WHAT IS STARBASE? Starbase is being developed by Frozenbyte, who you might know as the folks that built Trine. Starbase is an MMO with gameplay focused on building and designing spaceships and stations, exploration, resource gathering, crafting, trading, and combat. The game features a fully destructible environment and a multitude of fine-detailed simulations that allow you, the players, the ultimate freedom to conquer space and unleash your creativity. Key features: * Destructible environment with voxel and fracture damage and in-depth simulation * Play and interact online with thousands of players, join factions, and more * Build and design your spaceships, stations, and devices down to the tiniest detail * Explore the infinite universe and gather resources * Program complex interactions with a very constrained ingame scripting language * Get banned from their discord by simply saying "Computer"! It appears that Frozenbyte has absolutely no idea how to run a MMO game so it'll be open season. But I still have questions! Perfect, check out this google doc, which has a lot more info: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jW4ic1piFnRB0jJcoXeRNYvpREaCKMSCEmLvCqB-7mw/edit Look at this sweet voxel destruction: What does the combat look like? Take a look at this dev test battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYp_VXfFoyA Screenshots: When is Strarbase launching? Starbase is currently unreleased and in development. Closed Alpha will begin Monday, May 11th. They will follow that with an Early Access release, where the game will If you want into the Closed Alpha, they released a survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1A09u3huSRkRxoA6IqcdyOi3yH7YBiybJEsHVceWbUmY Will goons be playing? Yes! Check the discord link here: https://discord.gg/uHyyaM8 This game appears to reward group play and contributions, similar to ATLAS, Worlds Adrift, and others. Join us to organize the best and most creative way to get muted on the official discord for saying "Computer". RocketRaygun fucked around with this message at 05:24 on Oct 26, 2021 |

Remember guys, never not ram. If we aren't destroying pubbies intricately designed ships that took days to build, with shoddily-crafted dick ships, we're doing it wrong. edit: Computer Turkina_Prime fucked around with this message at 01:51 on Feb 5, 2020 |

Goa Tse-tung posted:why are they banning for saying computer? because computer (a good number of goons are muted on the official starbase discord because they have said computer once. It makes some of their volunteer mods very mad. Also, it was the top vote for the name of the planet and they ignored it)

Is that the origin of their hatred for computer, the forbidden name of the planet? or do they just have an unexplained bias against computer?

Just a goon (Ryan from Huston) said it a few times over a few days, and the volunteer mods freaked the gently caress out. The origin story is really simple and that's why it's so funny.

That is definitely not a rational action. It's a good sign for goon shenanigans though. I'll be watching.

Khorne posted:Looks neat to at least try from the videos. They think that the best way to deal with people who make swastika ships is to put a public bounty on the ships to get players to destroy them. This game is going to be a disaster before we get into netcode. And we are going to ride that disaster all the way into the ground

Based on interviews I've listened to, they're extremely naive about how PU online games function and think everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows, with the exception of the CEO who plays Eve Online, so he has some level of understanding how toxic these game can get. My biggest concern however, is that they're completely underestimating how vulnerable their game is going to be to cheaters and hackers.

good luck harming pubbies for the probably short amount of time it lasts Frozenbyte is like 2 for 10 on good games historically but I ain't gonna assume here

Trine is an okay 2d side scroller. That experience barely translates to internet spaceships but ya never know.

Maybe they're banking on a 60 dollar price tag to make cheating too expensive to bother with. Like you can cheat a couple of times, but then you'll get banned and you'll be out 60 dollars. Though that doesn't offer much consolation when the hacker blows up a fleet that people spent hundreds of hours on. There could also be a ton of ways to cheat that aren't completely obvious to everyone else, like duplicating materials without anyone noticing. I guess we can only hope that the game is more like Gmod Spacebuild than EVE Online when it comes to people taking it seriously

Like you can cheat a couple of times, but then you'll get banned and you'll be out 60 dollars. I've only seen that work on a couple of occasions, one being with Overwatch where Blizzard banned both the IP and the individual parts in someone's computer so they would have to buy, essentially, a whole new computer if they wanted to sneak back in.

Strictly cost of purchase concerns will never really curb cheating, because there will always be people out there who value ruining someone else's game over the cost. They'll get a few hours of enjoyment out of it and then buy another copy and do it again. Doubly so in the case of buy to play because they just buy bulk greymarket keys well below retail cost.

If you try talking to the CEO you'll find he's pretty naive too. They really have no idea what they're getting into making a PvP MMO.

There could also be a ton of ways to cheat that aren't completely obvious to everyone else, like duplicating materials without anyone noticing. One of the best deterrents to cheating is having a hefty price-tag, getting a basic anti-cheat service (EAC/Battleye), and having (at least) several people actually investigating manual reports. The first scares away 80%+ of would be cheaters, the second deters 80%+ of those remaining cheaters, and the last one gets rid of 95%+ of people who aren't capable of subtlety, making only the most subtle of cheaters able to exist and giving the illusion that there are zero in the game's universe.
