(MOSTLY TRUE) HISTORY
October 9, 1905: President Theodore Roosevelt finds himself in a crisis. He has summoned the coaches of the three most prominent football programs (Yale, Princeton, and Harvard) to the White House to hold a summit. The simple task is this: How to fix football?

Over the previous 5 years, 45 players have died on the field from injuries sustained from the game. News stories from around the country decry the excessive violence of the game. The Chicago Tribune called it “A Death Harvest”. The Beaumont Express described football as: “A contest that, for brutality, is little better than the gladiatorial combats in the arena of ancient Rome”. Even Charles Eliot, the President of Harvard and one of the men present at the Football Summit, talks about the game as: “Football is to academics as bullfighting is to agriculture”, and “more brutalizing that prizefighting, cockfighting, or bullfighting”.

The Football Summit showed some promise. President Roosevelt advanced an agenda to “set an example of fair play” for football teams across the country. The men parted ways with a burgeoning intent to change the rules and the face of football.

Intentions that were not followed.

A few weeks after the meeting, Roosevelt’s own son was brutalized playing for Harvard. In a game against Yale, his nose was broken and required surgery to repair. After the game, Charles Eliot remarked that he would not field his team against Yale again. Incidents continued to mount.

Then November 25th happened.
On November 25th, 1905, 3 different football players, playing in 3 different places, and 3 separate matches, were killed.
1.) Union college halfback Harold Moore attempts to “buck the line”. He was kicked in the head by a New York University player. He was knocked unconscious. Moore died 6 hours later from a cerebral hemorrhage
2.) Robert Brown was running the football when he was “thrown heavily upon the ground, alighting on his neck and shoulders”. He was immediately paralyzed, and died without regaining consciousness.
3.) Carl Osborne of Marshall High School was involved in a defensive play. During the play, his ribs were broken—one of the broken fragments pierced his heart. He died instantly.

Pressure was mounting to abolish football. By the end of the season, Duke, Northwestern and Columbia had dissolved their football programs. Stanford and California decided to play rugby instead. Charles Eliot was leading the push to abandon the game. Even internal forces were at play here—Roosevelt’s vice president, William Howard Taft, threaten to personally dismiss any military personnel involved in football.

By December, after 3 more deaths, one of which was a 13-year-old, Roosevelt has seen enough. On December 11, 1905, Roosevelt issued Executive Order 326, bringing an immediate stop to any and all football programs across the country. Any schools keeping a football team would immediately forfeit any federal funds. Faced with significant budget shortfalls and community pressure, the response was swift—football was no more in the United States. Even the organization of what would eventually become the NCAA in 1906 couldn’t sway Roosevelt to reconsider.

…but football finds a way…

April 4, 2013. The NCAA has spent the last 5 years examining the problem of football. A plethora of rules, protective equipment, and scientific study have created a game almost completely divorced from what came before it. All of these efforts were brought forward to the United States Congress, with the hope that they will pass a resolution to overturn Roosevelt’s now 108-year old de facto ban on football.
After days of testimony from scientists, athletes, and historians, a bill was drafted that would revoke the executive order. In a rare show of bipartisanship, the bill easily passes both houses, and is signed into law days later. Football was officially back.

THE PREMISE
Welcome! This is going to be a different kind of Dynasty Mode for NCAA Football 14. Most people that I’ve seen on Youtube have been using TeamBuilder teams, or doing team rebuilds, but this particular run is going to be different that the others.
This series will be a rebuild for EVERY TEAM. Well, not really a REbuild, per say, but just a build. This is year 1 for football!
While keeping things brief here (I’ll be creating a “behind the scenes” video that outlines all of what I’ve done), this is the setup:
-ALL players on ALL teams are now 40 OVR
-ALL recruits will have their ratings seriously curtailed
-ALL records are reset
-ALL coaches start from level 1with 5-year contracts
Unfortunately, I do not have a way of editing with TeamBuilder teams included. I’ve experimented with that, and it routinely leads to some rather significant issues. Maybe with some help, I could try a “restart” with those teams included, but we’ll be running with the default schools in their default conferences.
I’ve done as much as possible to create an environment where football is a “new” sport (hence the name of this LP, and the based-on-actual-events-but-with-a-different-conclusion narrative above). Obviously, there are going to be little things that are out of my control, but I’ve done what I can, and it will be...well, interesting, to say the least. If you enjoy watching bad football, this is the perfect place for you!

YOUR ROLE
All of you are going to have a hand in how things play out in this alternate history world. I’ll be coming to you for all kinds of decisions (playbook decisions, recruiting focus, team selection, etc.) when we get to some decision spots. Most of these will come at the end of seasons, but there will be times where decisions need to be made during the season (or I’ll just decide to do something like change playbooks or what-not). I’ll be sure to make those prominent in posts so y’all can see them easily.
Before we get into the first recorded episode, I do need some input from you! Since we’re starting from scratch, I’ll need to know WHAT TEAM TO PICK (see the full list here, and don’t worry about their overalls—it won’t matter :v:).

Also, this is your chance to get in the game! Give me a player to put into whatever team we’re playing as! You can be as generic or as detailed as you want to be. For example:
1.) You can just give me a name (first and last, no racist/offensive garbage) and a position
2.) You can give me the above plus a number (I’ll do my best with this!) and height & weight
3.) The above plus specific cosmetic choices
This video shows off ALL of the options available, if you’re not certain, look here

Choices are done until next season. Watch this space if you didn't get in this year!

Low scoring affairs will be somewhat commonplace (with one exception which you'll probably see in week 2). What happens when this entire team ends up injured a third of the way through the season? Do you end up in a situation where the absolute bottom of the depth chart has to start even though they collectively fractured their spine during pre-game prayers, or do you automatically forfeit?

The short answer is that the game seems to mitigate injury numbers. I've only ever seen 3 players at a time that have an injury that lasts more than 1 game. Most of the time when teams are getting pounded like this, any injuries just become "will return soon", which is usually something like 2-3 plays. Also, for any injury that would sideline a player for a quarter or less, you have the option of putting them back in or subbing out the next guy on the chart.

So, no--this isn't going to be like Mutant League Football with Death Index on 5, where you can force your opponent to forfeit due to to few players.

Also, I didn't redshirt anyone, so we have PLENTY of bodies to send through the grinder. :honked:

Maybe around halfway through the season settle on a playbook? Could use the excuse that the mormons have tried a few and decided which one is the holy one that will bring them a title? It would give more consistency and could play to the team's pitifully few strengths.

I could do that. I thought the random playbook would be a nice touch to avoid what I see with other people that LP this game and that's just rely on money plays. Of course, me trying to run those plays (like 4 verts, for ex) doesn't work too well when you can never tell if your QB is going to put the ball on the receiver, or in the next county!

Maybe you guys can help me put together a playbook? That might be a bit labor-intensive to try and convey in a thread. I'll do some poking around.

Really, anyone is going to be better than we have right now. Their overalls won't necessarily reflect it, but a RB with 50 SPD at this point would be very hard to catch if he has room. I'd love it I can get all 25 spots filled up and have a competitive team for next year. I'll have to do some digging around for recruits, as we're not going to get some of those top guys I had targeted earlier.

I've always wanted to use that since it's only used in the skills trainer mode. It seems like a waste, because the stadium itself is really awesome-looking. Hell, we'll just make all of Idaho our rivals since I stole Boise State's field for week 1 :v:

The acoustics thing was probably because I turned off the crowd noise, so all you could hear was the on-field audio. Interestingly enough, you still got crowd sound through that, so some events are tied to on-field volume and some are not. It's strange.

Additionally (and I didn't do this on purpose), almost everyone that I named is a senior, so they'll be graduating and not languishing on the depth charts. They'd probably still see playing time since I dropped all the new people's injury ratings quite a bit.

I haven't watched week 4 yet, but if we could get a shot of who the top 25 is week to week. I'm curious if real world smaller conferences like #MACtion or the Fun Belt will wind up more prominent in this hosed up timeline, since every game is essentially a coin flip right now. Do recruits come loaded with power conference bias, or is that somewhat reset as well?

I can show off the polls next week. It's not nearly as bizarre as I was hoping--seems there is still some SEC bias lingering around.

As far as the the recruiting goes, there's only so much I can do to change that, since all of the bonus points for the things that the recruits are interested in are calculated rather than just static fields. Let me go a little in-depth here.

There are 14 things a recruit could possibly look for in a school:
  • Proximity to Home
  • Championship Contender
  • Pro Potential
  • Coach Stability
  • Playing Time
  • Playing Style
  • Conference Prestige
  • Program Tradition
  • Academic Prestige
  • Campus Lifestyle
  • Athletic Facilities
  • TV Exposure
  • Coach Prestige
  • Stadium Atmosphere

The problem is that some of the rely on calculations of factors that I can't really control because if I were to bork them too badly, I would corrupt the game data. Here's what each pitch relies on:

Playing Style = Targeted specifically towards playing style. All of these are tied to some specific stat line. For example, OLBs are affected by either tackles for loss from that position, or OLB interceptions. ALL of the defensive positions work on those conditions. Offensive positions are slightly more diverse, but know that there's a specific thing for each style.
Playing Time = Target prospects who will be starters quickly
Proximity to Home = Self-explanatory
Stadium Atmosphere = More home wins, longer winning streaks, larger attendance, higher Toughest Places to Play rating
TV Exposure = Win televised games
Coach Prestige = meet/exceed contract win expectations
Conference Prestige = Avg. rank of conferences
Championship Contender = Better recruiting classes (more high-ranked recruits signed)
Pro Potential = # of drafted players (seems I could alter that metric through some manipulation in the data tables)
Coach Stability= Stay in one place, complete contracts
Program Tradition = Win games
Academic Prestige = Target prospects who will be starters quickly (I have no loving idea how this correlates, but whatever)
Campus Lifestyle = Perform well in all areas
Athletic Facilities = "Have more success on the field" (No idea what the metric is here--I guess just win?)

I did manage to even out from Pro Potential to Athletic Facilities (in the list above) and make it so everyone is a D overall in those areas. The rest fluctuate as the season goes on. I could've probably done more to eliminate any of the game's biases that I've experimented with before (make everyone currently on a roster from Alaska to eliminate pipeline bonuses, even out where recruits were from, etc.),but I figured wouldn't screw with it too hard.

Hope that's a detailed-enough explanation :v:

I'm don't know if I'm totally sold on GT's book. I know our passing game is abysmal, but it doesn't give us a lot of room to expand that, and you can see my later game running starting to get dragged down by the CPU being the CPU and also terrible run blocking. So, I'm gonna ask to pick another playbook, or at least a style of playbook (option run, spread, etc.)

So, over the last 3 games, special teams has done their share with an onside kick recovery {which is something I've never pulled off}, what should've been a kick return for a touchdown, and now a recovered muffed punt. Sadly, NOTHING came from those plays, because of course!

That's actually our opponent next week. We could play a mirror game, perhaps?

I'm now down a rabbit hole. New Mexico evidently ran a lot of triple option out of the shotgun and pistol.

That might be interesting. If I have time to practice a bit, I might take a look at their book.

Otherwise, I think I might run the mirror match here. I'll look at other books, since it seems you guys want option run. I think I might want a touch more versatility.....maybe even Air Force's book, since they had some option plays in there. I'll figure something out.

So I ran with Mississippi State's playbook, and it wasn't bad! I liked some of what was there, but our passing game is...well, lackluster. I might need to experiment with how to make that more successful.

In the meantime, enjoy the game! It's another close one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5M8hhMwCAk

Hell yeah! My first touchdown!

It was on quite a nice throw, too! Hopefully I can get more like that

So for the "long" field goals, I assumed the game sees "20 yard line? Yeah, kickers can hit from there," COMPLETELY ignoring the laughable kicking skills they have at their disposal. Is it possible to set up for a kick-six type scenario on those and take advantage of their lovely FG abilities?

There is a FG return play in the playbook. I could try running that next time--who knows what might happen?

Hope everyone out there might have their day brightened by a little bad sportsball--lord knows my day went downhill real fast not long after recording this. I checked for errors in editing, so there shouldn't be any, but if there are, I wasn't 100% focused while editing.

We, at least, figured out how to throw a ball forward. 200+ passing yards for the first time!

What are you trying to do with all those leaps mid field at the end of a run? Does this make the player move faster?

I've noticed that some of the animations, like the hurdle and juke (to some extent) seem to accelerate the player once the movement has concluded, so if I can get in a situation where a player has some stamina left and can hurdle a few times, he could possibly pull away from the defenders in a kinda-cheesy way. I don't think the programmers were prepared for players being this slow, as even the slowest players in a "normal" game have something like 55-60 speed (with some rare exceptions).

Some of the players seem to hop along faster than they run (probably "hopping" just goes by animation speed not by player speed, but our players are slow enough that it's unintentionally faster).

Unrelatedly, man, my player had a great game. Nice to see.

Hopefully you saw the play from where I got the preview image!

I hope you're doing better, Professor Duck.

You've got the outside runs down, but I think you'll have more success than you expect trying to break those 1v1 tackles rather than outrunning/juking away from them.

Thank you--I'm doing a little better...not great still, but not nearly as bad as yesterday.

I haven't had too much success breaking tackles, especially on the outside, so I might have to play around with some play options and see if there's a way I can find more success in that.
