In my mind a public assassination attempt is like what happened to Reagan and Ford, where someone walks up to the rope line with a gun.

Or Clinton, where someone crashed a plane into the White House.

Milo and POTUS posted:

What recent events on the forums?

Did you see the "Return to Earth" thread?

That poster made similar posts (apparently copy/pasted fart fetish porn stories?) in pretty much every single subforum on SA. They then ate multiple bans and probations for their efforts, then returned to the scenes of their crimes using parachute accounts.

In GIP specifically they made a post saying that Trump should be removed from office "by any means necessary," which is extremely problematic. Especially coupled with the fact that in 2017 the same poster was banned for making a variety of posts threatening Trump ranging from the ridiculous ("unbirth him") to the explicit (openly calling for someone to kill him). After my permaban for that was overturned because one admin didn't think it constituted a threat it got called out in QCS since someone who's made explicit threats shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt on iffier ones. Word must have gotten to the taxman because he came in and said "any threat against political figures is a permaban"

But Lowtax gonna Lowtax and that post in QCS is literally all he's said on the subject so now mods and admins gotta walk a fine line because permabanning someone for making an explicit threat against POTUS is one thing, but what do you do if someone says "I hope someone flips Mitch McConnell on his back in the desert and then doesn't help him?"

Absolutely.

My interpretation of the events in QCS were that not only are implicit and explicit threats permabannable, but wishing death upon people was not ok in the forum as well- though not carrying a guaranteed perma.

If McNally thinks it is acceptable to make posts hoping people die, then that's cool. I wouldn't mind some guidelines for what constitutes:

, so that it doesn't result in bullshit probes though.

I'm not particularly of a mind to spell out explicitly what is and is not okay.

I'm going to go forward using my discretion and best judgement, but there's a very wide gulf between "I hope (politician) gets the 'rona" and "I hope these people who are doing everything they can to ensure that the pandemic continues indefinitely get the virus they're exposing themselves to."

If that's a problem for you then I recommend posting elsewhere.

No, it doesn't.

It makes me feel bad that this is what is considered acceptable discourse. Dan Carlin had a pretty good episode of Common Sense about this type of rhetoric a few weeks ago, A Recipe for Caesar. I thought he made a drat good point about what possible resolution we can find to this divide in our country when you have people otherizing their "enemies" to the point of considering them vermin worth destroying.

Obviously the real Nazis are an issue, just like real tankies are an issue. But not everyone who disagrees with you politically falls into those two camps. I'm not eager to raise my daughter in a world where Americans are purging one another over political beliefs, and I think an important step to walking us back from that cliff is stopping that kind of rhetoric when you can.

how the gently caress is "these people wish to indefinitely prolong a pandemic that has, in seven weeks, killed more Americans than the Korean War did in 161 weeks" a political belief

I read a bit about Von Braun about a decade ago, iirc he was a nazi because that was the only way he could get funding. His involvement did get plenty of people killed, but without it, we wouldn't know what we do about space travel and all that jazz. He's not an easily forgivable figure in history, but he was a necessity for the time.

And at least he didn't nuke anyone.
