without others first inventing the concept of interactive use of a computer, Engelbart couldn’t have come up with the stuff shown in the mother of all demos

interactivity was a huge deal, computers were batch only at first, and even the first minicomputers were designed initially for batch work

it was hardware hacks at universities to hook up telegraph equipment for direct I/O that led to the sea change that was quickly followed by the invention of time-sharing
