So apparently the local Costco is sold out of toilet paper, bottled water and tylenol. And bleach is hard to come by at the local grocery stores.

I'd like to mention that I've got TWO bottles of bleach now motherfuckers (because I went to the store a week ago and through sheer coincidence bought bleach, hand sanitizer and toilet paper). I bought another one today though to have something to barter with when the trade caravans come by.

I suppose this is a current event. Reading the information on Covid-19 Age/Sex/Existing Conditions as a 30-39 year old my chances of dying from this (based on current estimates which I know may be wrong) is .2%. But by pre-existing conditions, if I have hypertension (and nothing else wrong with me) that number jumps to 6%. Am I reading this right, because 6% is a bit uncomfortable. Number based on this link, which I know is a few days out of date: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/

shame on an IGA posted:That's not super useful without full crosstabs of age+comorbidity, it's probably less "hypertension makes you more likely to eat poo poo and die" and more "being old makes you eat poo poo and die and olds are majorly overrepresented in the hypertension bucket" That's what I was hoping/figuring but I had a mild panic moment there

Notahippie posted:The deep gnawing fear I have that this primary is feeding is that this is the majority of the Democratic party, to say nothing of America as a whole. I'm in my 40's and up to Obama literally every president elected in my life had a "gently caress the poor" plank in their platform. I don't think the median Democrat wants a progressive candidate, and I don't know what to do about it. I guess the options are organizing at the local level and letting the national level just continue to get worse and worse until people come around but that feels like giving up. I really think it has to start from the ground up. People need to understand and be reconditioned at the local and state level to think that yes, things really can get better. Then once more progressives get into power you have a primary where the progressive voltron drops out and endorses the progressive frontrunner, not the situation we're in now. Although I also think this needed to start 30 years ago at minimum. e: At this point the goal of getting Biden into the white house is less about making things better and more about harm reduction.

An earlier post discussed that patients with COVID-19 are not dying from acute respiratory failure, but instead are dying from sudden cardiac arrest. That seems to be absolutely correct. No one knows if this is some type of cardiomyopathy caused by the virus or a cytokine storm leading to heart failure. Either way that is frightening.

I wikipedia inaccurate on this, because while it's of course not a miracle drug like Fox is pushing it does seem promising: Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine have been recommended by Chinese and South Korean health authorities for the treatment COVID-19.[31] [32] In vitro studies have demonstrated that hydroxychloroquine is more potent than chloroquine against SARS-CoV-2 with a more tolerable safety profile.[33] On 16 March 2020, advisor to the French Government on COVID-19, Professor Didier Raoult, announced that a non-randomized unblinded trial[34] involving 24 people from the south east of France supported the claim that hydroxychloroquine was an effective treatment for COVID-19.[35] The trial is yet to be peer-reviewed.[34] An amount of 600 mg of hydroxychloroquine was administered to these people every day for 10 days. They reported "a significant decrease in viral load".[34] The drug appeared to be responsible for a "rapid and effective speeding up of their healing process, and a sharp decrease in the amount of time they remained contagious".[36] The antibiotic azithromycin - which is known to be effective against secondary infections from bacterial lung disease - led to even better outcomes. Professor Raoult said the results showed there was "a spectacular reduction in the number of positive cases" with the combination therapy. At 6 days, among patients given combination therapy, the percentage of cases still carrying SARS-CoV-2 was no more than 5%.[37][38] On March 17 after testing in several hospitals around Italy the Italian Pharmaceutical Agency has included hydroxychloroquine in the list of drugs with positive preliminary results for treatment of coronavirus disease 2019.[39]

Federal and state-level regulations mandate everything: the location of handwashing sinks, the type of soap used in them, the frequency of work-surface sanitization, " lmao at that. They can mandate all the locations in the world but there isn't an inspector standing there at all times (or generally any) watching to make sure people follow the guidelines, and that includes your cooks, servers, bartenders, whatever.
