The guidelines the CDC gave to the hospitals is not what they put out in the news. The hospitals did not go out of their way to buy proper PPE when they saw this coming because of it.

My knowledge of this is not some 5th hand bullshit or conspiracy nonsense. Up until the Kaiser nurses had a massive protest in the bay area the official stance was you do not need masks and gowns for every patient, and we will not accept donations of PPE nor can you use your own PPE.

My wife has been working with people doing donations from overseas to get critically needed PPE to the hospitals that need it. In addition to working long as hell hours at her own hospital.

I saw some of those stories about the nurses working for Kaiser. It's interesting how different areas are handling this. My area led off with, "send us your stuff, we are going to need everything we can get our hands on." Queue all the neighborhoods setting up sweatshops to make masks and 3d printers making face shield holders.

Other areas seem to be firmly in the camp of, "gently caress you, all of you can die"

I am outraged at capital and politics, and it keeps surprising me at how much more I can muster on top of what has already been building

On one hand I can't see how healthcare workers and EMTs are going to get paid what they are owed without a strike, and on the other I can understand why the people who work in healthcare are not the sort of people to put themselves over the people they help which means a strike really can't happen.

I'd gravitate towards this stance personally. In commercial diving it is ultimately up to the diver (not the boss) to make the call on sketchy conditions or unsafe developments. Why no, I do not want to put anyone in the water during a 50-yr flood event with a dynamic mooring set-up. I'm sorry you told the client we could do it, but that was bullshit.

E: I get some of the reasons why healthcare is different... It's an awful position to be put in as a frontline worker

Based on some interviews I've been hearing from people that work in ERs it sounds like if that was your standard then you wouldn't be a medical worker in the US.

Not happening. The CARES act (the $2t/$6t bill) authorized the Postal Service to get a loan of $10B from the National Reserve to keep on operating. That will make the USPS operational until Congress comes back and fixes it long-term.

The postal service is a heavy, heavy need for rural communities, as the private shippers don't make much money there (I think). Conservatives yell a lot about the USPS not having a good business model, but they won't let the USPS outright shut down. Nobody else would take up those rural routes.

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2020/03/31/mcconnell-impeachment-diverted-attention-from-coronavirus-concerns/23966488/

quote:

enate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Tuesday suggested that the January Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump distracted from crucial early efforts to respond to the emerging coronavirus pandemic.

During an appearance on conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt's radio show, McConnell was asked about a POLITICO article published Monday that pointed to Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., as one of the first people on Capitol Hill to sound warnings on coronavirus. The article quoted Cotton as blaming impeachment for diverting the government's focus away from the threats.

When asked about Cotton's early warnings, McConnell said: "It came up while we were tied down on the impeachment trial. And I think it diverted the attention of the government, because everything every day was all about impeachment."

McConnell also praised his Senate colleagues from pivoting “from the most partisan thing you could possibly be involved in, the impeachment of a president, to a unanimous vote on a $2 trillion dollar package all within a couple of months.”

McConnell also said he would look at any future coronavirus response bill produced by the House majority "like Reagan suggested we look at the Russians — trust, but verify."

"I’m not going to allow this to be an opportunity for the Democrats to achieve unrelated policy items that they would not otherwise be able to pass," McConnell said.

The Senate leader also accused Democrats of wanting to "turn the President’s handling of all this into a political liability for him."

He's doing the same thing he yelled at Cuomo about. We have no idea where, exactly the ventilators will do the most good, so it makes sense to hold back some *for now*. Cuomo has a few thousand in reserve, the problem is that he (and us) need a few hundred thousand in reserve.

Remember, Trump is barely doing ANYTHING in this whole thing. He's watching Fox News, talking to randos on the phone, and demanding random praise from Governors (while Pence actually does the stuff). He's trying to *look* busy.

He's also furiously delegating everything to everyone else and dancing like a ballerina around having to make any actual decisions so he always has a few good scapegoats around for everything that goes wrong. Ego preservation is one of the single most important things to him as a malignant narcissist, if other people don't further that goal they either don't exist or are enemies that must have every single thing used to attack them full force at all times and drat the consequences.

Moscow Mitch, realizing trying to defend the GOP administration's Covid-19 response is a losing battle, now decides to blame the Dem impeachment for the slow response.

So while totally distracted by impeachment, to the point that he couldn't do his job at all, Trump held rallies on:
1/9
1/14
1/28
1/30

He golfed on:
1/18
1/19
2/1

After his acquittal, he held more rallies on:
2/10
2/19
2/20
2/21
2/28

and golfed on:
2/15
3/7
3/8 (the date of the "I'm not worried about it" comment)

It goes without saying that every single rally was a public health hazard that likely infected hundreds of people.

As an aside, it was in February that Burr/Inhofe/Loeffler/Feinstein sold their stocks after a Covid-19 briefing.
