Not a Dickman, just a shape
I recently watched Vanilla ice's "Cool as ice" and was pleasently suprised by the camera work and general vibe the film had going on. Far from being a slapped together star vehicle , it is plain to see that effort and talent went into the creation of this film. This juxtaposition between incredibley competent camerawork and staging and vanilla ice's "b-kool" attitude is an enjoyable one.

This film almost sort of works at times as a samurai ronin type film transplanted into the 90s with hyper colour motorcycles

I wonder why that is...

oh....

so enjoy some kool moments from the movie that I scrubbed

I havn't got inline linking to gifs sorted yet so you may need to click through i'm sorry, but I implore you to see some of these

The lighting and relative long shot nature of this (there is a significantly more before and after this clip) and the motorcycle mount is actually kinda cool(?)

Ice's friends are goofy enough to be entertaining and their sequences are surreal enough to break up the pace

This is a scene where a sister realises here brother isnt where he should be, she comes home and the NES is on but he isnt there, the slow nature of it , the environmental story telling and how the moment of realisation is dont with the drop of some papers is really good ( and in a movie with vanilla ice)

I included this one because of how it sets the scene and afte the inital set up creates negative space that is then filled with diagetic light to both secondarily establish that

so, films that have one good element or suprised you inspite of themselves thread here I guess?

A friendly little mouse!
I think it's really funny that is opening music video is the Spielberg look and Kaminski photographed Schindler's list after this and has been a Spielberg regular ever since.

But why? Why would Spielberg hire a relative unknown after a poorly written cash grab star vehicle? Or did Steven really enjoy the fresh rhymes of Vanilla Ice so much that he watched Cool as Ice and saw the talent where it was? :iiam:

What a weird career arc Kaminski went on lol.

His previous credits were... *looks it up* ... The Terror Within II, The Rain Killer, and Grim Prairie Tales, which all look like garbage grade horror movies. So that doesn't help solve the mystery at all!

I've wondered about this myself, especially because a while back I noticed that the two films Spielberg did right before hooking up with Kamiski were both shot by Dean Cundey. Cundey is an outstanding cinematographer with a serious resume and one of the two films he shot for Spielberg was Jurassic Park so what's the problem? Why not stick with Cundey?

Maybe Spielberg was just sick of having to work with cinematographers who were already established and were in high demand so scheduling became an aggravation. Kaminski was a guy he could take under his wing and never have to worry about him not being available for the next Spielberg production.

It's more enjoyable if you think about it as a rap parody rather than a real rap song.

And the only reason I've seen this movie is because of Rifftrax.

I found it enjoyable if you view Vanilla ice as an idiot bhudda and asking deep questions like "why *isn't* she into me now"

"What does it mean to be bad?"

OP I really liked the shots for the insane house construction scene as well. The weird as hell brief sequence of making a truly disgusting sandwich also has excellent framing for what is a really, really really dumb scene in concept

Kamiński is not some rando, and never was. He graduated from the Łódź film school, which is kinda a big deal if you’re into artsy cinematography and rapist pedofile movie directors. The man needed money as a poor emigre, but I doubt this film had any bearing on Spielberg’s decision, considering his pedigree.

Compared to Cundey he was though. I feel like there must've been some sort of scheduling conflict with Cundey that opened the door for Kaminski and then he and Spielberg must've just hit it off.

you're probably not super far off, but i feel like it's less that Spielberg was a huge Vanilla Ice fan or anything, and more that if you're a big industry guy you just kind of end up seeing everything that makes it to wide release or gets buzz in limited

Grim Prairie Tales is legit, a horror western anthology where the framing story is eccentric bounty hunter James Earl Jones and cynical city slicker Brad Dourif exchanging tales around a campfire.

There are a couple nice plot points in the movie too

Like , ice's musical ability now what saves the day with identifying the location of the kidnappers (via a veiled sexual reference)

And that ice spends ages teaching Kat how to ride a motorcycle lets them bring the goon home on the bonnet of the car

Spielberg also has, more or less since JURASSIC PARK, worked with the same crew of people which is why he shoots relatively fast and typically is why he tends to shoot stuff back to back.
