did you know that the south americans farmed guinea pigs and that was apparently one of the reasons they had such a low tolerance to infectious diseases

mean while the europeans basically lived with their animals in cities and so they got a lot more exposure to diseases and stuff. most of the diseases that have had the huge death tolls were originally in animals and passed over to humans.

so what im saying is guinea pigs are better and probably healthier to have around than normal pigs, cows, goats, and other such farm life. :3:

Haven't thought about Chobits in a while. Funny story:

IIRC, "Chobits" is a manga/anime about a world where computers- like, ALL computers- are anime girl sex-bots and people use them in really gross ways. I remember a high school friend showing me an episode and me telling him it was kind of an uncomfortable premise, and his response was "but it's written by a woman!!!!", and that gave me a lot to think about for a while.

I think I get his point now, that it was a feminist satire and the discomfort is purposeful. I can respect that, but it took a while for me to get, and I still wonder if that guy really "got" it or was just hand-waving with tokenism. The best comparison I can make is, Chobits is kind of like a Judy Chicago installation. Nobody would actually decorate their real house like Womanhouse, it's specifically made to make the viewer uncomfortable, to highlight how many obstacles society heaps on to women just passively, how many places wherein they are specifically made to feel bad. It tears down male comfort to let some icky emotional truth about how women are treated through, and that's probably really good and overdue. So in that respect, mission accomplished, I definitely felt weird and bad after watching Chobits, and it has stuck with me these nigh-on 20 years.

I stopped going over to that friend's house for a bunch of reasons but the giant collection of Chobits merch was definitely one of them. Like, it's still a feminist parody, your bedroom shelf of PVC dolls in skimpy outfits? Hmm. Still don't quite know what to make of that one. That's my Chobits story thanks for listening.

eva rebuilds

okay so i have seen end of evangelion, and the rebuilds, and i like them, but also, didn't need em, if that makes sense? the finale made sense to me. i do like to see high quality animation, but i wish more dollars went into robot fights instead of boob jiggles, but such is life.

i also totally get the need to put icing on the cake, where the cake is the story and ideas, and the icing is anime tiddies, but i could and would not endure darling in the franxxx.

my brother and his wife are very anime, but sometimes they recommend things to me that would be like me rec'ing godflesh or strapping young lad to someone who thinks that guns and roses is metal, in that i have not the familiarity with the thing to the level where i can brush off utter insanity.

That's an interesting take. But I suspect that you're giving the creators way too much credit.
Edit: Or maybe they (Clamp) just didn't talk in interviews about any meaning the anime/manga might have had.

You are almost definitely right. And that's extremely interesting info, thank you.

Ironically that's a philosophical bent more in line with my usual tastes than the one I was guessing at. Which, typing out like this, I realize shows my personal bias pretty well: I've personally been dehumanized by stupid industrialist computers way more than I've been dehumanized by stupid sexist men. Huh.

Maybe it's finally time for a rewatch? (Nah)

oh good. I love BYOB for the fact that we're all very different people form different walks of life, but we put apart our differences and have a chill time together. Not only is everybody entitled to their opinion about anime, they are encouraged and cherished no matter what they think of it. I am glad that people are getting enjoyment from anime, it's just his humble man's opinion that anime is indefensibly bad and deeply and fundamentally flawed to its very core.

thank you

While Anime does seem at first, second, and possibly third glance to be full of perplexing quirks such as but not limited to - Panty shots, fetishising high-school and hs students, bewildering bouncing mammaries, and of course; incest - I assure you that it is a medium like any other and has some good stuff in there.

I think.

when anime is bad, it is bad beyond belief. anime has a capacity for vileness that is perhaps unmatched in any other medium, because even tho western animation could do gore porn etc, there isn't a market for it comparatively.

agreed. i wanted some noise so i put on netflix and played "is it okay to pick up girls in the dungeon" and the main girl wears a ribbon around her torso explicitly so it makes her boobs move when she raises her arms.

and she's a goddess(??) nah. hard pass.

i diiiiiid try watching Urusei Yatsura, ended up starting on Urusei Yatsura the Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, which I loved even if I had no background for any of the characters. Rumiko Takahashi's work is, ehhhh, easy to assume the details of. has anyone tried using the streaming app Midnight Pulp?
