Remastered or Remade?

EA_Jimtern posted:

This is a remaster. Our intention is to keep the story, script, and content as authentic as possible to the original games, while providing much higher fidelity with modern quality of life improvements.

The game has updated HD graphical assets, AI upscaled cutscenes, quality of life improvements such as build queues, new sidebar layout (RA2 style menus) and modern control options, but it will function mostly the same as the games did back in 1995 and 1996. There is even a toggle to play the game in a legacy graphical setting or the new updated assets (campaign and skirmish only)

The remasters have been developed by Petroglyph Games (Star Wars: Empire at War, Grey Goo) with Lemon Sky Studios providing many of the graphical assets. Petroglyph was created by a number of former Westwood staff after EA closed the studio down, so a number of original C&C creators are working on this project.

What is in the Collection?
The Remastered Collection includes Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn (1995) and expansion pack The Covert Operations (1996) and Command & Conquer: Red Alert (1996) as well as the expansion packs Counterstrike (1997), and The Aftermath (1997).

The remasters will also include the unique missions and cutsenes from the Playstation 1 version of the game, Red Alert: Retaliation (1998)

Other additions include AI skirmish for Tiberian Dawn (not originally included in C&C95), re-recorded EVA by the original voice actress, replay and observer modes for online tournaments/e-sports, a map editor with steam workshop support, online leaderboards, custom game lobbies etc.

  • Over 100 campaign missions (including secret Dinosaur and Ant missions)
  • Over 250 multiplayer maps | 4 player MP (Tib Dawn), 8 player MP (Red Alert)
  • 7 hours of remastered music by Frank Klepacki
  • 20 studio re-recorded songs performed by Frank Klepacki and the Tiberian Sons
  • 4 hours of B-Roll footage, making-of photos and unreleased music tracks.
  • Quicksave and Autosave support
  • Cinematic subtitles for both games
  • Text localization in French, German, Russian, Spanish, Polish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese
  • Voice Over in English, French, and German

Where is Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun?

If this does well enough for EA maybe those will be re-mastered next. But they play a bit better on Windows 10 systems than the original games do, they also use a different engine so who knows if they'll be updated.
Time will tell... sooner or later.

Community Involvement

EA took the idea of remastering the original C&C games to the community, revealing the project in November 2018 with an announcement by Joe Bostic (co-founder of Westwood Studios)

A community council was established to help provide internal feedback during development, while updates have been posted to the C&C reddit every few months for the past year providing feedback on development choices, such as which songs/tracks to remaster.

Even the boxart was a fan design which was then comissioned by EA:

quote:

Now, some of you may recognize the box art adorning these physical versions, and also being used today in many of our storefront and website materials. As some of you know, this design was created following our announcement in 2018 by longtime C&C community member Pierre “Tchutch” Maindron from CnC Saga. When I first saw the design back then, I fell in love, and believed the design represented everything special about the community support for the project. So, a few months ago I reached out to Pierre, who I had known from our Community Summits over ten years ago, and asked if we could commission the design from him to be officially used for the project. Pierre was graciously supportive, and we are so humbled to have a community design be the key art and box cover for the Remastered Collection.

Having never played Tiberian Dawn and only a bit of the Soviet campaign in Red Alert, I'm really looking forward to this! Do the campaigns in Tiberian Dawn have a suggested play order ala Starcraft or can I just go for whichever?

Whichever order, but of course everybody picks the Nod campaigns because of the cooler logo when you're playing the game for the first time aged 7.

The missions will follow on from eachother once a campaign has begun with cutscenes and briefings playing between missions, but the remastered version of the games has a new front-end/mission select menu so you can jump ahead, play the alternate versions of missions (when you have a multiple choice on the map screen) or the missions from expansion packs. You can see some of those images in the second post of the OP.

We can only hope they adapt the original installer into the game somehow, that really set the tone of the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cioyLQ2O6yc

The installer(s) were created from scratch by a fan, CCHyper who has been around the C&C community for yonks.

It is a little disappointing they did a new worldmap for mission selections but didn't re-do the cinematics with maps. Ah well.

Overall, after playing the first 5 GDI missions, this is good.

My "Welcome Back, Commander" moment was mission 7 for the gdi. I think I failed that mission in like 10 seconds.

I just finished the Delphi mission, I forgot how it started since I haven't played it in like 10 years and had to retry a few times to get off the beach on hard difficulty, the light tank kept running all my (ralp)naders over.

Horizon Burning posted:

One thing I've found interesting that went completely over my head as a kid is how apocalyptic the world is. A Nod mission just casually drops how 1/3 people in GDI areas has health issues due to Tiberium and people are worried it might damage DNA. I know TibSun went full apocalypse but I never saw how TibDawn laid the foundations in the way it did.

Carter gets pretty sick over the course of the pre-mission briefings while Shepards is 'away on civvie duty' And then he's just gone, presumably dead after trying to sail down the river far too early for me to be ready and blow up the turrets.

There is the almost throwaway CGI cutscene with the bodybags in the alleyway and a burning building saying that a few million have already died from tiberium poisoning, then later on Mobius is talking about how risky it is, only a few missions hafter spruiking it on the talk show.

Shits bad, then it goes grimdark levels in Tiberian Sun, which had the best atmosphere of any of the C&C games.

So now we get to debate Dr Mobius again, after all these years.

First he extols the virtues of Tiberium "The possibilities are limitless!" then he seems to be exposing townspeople to spores and tiberium infection in GDI mission 8B instead of GDI just evacuating the civilians from the area.

Later in GDI Mission 12A you've got to evacuate Dr. Mobius from an under siege GDI base, he is standing outside a Hospital which is located next to a Prison... has Mobius been conducting human testing on the prison population?

He does change his mind by then saying that Tiberium could be highly dangerous and have serious ramifications for the population of Earth.

Dr. Ignatio Mobius, a madman furthering his own goals? Or just trying to unlock the secret of Tiberium and protect humanity? You decide!

- Is there a hotkey for multiple unit waypoints? Like a way to tell them Move to A, then move to B? Seems like this would be a way to work around ancient pathfinding.

I have not tried it yet but here is a mod for new pathfinding in TibDawn only (at the moment) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2121899275

This mod replaces the "crash and turn" pathfinding in Tiberian Dawn with a simple implementation of A*. Generally this means that your units wont get lost or stick to edges when moving around the map.

An update on the multiplayer and some other things: https://www.reddit.com/r/commandandconquer/comments/gxg5nz/remaster_update_and_game_stuttering_online/

quote:

Fellow Command & Conquer fans,

The game has now been live for several hours, and we’re already getting a ton of feedback from the community across all our channels. We’re actively reviewing this feedback, and just like we did with the Community Council when they started playing the game, will begin prioritizing these items going forward. Our goal is to continue maintaining a transparent dialog with all of you as we make this transition into post-launch support, and we’re not going to hide from issues within the game. With that in mind, we’ve been tracking two primary issues since the launch earlier today.

Online Stability

The first issue is the online stability of the game has been troublesome during the launch today. We’ve seen some games getting disconnected, occasional Quickmatch games failing upon load, and times when the online services are down completely. This is not the experience we wanted you to have with the Remastered Collection upon launch, and for that we sincerely apologize.

The team is working on further optimizations to the online infrastructure, and how to efficiently expand server capacity in this launch window of high demand. While we know many of you are eager to get into multiplayer, we certainly hope you can enjoy the Campaign, Skirmish, or play with a new piece of UGC while we work on these issues.

Game Stuttering

The second issue is that we are seeing reports of players who are experiencing game stuttering while playing in both single player and multiplayer. We had heard isolated incidents of this issue over the past few weeks with pre-launch players, but were unable to gather enough data and diagnose the exact cause in our research prior to launch.

Here’s what we know so far:
  • The stuttering seems to happen most often in the first playthrough of early missions, or when large armies of units are clashing during open battles or base attacks
  • The stuttering seems worst if it’s the first playthrough after restarting your computer
  • The stuttering doesn’t seem to happen as much (or at all) if you’re in the legacy graphics mode
  • Early reports show the issue is much more prevalent if the game is installed on a standard HDD versus a SDD
  • These data points lead us to believe the issue is tied to something like texture loading, as the game attempts to load the remastered textures for the first time during a playthrough

The team is working on gathering more data from players to discover further patterns and hardware configurations. We admit this issue has been a little more difficult to diagnose, as we do not have access to our standard QA PC lab of hardware due to the pandemic. If you are encountering this issue and would like to help us gather more data, please consider posting your experience / hardware configuration here on this Reddit thread or on the EA Technical Support forums at:

https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Info-Request-Game-Stuttering/m-p/9180031#M68

In the meantime, if you are encountering this stuttering issue, we have the following suggestions based on the information we’ve gathered so far:
  • If you have an SSD drive, we recommend installing the game to that drive
  • Try changing the resolution to a lower one, then back to the original resolution
  • Before playing, close all web browsers and other applications which could use Video RAM or actively ping the hard drive
  • While certainly annoying, consider starting a mission and then reloading it after a few seconds to allow the textures to cache first

We greatly appreciate your patience as we look into both these issues, and will keep you updated here on Reddit and other channels with our progress.

Thanks for your continued support and feedback.

Cheers,

Jim Vessella

EdEddnEddy posted:

They must have a possible Red Alert 2 Remaster in the works as a few of the songs are from that game and were never part of the original C&C/RA afaik. Though that game also I believe got a patch to allow widescreen and other options recently I believe so it doesn't really need it as much as the classics did.

EA made a reddit post last year asking the community which songs should be remastered via a poll.

And then you have other cnc music because the Tiberian Sons playlist was franchise wide, the setlist they performed at magfest which EA then got them into a recording studio to put then in the game.

Once the physical copies ship I'm sure the music with correct filenames and song details will be uploaded, the whole soundtrack will be on a tiberium crystal USB stick.

I've seen some behind the scenes stuff for it over the last two years or so, looks neat, very cool unit designs updating the TS units like the Banshee and Wolverine.

Sadly though the gameplay will be Renegade like, not really updated to the modern era, although a little different from the existing RenX gameplay.

The art is fantastic though, so I'll look forward to playing it a bit. A real shame they didn't swap to UE4 though, it is all built on UE3 like RenX so it lacks a lot of graphical fidelity.

Slavik posted:

Excellent. Looking forward to seeing what they produce. Renegade X is quite under-appreciated, including the work that continues to go into it since its first public release several years back.

I still play it from time to time and its biggest problem is the balance of units and how they work in some of the maps. Most of that is not helped because at its core Tiberian Dawn was never exactly balanced and its hard to recreate a faithful TD and Renegade experience with how the units worked in both original games.

Moving more firmly into the Tiberian Sun world will help with that.

Actually, I never played the Tiberian Sun Reborn mod for the original Renegade. Did moving into TS help with Renegade's balance?

Reborn never really came out, there was the initial release which could wipe your hard drive when uninstalling. It was basic, infantry only plus a wolverine and a nod buggy iirc.

RenAlert (later Red Alert: A Path Beyond) was its rival and more successful mod which had multiple releases over the years while reborn struggled for various reasons to put anything out.

Then after internet flamewars, both mods became freidnly and reborn joined the APB forums and there was a push to get a stable build out in 2006. Infact, EA secured a few PCs and demospace at Gamescom to show off reborn and APB. I was involved at that time and helped make some posters and trailers for both projects.

Then once again, forum wars and drama meant reborn just sat around without much development going on while APB churned out content release after content release for a few years and then the projects finished up. A couple of years later APB 'rebooted' with essentially a new devteam and had a few more minor releases over the years, still going today after yet another forumwar where the current devteam stole the forum database overnight while the admin was asleep and split the community up! And only just last month reborn had one of the 'creators' of the project threaten to sue the other people claiming he owned assets involved and wants control of the project again.

Reborn continues to forever just be 6 months away from a release. The balance didn't really change form Renegade too much, mainly map design helped to differentiate it with larger maps and less choke points. APB had much larger maps and new mechanics and aircraft and naval units which really changed gameplay from Renegade.

While Renegade X copied Renegade gameplay by about 90% so while it was cool, got a bit stale playing it 5 years ago with 2003 gameplay. Which is a pity this new release won't change things up again too much, a few of us wanted a TS project with a more battlefield feel of gameplay after working on APB for years and considering it finished, but life got in the way.

Quite a few goons posting in this very thread worked on APB over they years, Chronojam being the leader of the project during its most successful years.

Nichael posted:

This exists.

Poil posted:

I loved that Renegade felt just like running around in first person C&C, too fancy graphics might ruin that feeling for me. But whatever. What I would like is the same but for Red Alert. Imagine shaking soviet bases apart with Tanya. Second game might be cool too. Maybe a serious and sophisticated mission where you ride around on a dolphin fighting a giant squid boss dodging the occasional dreadnought rocket.

Funcom bought the Dune game rights, given the new movie is out all the rights went up for sale again (might higher asking price now) and we're getting Dune boardgames very soon and at least 3 projects from Funcom.

Funnily enough, with the Conan RTS game by Petroglyph last year, there might be another teamup with them for a Dune RTS at some stage... given they have some of the origian Dune II people still working there it would have come full circle. Except two of the games to be mobile/social media type of games though and who knows what the third will be, an RPG/action game possibly.
