South Carolina, a state which Bernie lost should not count, but Texas, a state which Bernie will probably will win, should count despite being the exact same PVI for the following reasons and furthermore,,,,

honestly the only states allowed to vote in a democratic primary should be states who voted for the Democratic Party at least once in the last three election cycles and which were within 5% either way last time

this is a bad night obviously. but voter turnout is up everywhere. it’s huge. and it’s going hard for Biden. it’s not young people showing up to vote, it’s older suburbanites. it’s not just anti-bernie, either— Cisneros losing is a blow.

as hard as it is to believe, this is what the Democratic Party wants. that’ll change over time, but right now half of the boomers haven’t even reached retirement age yet. these people are super conservative and they vote like it’s their job.

maybe more attention on Biden’s atrocious record and melting brain will help, but we have to also consider the possibility that a huge portion of the dem base is just really conservative and wants conservative policy. it loving sucks.

Also that revolutionary messaging is extremely ineffective on these voters and actually galvanises them to vote against you.

There's been a couple elections now that show you can't just message for your own radical crowd, tell everyone else to gently caress off or bend the knee, then hope ground game and canvassing overcomes the entrenched interests against you.

I don’t think this is quite it. I think what we’re seeing is a logical extension of 2018, when Dems made huge gains in the House based on flipping suburbs.

basically: lots of normies hate trump. hate him. they want him out. they’re voting for biden based purely on the idea that he’ll beat trump. the media is certainly responsible for this as they’ve been pushing the electability argument and scaremongering about sanders’s lack thereof. but Biden is promising a return to normalcy and a non-hosed era of politics, and that’s enough for lots of people. that is, in fact, all they want.

so you get massive turnout spikes from
suburbanites terrified of trump and hoping to get him out, but that translates into good numbers for Biden instead of sanders. I don’t think this is a result of sanders’s messaging being a turnoff, I think people like it fine, but what’s driving them to the polls is fear of trump and that’s sending them towards Biden.

people live a long time. i think there are still way, way too many boomers among the dem primary electorate, whose chief political motivation is fear. remember, the oldest boomers are 75-- they're starting to die, but not very quickly yet. as long as this cohort is still around, they're going to be an airbrake on any kind of progress.

I mean we can talk about the establishment and media’s obvious hatred for Bernie, and it is a factor, but we need to stop thinking of the democratic base as temporarily
embarrassed socialists. the base is very old and old people are very conservative— not necessarily in the sense of supporting right wing policy (though sometimes that) but more just scared, risk-averse, and preferring the comfortable and familiar over the new and different.

the democratic base is fissures even harder than the Republican base. young people reject neoliberalism as hard as old people reject social democracy.

He's not. There's not much reason to think most Warren voters would have voted for Bernie over Biden. In fact, the opposite is far more likely.

depends on the state. she’d probably put him over the top in mass and Maine, but hurt him in Virginia. Minnesota could go either way
