Dyin' time's here. COVID has now spread from the large cities into the rural areas of the US where there are no hospital beds. That number of deaths is really gonna skyrocket now, as if it isn't already climbing near vertically.

Possibly related:

As was pointed out earlier in the thread, I look forward to Strong Daddy Trump pointing to only 200k deaths as his perfect managing of the crisis, despite that probably being more than the rest of the world combined.

So after months of hearing that masks were ineffective at preventing people from contracting COVID (but could help minimize the spread by containing droplets) now all of the talking heads are starting to say that we need to wear masks at all times. How is anyone supposed to interpret this as anything but desperation and grasping at straws at this point?

This may be, oddly, the science working. It's pretty clear that there's a loving ton that we don't know about COVID-19, primarily because of the asymptomatic carrier issue. We also don't know why some people with COVID-19 feel nothing, others get a cold, others get the fever/shakes/chest stuff, others need hospitalization/oxygen, and others need the full-blown ventilator. I'm only now seeing conjectures as it having to do with the initial viral load in the initial exposure event.

Now that a sizable chunk of research has been done on asymptomatic carriers, and they turn out to be more cases than expected, the guidelines changed. That's good!

But, it's not exactly helpful that drat near everyone in the administration was all "ENJOY YOUR JOBS AND THE GOOD ECONOMY, THIS IS NBD" until it suddenly wasn't. Nor is it helpful that decisions are being made in respect to our culture, instead of just a person, at a podium, saying what the straight science is. The truth might be that nobody has a firm grasp on the straight science yet.

I get what you’re saying, but current WHO guidance still says that a mask is unnecessary unless you’re sick or taking care of someone who is sick. I’m having a hard time reconciling what’s good advice being put out by the US government vs. “WE’RE DOING SOMETHING!” pseudoscience. Given how compromised every other agency is, I have no reason to believe that CDC isn’t just placating Trump because he saw something on Fox News about how more Americans are wearing masks.

This election is going to be about which VP you want to take over for Biden or Trump because there’s no way either of them are going to last through the upcoming term.

It’s a hosed up state of affairs when you’re wondering whether Biden’s really sundowning this hard or GOP operatives are sinking low enough to edit videos to make Biden look like this (and are most definitely doing much worse things in the background.)

Edit: could he be talking about the influenza pandemic of 1918?

So the video came from ABC news and it wasn’t doctored. Relevant clip starts at 7:30 or so. I can only assume that he’s talking about the pandemic of 1918 but he’s inarticulate and imprecise on this.

https://youtu.be/K8UH3Gdmx8I

Admittedly the rest of the video isn’t great. Biden stumbles a bit and keeps repeating “follow the science” as his answer to many questions. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that he was trying to give non-specific answers lest they be picked apart by the Republicans, but it’s still not a great look.

Ninja edit: when I say he’s stumbling, I’m not referring to his stutter. That’d be a mean thing to go after him for.

Actual edit: yeah, even if Bernie is still my guy, I’ll take Biden over Trump without hesitation. I may hate it but it’s still better than a president who’s trying to kill as many people as possible.

Meanwhile, AG Barr went on Fox News to talk about shelter in place and other state governor restrictions, describing some as "draconian" and calling them to be reexamined at the end of the month.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...f094_story.html

quote:

“When this period of time, at the end of April, expires, I think we have to allow people to adapt more than we have, and not just tell people to go home and hide under their bed, but allow them to use other ways — social distancing and other means — to protect themselves,” Barr said.

Check your board to see if you had "religious liberty"

quote:

Barr said that governments had a right to put restrictions on churches, so long as they were treated no differently than other institutions, but added he was “very concerned” about possible encroachments on Americans’ freedom of religion. Barr said he was also concerned about the “tracking of people” that some experts have advised might be necessary to quickly identify and quarantine those infected.

Anyone get a bingo with HCQ?!

quote:

Barr said Trump had been the recipient of “snarky, gotcha questions from the White House media pool” and took particular aim at inquiries about the drug hydroxychloroquine. Trump has touted the drug as a possible treatment for covid-19, although its effectiveness has not been proven.

“As soon as he said something positive about it, the media’s been on a jihad to discredit the drug,” Barr said.

I guaran-loving-tee you the White House will point to a decline in cases as a reason to "reopen" the economy, and the sycophants in Fox News and the GOP will happily line up in fawning agreement. Never mind that such a decline will likely come in conjunction with the federal government's cessation of funding of testing centers as was pointed out earlier, so any actual decline will likely be simply because there are fewer resources to conduct tests.

The Trump administration is going to kill more people than any of the groups or countries we've been dropping bombs on for the past 60 years.

The Canadians are probably following that Imperial College COVID study which basically said the thing. Three months of social distancing to start, a few months' respite, then back into this again for the winter, repeat until we have a vaccine. And frankly, I don't trust the CDC anymore either. DC's city government just adopted a new ordinance that says you have to be wearing a mask of some sort to even enter a grocery store, which suggests that they're not going to relax their posture anytime soon.

If we “reopen the economy” as soon as Trump wants, it’ll probably erase whatever gains we’ve made in fighting the virus while the economy still craters. So we’ll still have a severe recession or depression AND a lot of people dead.

In a kind of similar vein, known dipshit Marc Thiessen, who used to be GWB and Rumsfeld’s speechwriter and never met someone he didn’t approve of torturing, is arguing that China be held responsible for COVID.

quote:

China must be held to account for its lies and obstruction. U.S. health-care workers and business owners recently filed the first lawsuits against the Chinese Communist Party for its complicity in this pandemic. Congress should help them and others by lifting China’s statutorily granted sovereign immunity and allowing the individuals and businesses harmed by China’s actions to sue Beijing for damages.

Creating an international incident sure would be a great way to distract from Trump’s mismanagement of the response and is definitely a serious thing by serious people who understand international law!
