It's not very obvious, but those dragon tree fruit are also extra lives, if you die with one on you, it will bring you back to the fountain.

In this game there are prerequisites for sword magic, you need to have the title of sword master, that is have 60+ magic and physical stats and you may need to "remember it" as well on top of the awkward execution of pressing the magic button mid swing. spoilers just in case you wanted to figure it out yourself.

Sorry, I checked and it turns out you need 80 magic and phys. for the moonlight sword and triple fang, 60 only lets you use the colichemarde and flame sword magic.
Glad you still got past that though.

There are no random stat ups, every enemy you kill gives you some of the various stats, you can check that in the bestiary.
The number is supposed to be the sum of all the points of the demons in-game, but it's off by some amount (can't remember the precise number).

Some helpful tips, if you press the triangle (or whatever you have set as triangle) in the menu, it brings up a game stats page, and then if you press r1 on that page it will give you a chart of all the worlds with percentages for the enemies in each area.
In the equip info menu holding triangle gives the current durability for each item and if you use the x key on each item it will give a more detailed explanation, if you press the r1 button here it allows you to compare the stat changes between each piece of equipment.
The five slots at the bottom are quick items slots, you can put keys and potions here to speed things up.
To use the quick items you press the circle button to open the interface, the triangle button moves you and the square moves left, you press x to use it.
In the creature book, when you are reading an entry, if you press r1 it will show you the stats the monster gives when you kill it.
If you put weapons or shields in the reserve slots you can swap them with a quick button press of x then square for shields, or x then triangle for weapons.
Sorry if this is a bit much, just trying to make things easier.

As far as I know it doesn't go below 50%, but it is directly correlated with the effectiveness of the equipment, if its at 50 it has half the stats.
Also a funny easter egg of sorts, every weapon in this game can level up 3 times, this includes your fists.

If you can stand the tedium of grinding it out (it takes like 480ish hits to level up to 3), fists are actually an okay weapon for a while.
It kinda feeds into a problem I have with the game, you get weapons at a decently rapid clip, so you'll probably swap most of them out before getting to level 3.
Some weapons really only shine at higher levels, but you wouldn't know that unless you grind them all or look it up.
