The history I learned in high school was almost entirely focused on Britain in the 19th and 20th century and the Empire was mentioned exactly once, briefly, to give context for German imperialism in the run up to WW1

I'm finding the destruction of statues very educational. I never before thought about who was on that huge plinth in St Andrews Square in Edinburgh and it turns out it's a tory called Henry Dundas who is best known for delaying slavery abolition by ~15 years and being impeached for embezzling public money. :killdozer:

one part of the UK I don’t understand is Scotland. Like I understand there are a multitude of pros/cons for cessation and it’s not super black & white, but how come every time a Scottish politician stands up and asks England for something everyone laughs at the Scot and tells them to get hosed?

what does Scotland get out of this? is it just an entire country of fetish subs who love having their nuts stomped on?

Cultural inferiority complex ("Scottish Cringe") is probably part of it. Plus the status quo seemed safe and stable. Now chaos reigns.

Those who want to keep the UK together need to respond with new, powerful arguments against separation. After all, hasn’t the EU negotiations shown Scots that the whip hand lies with the larger, more powerful bloc? [...] But there’s a problem: this Brexiteer premier can’t say any of this. So what’s the second plan? Simple. Refuse to hold a referendum. It’s the only sure way you won’t lose one. Yes, the SNP will be in full cry — but so what? [...]Ask the jailed Catalonian leaders how their illegal poll worked out.

I've heard it said that the additional member system was chosen for Holyrood to keep the SNP from getting a majority, but why choose a system that can be gamed if independence is your priority by voting smaller indy parties in the list? What's the advantage over, say, STV?
And why has there been so little effort to encourage that gaming? Obviously the SNP leadership have a duty to their list candidates and won't tell you to vote for someone else, but I'd have thought there'd be more of a grassroots campaign to do that
