It's true and I'm tired of pretending it isn't
I've done this a few times, like today at Wendy's:

quote:

Me: "I'd like a number two combo, with a Baconator, Biggie sized"
: "Did you want the Baconator, or the Son of Baconator?"
(granted this is confusing that there are two items offered in the same combo)
Me: "...I'll have the Baconator, Biggie sized"
:confused:: "Small, Medium, or Large?"
Me: "...Um, I suppose I'll have the Large?"
: "And what would you like to drink?"
Me: "I'll have the Dave's Strawberry Citrus"
(silence for about 10 seconds)
Me: "...or a Dr. Pepper if that's not available, I guess"
: "Oh it is I'm just not good at taking orders"
Wife: "And I'll get the chicken sandwich combo, large"
: (something completely different from what she ordered)
Me: (to wife, waving hands frantically, whispered): "ABORT! ABORT!"
Me: "I'm sorry... I have to go" (drives off)

Two reasons I bailed:
1. If ordering is this bad, how bad are things in the kitchen?
2. If I'm the slightest bit unpleasant toward the employee, perhaps in my tone, they could spit in my food or worse.

I've done this about five times in my life. I get that working in fast food is nobody's dream job and I treat the employees kindly and with respect, but if I get a bad feeling I am out of there.

No, but because of sunk costs I once spent about 35 minutes at a Taco Bell drive thru. I have no idea what was going on inside, but I did get food eventually.

We're fucking built for this shit!
Wait, is there an implication here that somehow the employee is at fault for being confused by you asking for a Biggie size when that hasn't existed in like 20 years? Seriously, the teenager you're giving your order to likely didn't co-exist with the Biggie size at any point in time.

my friend and i once ordered mcflurries late at night and didn't know which window the guy told us to pull around to. we sat at the first one for a bit, then the second one, but then we got all anxious so we drove off to the other mcdonalds that's right across the highway and got our mcflurries there.

My local Taco Bell always takes forever, and people used to pull out of the line to leave if they were waiting 20+ minutes which happens regularly

It's still that way except now there's a curb with landscaping so you can't escape the line

This is wonderful when you pull up to the speaker and they tell you they're out of beef or the credit card machine is broken and you still have to wait for the people ahead of you

I had to wait 40+ minutes in the taco bell drive-thru line late night one time. the line was out onto the street, the inside wasn't open, and we had already ordered online and paid. there's no way I would have waited otherwise, it was lovely and so was the food that night

I did this today although I usually don't. I tried to go to Arby's and they were out of some type of buns, and the guy in front of me was there for like 10 minutes, and kept getting in and out of the car and handing people things through the window (receipts, food? Not sure. It was taking forever to wrap up, whatever it was.) I didn't see anything good coming out of that trip so I bailed.

any time i've considered leaving, i've been trapped. i just repeat to myself "maybe it's their first day" and try and be as politely stern as possible at the window to get free food.

You're not wrong it's out of date but at the same time Wendy's should provide training to help employees mentally equate biggie sized to large because there are definitely enough garbage rear end gen x and boomers like me and OP in the world who will say poo poo like that until we die

If I can leave and they mess up several times I bail.

I was drunk and walking home (well, back to a hotel) once and tried to walk through a wendy's drive thru (the counter was closed it was drive thru only hours) and the refused to serve me because I wasn't in a car.

I'm ashamed to say I didn't bail after ten+ minutes in a subway drive thru the other evening. One person there and of course two people ordered in person just before my own order went in. But dammit, I'd been on the go all day without food and my only other options were gas station or McDonald's, which is a large gamble post-9pm.

I've so wanted to. I have definitely walked in, gotten in line, seen someone start ordering 5 subs from a list, and walked out.

Subway's biggest problem is Subway customers.

I actually can't wrap my head around a drive thru subway. Like you're already dancing on a knife's edge when you can directly puppet the maker of the sandwich in full view. I can't imagine what comes out when you yell an order into a tiny speaker and hope for the best.

I never went to one before they upgraded, but they have digital order screens now that pretty much let you put anything you want together. Food quality aside they're the best place to order from, and I wish everyone else would get on board.

We used to do it all the time. Here a lot of places used to close indoor service after a certain time, but have a 24hr drive though.

The trick, if youre in a group, is to stand in a square shape 2-2 or 2-3 pattern like youre actual car passengers and one person mime using a steering wheel.

I had that happen and was so drunk I responded by getting angry and vomiting, didn't break eye contact with the night manager though.

And another thing, what is with people sitting too far back in line so you can't order? Happened tonight at, oddly enough, another Wendy's. The kid ahead of me was like 1.5 car lengths behind the person at the window and refused to budge even after a polite honk. So of course the people sitting behind me are just waiting for him to move up so they can even order. The dogfucker.

I've never had to wait a crazy amount of time at a drive-thru, maybe 15 minutes tops, and that's extremely rare. The last time it happened the wonderful girl at the taco bell window put a bunch of extras with my order so it was worth it. I've actually had worse luck inside the restaurants. Popeye's is usually slow around here but the worst thing i ever experienced in terms of wait time was a terribly understaffed burger king at a rest stop after an important yankee-red Sox night game late in the season. There were 3 people in the entire place trying to deal with about 150 drunks. Those poor bastards. That was easily an hour wait

I like cookies.
Steak n Shake. The one I used to go to was always a guaranteed 20+ minutes in the drive thru, even if it's literally just you and one other car. Presumably this was because dine in orders were given priority on the grill, but at that point why bother having the drive thru open?

It was also the only late night restaurant in the area and right next to the light rail terminal, so good loving luck ever getting food friday/saturday late night.

I did once, in the aforementioned Taco Bell drive through. I would legit get revenge if they trapped you in there in some way.

I also bail at my local subway whenever I see it's the Israeli owner making sandwiches instead of the normal awesome girl. Awkward if you make eye contact first, but I fully accept my gooniness.

I've done this. The guy didn't greet me which was not a biggie if that was all, but he was more focused on the girl in the line ahead of me than making my sammich. What made me bail was that I ordered a tuna sub, and this guy starts scraping the dry crusty tuna out of the bottom of the bin with his scoop while continuing to flirt with the girl. I just walked out and didn't say anything.

Hell no, because one time my dad and I managed to confuse and disrupt a drive-thru order so badly that eventually 2 different teams of people brought out two instances of the same big rear end order at Taco Bell for the price of one and we ate like gods. Persevere, amigos.
