I took the Fit to my buddy's shop to get it up on a lift for diagnosis of the loose steering. Figured it might be inner tie rod ends.

Fuckin' nope. It's the goddamn rack. Gots a big ol' dead spot in the middle. Turn the wheels left or right a bit and everything is nice and tight, but the middle gives me like 2-3mm of play at the tie rods. If it was loose all over I could tighten up the adjusting nut, but with the play being localized to the center I feel like that would give me tight steering in the middle and binding everywhere else.

Honda wants just under $1100 for a new rack and just under $300 for the electric power steering motor :shepspends:

I love the car and I'm almost willing to pay it but with the age I think I'm just going to source a used rack, hopefully from a car that hasn't been absolutely beat to poo poo like mine.

I just checked car-part, and there's one with the pump for my '07 Fit at a JY 45 minutes away for $70. I think you'll be fine with a JY rack.

Yeah I found one same year online for like $110. Ordinarily with Honda I'm a big fan of new OEM, but in this case (and the case of my CR-V's driveshaft) Honda can kick rocks.

JY low miles is the way to go. So many replacement parts have sky-high pricing because they're either stored for years (which aint free), or are low-run manufactured. Just get one with a warranty and check it out early.

CarMax doesn't to my knowledge, that's the thing Carvana has going for it. We sold my mom's Soul to them for more than I was asking on Craigslist, they're picking it up on Tuesday.

They bought my mom's Kia Soul for more than KBB. Picked it up today in fact... Easiest sale I've ever done.

Carvana is all VC money. Get it while you can.

That's what I told my mom. They don't need to turn a profit, just build the brand and be "disrupting". I'll gladly take their money.

Thanks for the insights. My initial post was really vague but that is because I don't have the time to type out my entire guts and even think anyone would be willing to read through it all.

Basically I have always worked for "small businesses". So I am fortunate that I have been able to see how stuff works end to end. I have had employers who have just basically told me they pay me to make decisions, so go ahead and make decisions. I can definitively point to things and say "This was something I decided to do and it moved the needle X, for good or bad". I have a business concept in mind, and understand that this isn't something I would be striking out to do for at least a year plus but it is an idea. I am fortunate to have some good things going for me, I am pretty young (35) and I am not broke financially. Between cash savings and equity in our home there is a good number there. The plan would be moving out of the Salt Lake Valley down to Southern Utah where real estate is quite a bit less. I am considering making the investment into specialty equipment that can provide specific services. Preliminary stuff has shown that I could get into the machinery without taking any loans, etc. I would need to find some good commercial real estate, but I think I could make a go at this thing. I know it would be rough, starting with a goose egg as far as customers, but I can build it up. I have always told my wife I am happy to not be the head of the business because that guy goes to sleep with way too much on his pillow. Life has a weird way of nudging you towards other things though.
