Impressive that Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic not only had a back-to-back winner, but a back to back runner-up: 2019 1. WWE CONTINUING TO DO BUSINESS IN SAUDI ARABIA 920 2. UFC/USADA handling of Jon Jones 21 2018 1. WWE BUSINESS TIES WITH SAUDI ARABIA 901 2. USADA handling of the Jon Jones case 97 These also seem to be the record holders for the biggest gaps between 1st and 2nd, though "WWE exploiting Reid Fleihr's death", "WWE exploiting Jerry Lawler's heart attack" and "WWE exploiting Eddie Guerrero's death" all were blowaway winners too. Also noteworthy, with his placement on both the Best/Worst Gimmicks of the year, The Fiend Bray Wyatt joins the following luminaries as placing on both lists in the same year: The Black Scorpion, Razor Ramon, Doink the Clown, Goldust, Disco Inferno, New World Order (x2), Kane, Sting, Dude Love, Degeneration X, Al Snow, Godfather, Curry Man, Kurt Angle, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Hurricane, Charlie Hass, Santino, Zack Ryder, Joseph Park, Fandango, Mojo Rawley, Broken Hardyz, and Elias. Some of these surprised me for placing on the 'best' list, some for the 'worst'. My favorite was definitely Steve Austin, who in 2001 placed as: Best Gimmick #2 Steve Austin ("What") #4 Steve Austin (Paranoid Heel) Worst Gimmick #8 Steve Austin (Whiny Pussy) 2001 is also the year that DDP got #1 and #2 in the worst gimmick category, with "DDP Bob Patterson Gimmick" and "DDP Stalker" taking the two top slots. The only person to come close to that was 1999's #1 Worst Gimmick "That 70s Guy Mike Awesome" and #3 "Fat Chick Thriller Mike Awesome", who lost the two spot to The Dog by only six votes. So AEW with wrestler of the year, top two tag teams of the year, top four promo guys, best weekly TV show, top two US/Canada MVPs, best box office draw, top two most charismatic guys, rookie of the year, best major wrestling show, and the promoter of the year. And for the stuff it didn't totally win, it got #2 promotion of the year behind NJPW, third best match of the year, second and third best feuds of the year, second best flyer, second best announcer. Not bad for a t-shirt company

I’m glad for my boy Spicy Karl getting the #2 rookie spot, and not with a giant dropoff like many categories had The one result I’m confused and mad about is Pieter getting more non-wrestler points than Miho. Miho is fuckin #1 non-wrestler in NJPW alongside maybe Red Shoes, what the gently caress

I see your point but to me it’s a lot like if you’d voted for Stephen Amell as rookie of the year for that shockingly good performance at Summerslam 2015.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying too. Cain was pushed as a bigger draw than anyone else on that list and delivered, though. I’ll try to remember to link to those AAA matches, because they were astonishing at the time. I think Save compared it to how natural Angle was as a rookie, and it wasn’t completely off base.

Jungle Boy winning best rookie when he's been wrestling since 2018 at least is funny imo

A baseball player who wins Rookie of the Year is in fact not in his first year playing professional baseball. Someone who is working a lot of matches on the indies will sometimes get votes, but someone who signs a contract for the first time and debuts before September is generally eligible. Cain's matches kicked rear end and he would have deserved ROY if he stayed in AAA. They didn't just kick rear end he showed notable improvement in his second match. Nyla Rose, Kris Statlander, and Marko Stunt are people I'd consider a rookie too. It's kind of subjective, but I'd consider a rookie to be someone who's been wrestling 1-4 years and hasn't either been on top of a major indie, or hasn't had a debut in a major promotion. I guess it's also a fine line between "Breakout Year" and "Rookie of the Year"
