Wanna dip into the occult with me? Cool. Rune Stones ORIGIN: The Norse runes were legendarily first discovered by Odin as he dangled from Yggdrasil. Without food, water, or rest, he hung there as he tried to see what the Norns were carving onto the tree's trunk. Which was especially difficult, since he had plucked out one of his own eyes in another previous attempt to gain wisdom. After nine days he finally understood the strange shapes and realized their power. "Equipped with the knowledge of how to wield the runes, he became one of the mightiest and most accomplished beings in the cosmos. He learned chants that enabled him to heal emotional and bodily wounds, to bind his enemies and render their weapons worthless, to free himself from constraints, to put out fires, to expose and banish practitioners of malevolent magic, to protect his friends in battle, to wake the dead, to win and keep a lover, and to perform many other feats like these." -Hávamál, "The Poetic Edda" stanzas 138-163 THE RUNES: Also known as the futhark, runes are, at their core, letters which can be easily carved into wood, stone, or metal due to their prevalence of straight lines. They are called the futhark for almost the exact same reason the alphabet is called the alphabet, because the first 6 runes are: Fehu (Wealth) Uruz (Strength) Thurisaz (Danger) Ansuz (Prosperity) Raidho (Journey) Kaunan (Mortality) Considering that this style of writing lasted for at least a millennium, over quite a vast distance (including well into Germany, Britain, and even North America), there are many variations of the futhark. For the purpose of using rune stones as a tool of divination, the common futhark is the 24 letter system. DIVINATION: Much like necromancy, alectromancy, and tasseography, runes stones do not necessarily predict the future. They provide clarification. SELECTING RUNE STONES: The futhark is powerful and equally effective scribbled on torn-up pieces of paper as it is carved onto obsidian obelisks. CASTING: There are a bunch of ways to cast rune stones, including in cross patterns and mah-jong-like pyramids. However, the simplest way is to set three of them in a single row. Close your eyes, calm your mind, and: -Give your bag of rune stones a good shake. -Reach in, and search by touch a single one. -Without opening your eyes or exciting your mind, place it in front of you. -Repeat two more times. Once the three rune stones are placed, open your eyes and observe them. Are any of them upside-down, backward, or flipped over? That's okay. Most runes' attributes change depending on how they're facing. INTERPRETATION: Study online or at the library to identify what the runes say. HAVING FUN: Have fun.
