 Having followed the game since closed alpha (though not as much recently), they clearly fell behind their announced development schedule after Early Access release, and as a result weren't able to implement the upcoming major features that were supposed to drive player interest in a timely fashion. In retrospect, the rushed Early Access launch (e.g. Easy Build Mode, which was made a key part of new player onboarding, was never tested in closed alpha and launched broken) was also a bad sign as regards to funding.
