Toribash's loosy-goosy physics reminds me of some other ragdoll physics classics, the DIsmount series (Stair Dismount, Truck Dismount, etc.)

https://jet.ro/dismount/

It's hard to figure out whether these are games or sandbox toys, but essentially you have a ragdoll and exactly one push vector, and want to do as much damage to the poor sap as possible.

I don't need to know anything about virii! My CUSTOM PROGRAM keeps me protected! It's not like they'll try to come in through the Internet or something!
Has there been any kind of a game with a similar concept to Toribash but with the controls not being deliberately a giant pain in the rear end?

It's a genre I keep being a bit tempted to make. I realize it's hard, because turning the player's expressed intent into actual physics that can work isn't easy (like "I want the fist to go here" probably involves running a complicated set of inverse kinematics to make that happen without also falling over backwards), and collecting the player's intent coherently is also not a super easy task (I have a good mental model for that part though). But it seems like a fun game could be made of it. Conceptually kind of similar to Superhot, but with flexible physics rather than FPS-rules physics.

Great.

Black Shades, by the developer of Lugaru, is a weird and good FPS escort mission generator-thing. You're a psychic bodyguard in a randomly generated city filled with pedestrians, with a person in white to protect from assassination. If you kill an innocent or your charge dies, you fail. Here are some things that are possible in this quick game:
  • you project your consciousness a block ahead and identify assassins before they give themselves away.
  • weaponless, you go into slo-mo, wrestle a pistol away from an assassin, shoot him in the head as he lies on the ground, and kill three other would-be assassins
  • you peacefully disarm an assassin and let him go
  • you lose track of your charge and he gets shivved
  • you throw away your sniper rifle, steal a knife from an assassin, and run around knifing bad guys
  • your charge is bitten by a zombie and dies'
  • you shoot your charge out of irritation at his aloofness in a previous life

Blocksum is a puzzle game that I remember fondly. Get rid of numbers by matching them as blocks keep increasing from the bottom. Pair two 2s, or three 3s, and they'll disappear....but why stop there? Pair fifteen 2s together if you want! The initial number is just the "minimum" amount of matches required to pair. Makes for some fun CLEAR SCREEN IN ONE GO situations. I always die when the 9s and 11s start appearing.

Gameplay description might be off, going by memory whee.

A Yahtzee classic is Trilby - The Art of Theft. Basically a 2D sidescrolling Thief game. I think it's the same character from the point and click series? Not too sure, I tend to avoid horror.

rRootage is a boss-based SHMUP, with four different modes that crib from various other SHMUPs. I can't remember the exact details here too, but one of the versions is "Ikaruga". All the stages are boss only.

In practical terms this means things like support widescreen resolutions natively, and working on modern operating systems without faffing around.

ET Legacy cannot/does not distribute the copyright assets from the official ET installer. When you run the installer it will offer to download them but that can be pretty slow. It may be quicker to download and install the old version from Splash Damage, then when you run the Legacy installer it will detect that and copy the .pk3 files across. You can uninstall the old version after that if you wish.

Speaking of, all of Yahtzee's games are here. The Chzo Mythos, 1213, everything else. I highly recommend the Chzo Mythos (5 Days A Stranger to start) as a fun horror point n' click adventure with some actually good writing. For an indie effort, it's really compelling.

Absolutely, if you download ET Legacy when you run the installer there is an option to also download and configure omnibot. Then you can start a local game and add bots to fill the teams.
The bots obviously do not play like real players but they will do objectives and you can change the firefight skill to make them pretty hard.

How's the player base for this? The original Enemy Territory is still one of my favorite multiplayer FPS games of all time - I wish someone would do a proper reboot but I'd try the port if there are enough people around.

Dirty Bomb was pretty great spiritual sequel until Splash Damage shut it down last year. Servers are apparently still running, but it's a little late to be jumping in. I'd be game to get an ET group going for some matches if anyone else is. I have a number of friends and old FPS organizing groups to pull from so it shouldn't be too difficult to get something happening for a little bit.

I'll bring up Spirit Engine 2. A sidescrolling, technically turn based but basically real time RPG. You are restored to full health at the end of every fight, so the developer can balance almost every fight as if it matters. Each character class has their own way of mitigating damage, from straightforward/dodge tanking to blowing all their actions on shield abilities. Heck your characters even get up during the course of long enough battles, though this also applies to the enemy. An important part of combat is balancing between charging abilities for stronger effects/damage and reacting to what the enemy is doing right now.

Probably the most famous feature is that your party has three slots, which can each be filled by one of three unique characters. Each of those 9 characters even have their own journals, though the journals rarely talk about other party members for obvious reasons. The personal plot beats happen at roughly the same time every game, but they are radically different between characters.

The sprites look pretty and the main plot isn't bad, even if every shopkeeper feels the need to justify their existence.

I will warn that there is only x amount of money in the game, and only y amount of places to sell items. So when offered 2 paths to an objective take both, and don't hold on to too much equipment "just in case". There are 2 sequences with timed battles that will be very annoying to defensively oriented parties. Finally a non-zero number of boss fights and just plain tough fights take place indoors, plan your characters accordingly.

1213 is a really interesting idea, but I think trying to make a platform stealth/shooter thing in AGS was a little too innovative. :v:

Yahtzee also did playthroughs of all the games he made, right back from the ones when he was like 15, with commentary with one of his friends who'd never seen them before, which was interesting.

There are forks of this that are of some interest. I'm not very familiar with them, though! Be warned if you start them today, you'll have bad luck ingame.

Angband forks are somewhat interesting, but I'm very behind on those too. Ones of note are Zangband at http://www.zangband.org/, which is based on Zelazny's books, Steamband at http://angband.oook.cz/steamband/steamband.html which is based on steampunk, and ToME 2 which is somewhat in an odd place of being supported but not officially maintained. ToME is back when it was Tales of Middle Earth, and is a drastically different game.

I'd recommend Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup more than any other roguelike.

https://www.falcom.co.jp/vantage/download.html Vantage Master Online is a hex-based strategy RPG by Falcom that's free to play.

Zandronum is the current Doom engine of choice. If you don't have commercial IWADs, you can use Freedoom and Blasphemer (FreeHeretic, basically)

Legend of Princess (link goes directly to download) is a Zelda fangame that Konjak of Iconoclasts/Noitu Love 2 fame made. It is cute and fun and fast.

zeta86 is a program to run ZZT on modern Windows. ZZT is one of the best examples of a commercial game working entirely as freeware. If you got the game from a BBS or floppy, you were only able to play one episode, but could still play user maps. If you paid, you got three more campaigns they made, but no change in user map functionality. This led to people scripting JRPGs, platformers, multi-part adventures, and demoscene-styled music tracks in it for free, and the success of it led to Tim Sweeney renaming Potomac Computer Systems to Epic MegaGames. DigitalMZX has a ton of information on Megazeux, the successor to ZZT.

If you want to play a Windows 3.11 game like Jezzball or Castle of the Winds, there's a (somewhat) new method using WineVDM. I've had luck getting Spiderweb Software games and After Dark working on it. It mentions a DOS mode, but it doesn't work afaict. Jezzball works great, but other things run too fast and there's no clock cycle settings that I know of.

Based on the original Train Tycoon Deluxe by Microprose, Open TTD is an engrossing game about building a massive transportation empire.
