The pastor of Life Tabernacle Church in Central went ahead with an evening religious service Tuesday night just hours after city police cited him over allegations he violated a state order to limit crowd sizes during an outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Pastor Tony Spell is accused of violating provisions of Gov. John Bel Edwards’ emergency declaration six times over the past two weeks. Spell has ignored requests from city, parish and state leaders to suspend services.

Spell added that government authorities were throwing away the nation’s Constitution under a “COVID hoax.” He called the fears about the virus a “politically motivated scheme to shut the doors on America’s churches and we refuse to shut our doors.” “Yes, we’re gonna have service,” he added, “and if I am arrested, the second man in charge will step in. If he is arrested, the third man in charge will step in. If he is arrested, the thousands of people who are members of this congregation are gonna step in, but you can’t take us all.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shared with his cabinet a video he claimed was evidence of Iran concealing coronavirus deaths by dropping bodies in garbage dumps, two cabinet ministers tell me.

Several hours later, Netanyahu’s office realized the video had nothing to do with Iran, or with the coronavirus crisis. It was a clip from “Pandemic,” a 2007 Hallmark Channel mini-series.

The backdrop: Iran has been Netanyahu’s top foreign policy focus for 25 years. Israeli intelligence believes there have been up to five times more coronavirus deaths there than the 3,036 that have been officially acknowledged, an Israeli official tells me. Netanyahu thought he’d seen evidence of a cover-up.

Officers arrived to a local business for a report of a man causing a disturbance inside. An employee told police the man, later identified as 33-year-old John Swaller of Cuba, Mo., was coughing towards shoppers on purpose. Swaller then breathed on the inside of a cooler door and wrote “COVID” on the inside.
Police said the 33-year-old also placed his hands down his pants and rubbed on the cooler door handle. The store was forced to shut down and sanitized. Swaller is being held on a $25,000 bond for charges of making a terroristic threat.

When Congress passed the massive $2 trillion bailout bill last week, it made sure that self-employed people or other independent workers could apply for loans or grants from the Small Business Administration. But there was one very specific ― and puritanical ― exception: legal sex workers and others in the adult entertainment industry.

The very first page of the online application says that in order to be an “eligible entity” that can receive monetary relief from the bill, an applicant cannot “present live performances of a prurient sexual nature or derive directly or indirectly more than de minimis gross revenue through the sale of products or services, or the presentation of any depictions or displays, of a prurient sexual nature.”

Prurient, which is defined by Oxford as “having or encouraging an excessive interest in sexual matters,” is a vague categorization that broadly includes thousands of workers in the U.S. As stated, the clause excludes everyone who works in the legal (and, worth noting, booming) sex industry including strippers, porn performers, producers, directors, sex toy manufactures and many others. It’s unclear whether this clause includes other professions that don’t explicitly deal in the sex industry, but do cover subjects that are of a “prurient sexual nature” such as sex therapists and authors of erotica novels

The restriction against prurient businesses receiving federal disaster funds dates back to 1995 when the Clinton administration helped define the SBA’s eligibility rules and regulations. The SBA determined that it would exclude small businesses that engage in “lawful activities of an obscene, pornographic or prurient sexual nature,” according to the initial proposal.

BNEI BRAK, Israel (AP) — Early this week, the streets of the central Israeli city of Bnei Brak were bustling with shoppers as ultra-Orthodox residents, obeying their religious leaders, ignored pleas to stay home in the face of the coronavirus threat.

By Friday, Bnei Brak had become the country’s worst hot spot and now resembles a ghost town. One expert estimated that nearly 40% of the city’s population might already have been infected.

The city has become a lightning rod for anger and frustration by some secular Israelis who allege insular Haredi communities — with disproportionately high numbers of confirmed cases — are undermining national efforts to contain the virus.

The pandemic also has threatened to upend deep-seated customs in the religious world, including blind obedience to religious leaders and the belief that religious studies and traditions take precedence over the rules of a modern state.

Influential Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky of Bnei Brak said closing religious seminaries is more harmful than the virus. “The Torah protects and saves,” he said.

In recent weeks, attempts by police to enforce quarantine orders in Bnei Brak and religious neighborhoods of Jerusalem resulted in standoffs with angry crowds. Some shouted “Nazis” as police arrested or fined violators.

Police say officers have been assaulted multiple times and several paramedics have been injured by ultra-Orthodox crowds.

In recent days, defiance has subsided as the scale of the outbreak became clear. Kanievsky, 92, now urges followers to stay at home.

“The Dept of Health has stated that all gatherings of ten or more do not apply to houses of worship and yet suggest to follow CDC safe practices, of which we are doing,” the church wrote in a Facebook post.

So there is a trend happening during this pandemic of christians breaking stay at home orders and harrasing women going to clinics where abortion services are provided.

Remember when HGTV was going to have a show with the Benham brothers but people uncovered that their comments on LGBT and abortion.

Well one of the brothers got arrested for being outside sidewalk "counseling" outside of a clinic that provides abortion and told the arresting officer to go arrest everyone in that clinic

On Saturday, March 28, four of Love Life’s activists were arrested by police for allegedly violating a local “stay at home” order in place during the COVID-19 pandemic by praying at abortion center A Woman’s Choice.

On Monday, March 30, another seven members of the pro-life group were arrested in the same location.

“Jesus Christ came to save sinners. He didn’t come to condemn the world, but to save the world. And if we’ll put our faith and trust in Him, He’ll forgive our sins, and He’ll heal our hearts, and He’ll change the course of our lives. Members of a central California church found themselves locked out of the bulding after the pastor originally kept his doors open, saying the shelter-in-place orders violated his freedom to assemble. But within the past week, the landlord of the Cross Culture Christian Center in Lodi, Calif. changed the locks, so congregants couldn’t enter the building for Palm Sunday services. The landlord is Bethel Open Bible Church.

Pastor Jon Duncan had continued to hold in-person services despite the coronavirus outbreak. “We’re going to meet as often as we can meet, and we do believe that this right is protected by the 1st Amendment and should be considered essential,” Duncan said in an interview with Fox 40 last week. The San Joaquin County Health Department had ordered the church to shut down last week.

On March 25, Lodi police officers came to one of Duncan’s Wednesday services and told the pastor about county and state orders against public meetings, the LA Times reported
The church retained a lawyer from the Escondido-based National Center for Law & Policy, a conservative Christian nonprofit law center.

An attorney there told the Times he plans to send a letter Monday to Gov. Gavin Newsom and San Joaquin County officials asking that they follow the lead of other states and declare houses of worship as essential services that are exempted from stay-at-home orders.

He said he is also planning a federal civil rights lawsuit “based on the fact that the governor and the county are violating my client’s 1st Amendment rights.”
While most houses of worship are helping their congregants online or offering drive-thru confessions, there have been some churches who have been holding in-person services nationwide. Some of those pastors in Florida and Louisiana have even been arrested.

Roseville police have blocked off a downtown street Tuesday because of fears that a bomb was mailed to the Abundant Life Fellowship Church, which had rejected orders last week to close over coronavirus until county health officials intervened.

On Tuesday morning, Pastor Doug Bird [photo] said he came to the church, which has been closed since his last service on Sunday, and looked at the package and decided to take it outside to the parking lot. Once there, he slit open the parcel slightly and saw what appeared to be a stick of dynamite and wires.

Bird told The Sacramento Bee that he recognized the return address and name on the box as having a name similar to a person that had posted critical comments about the church on Facebook. “I can’t tell you, but it was like the spirit of God, I knew immediately this name was one of the guys on Facebook,” he said, declining to name the person.

Roseville police and the FBI are investigating a suspicious package that was sent to a megachurch that has continued in person services despite the statewide stay at home orders. The package, which police later determined was not an “explosive threat,” was found inside the to the Abundant Life Church on 700 block of Atlantic Street in Roseville on Tuesday, just days after the church’s most recent service.

Roseville police spokesperson Rob Baquera described the item in the box as a “whip with spikes on it, likely with a religious connotation of Easter.” According to scripture, during the Flagellation of Christ, Jesus Christ was flogged with a leather whip with nails, glass and bone embedded in the tips. When Pastor Doug Bird arrived to the church, he said he recognized the name on the package as someone he’d received threats from online.

Easter looming, Kansas Republican leaders on Wednesday revoked Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s order limiting religious gatherings to 10 people as the state’s coronavirus death toll jumped 40 percent. House and Senate leaders — meeting as a body called the Legislative Coordinating Council — voted along party lines to throw out the directive. Their decision came as the number of reported COVID-19 cases in the state climbed to more than 1,000 and the death count ticked up to 38.

Church gatherings have produced three case clusters across the state and health officials fear Easter gatherings could further spread the deadly coronavirus. Pastors and priests now confront a stark choice: forgo in-person services on Christianity’s holiest day or open church buildings and potentially risk exposing parishioners. Opponents were aided by Attorney General Derek Schmidt [photo], who issued a memo calling the order likely unconstitutional and urging police not to enforce it.
