PS2 best game: Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
SNES best: Seiken Densetsu 3

both beautiful with great writing and gameplay and afaik neither is on PC without emulators

considering the secret of mana remake got mediocre to bad reviews and came with a $40 price tag it doesn't build a lot of confidence

I don't want a remake because no modern graphics can outshine its sprites. Easily the peak of that artform.

Have you played the total mod conversions X-Piratez and/or X-COM Files? I have put too many hours into both of them and they're really well done.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux

As much as I dearly love the SMT series and its old-school dungeon crawling, be warned that the maps in this game actively hate you and want you to die. The Redux version adds some new plot stuff (i haven't played through it all yet, so my memories are of the original DS version) but as far as I know they left the dungeon maps alone so take this one only if you're in the mood for some really sadistic dungeon crawling.
