult politics which means making sad noises about Brexit and having aspirations rather than policies or some shite.

crispix posted:

I do wonder what Starmer has seen to cause him to have the exact same look of dead-eyed horror on his face no matter where he is or what he's saying.
Anything approaching the change that came over his features I have never seen before, and hope never to see again. Oh, I wasn't touched. I was fascinated. It was as though a veil had been rent. I saw on that ivory face the expression of sombre pride, of ruthless power, of craven terror—of an intense and hopeless despair. Did he live his life again in every detail of desire, temptation, and surrender during that supreme moment of complete knowledge? He cried in a whisper at some image, at some vision—he cried out twice, a cry that was no more than a breath:

"The voters! The voters!"
